(Prudential) to provide a meaningful summer internship opportunity to a highly-motivated first-year law student. Through this partnership, the National LGBT Bar Association will select a student to join the 2012 summer law intern class at Prudential for a 10-week internship at Prudential’s offices with a stipend of approximately $10,000. The Honorable Ralph R. Beistline, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Alaska, will visit the law school on Wednesday, February 8 and will host a Q & A session for students.

The session will be in the courtroom from noon to 1:00 p.m., though Judge Beistline will be available to speak with students until 2:00. Lunch will be provided.

Judge Beistline was born and raised in Alaska and has served as a US District Court Judge since May of 2002. He previously served nine and a half years as a superior court judge in Fairbanks, Alaska, serving as Presiding Judge from 1997 to 2001. Prior to becoming a judge, Judge Beistline practiced law in Fairbanks, engaged primarily in civil litigation. He served on the Board of Governors of the Alaska Bar Association from 1985 to 1988, as President of the Alaska Bar Association from 1986 to 1987, and was Editor of the Alaska Bar Association Newspaper for five years.

And, a fact near and dear to us here at SU, Judge Beistline was the very first graduate of the University of Puget Sound School of Law (now SU), earning his JD in 1974.

Washington First Responder Will Clinic

The next WA First Responder Will Clinic will be held Saturday, February 25th, 2012 at the Shoreline Fire Department Headquarters (17525 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98133).

The WA First Responder Will Clinic is a program where volunteer attorneys who are in estate planning/probate practice prepare estate planning documents at no charge for fire fighters, police officers and first responders.

This clinic will be from 9am to 4pm . Please feel free to volunteer for either a morning shift (8:15am to 12:30pm) or an afternoon shift (12:15pm to 4:30pm) in the capacity of discussion leader, document drafter, intake personnel, witness or notary. Alena Suazo Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a law student committed to social justice work. Please provide a personal statement, no longer than 3 double-spaced pages, describing your reasons for attending law school and experiences working with marginalized communities and/or fighting injustice and oppression.

Scholarship Description:
Alena Suazo fought for the voiceless, the oppressed, and the disenfranchised, and she did it with grace, humor, determination, and an unrelenting spirit. She lived each day to the fullest, and gave her entire self to the causes and people she cared about.

Alena graduated from University of Washington School of Law (UWLS) in June 2010. In addition to the amazing things Alena accomplished at UWLS on a daily basis, while there she was the Co-President of the Latina/o Law Student Association, Vice President of the Minority Law Student Association, and served in the Tribal Defense Clinic for two years. Following graduation, Alena received the Bonderman Fellowship, an award given to graduates of UW to undertake new experiences through travel. Just a few months into her world tour, she passed away in Guatemala. Alena hoped to become a public defender in Southern California and to fight against the racial and economic disparities in the criminal justice system and throughout American society.

The Alena Suazo Memorial Scholarship has been created in her name to go towards the hidden costs of law school. Alena felt that direct and collateral costs associated with attending law school impeded Latinas/os from entering into the legal profession.

Eligibility

The contest is open to all students who are enrolled in the 2011-2012 academic year and in good academic standing at an accredited law school in the United States.
Prizes

There will be one first prize winner, one second prize winner, and one honorable mention.

The first prize winner will have his or her winning essay published in a forthcoming edition of NACDL’s magazine, The Champion; receive a $200 cash prize; receive a free one-year student membership; and receive a certificate of recognition.

Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

The American Bar Association Section of Litigation is now accepting applications from 2Ls for the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP); AND beginning December 1st, 1Ls may apply as well.

The deadline for both 1 and 2Ls is January 6.

JIOP's mission is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who identify as LGBT.

The judicial internships are with state and federal judges throughout Arizona, California, DC, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington State and are full-time (32 hours per week), six week minimum commitments.

JIOP seeks self-starting, critical thinking, success oriented, problem-solving team players with strong oral and written communication skills and great capacity for growth.

2012 Coastal Management Fellowship: This two-year opportunity matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by each state and selected by NOAA’s Coastal Services Center.

2012 Sea Grant/NOAA Fisheries Fellowships in Population Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics: This program offers two- and three-year research opportunities to Ph.D. candidates interested in either population dynamics and stock assessment or in marine resource economics.

2012 WSG Science Writing Fellowship: WSG Science Writing Fellows assist in the development of a variety of communication products about Sea Grant projects and issues in marine-related research, education, and outreach; upper division undergraduates and graduate students are eligible to apply.

2012 Marc Hershman Marine Policy Fellowship: This program places two to four graduate students or recent graduates for one year with state agencies in Olympia or Tacoma, WA, working on ocean and coastal science and management issues.

Janet D. Steiger Fellowship

The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work for the consumer protection and antitrust departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States, as well as the Georgia Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs. The eight-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General (“NAAG”), as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service.

The first and second year law students who have served as Steiger Fellows have characterized their experiences as truly rewarding, often well beyond their expectations. A number of students have said that for the first time they are considering law careers in public service. Each of the highly-motivated Steiger Fellows provides tangible, meaningful assistance to states and territories that are in substantial need of additional resources to fulfill their consumer protection mission. Attorneys General Offices that have hosted Steiger Fellows in the past have characterized the Fellows’ work as exemplary, and have often described the students as some of the most talented interns the offices have ever attracted.

Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition

The GRAMMY Foundation is sponsoring the 14th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition.

The GRAMMY Foundation, in concert with some of the nation’s most prominent entertainment attorneys, established the Entertainment Law Initiative (ELI) in 1998 to promote discussion and debate about the most compelling legal issues facing the music industry today. The initiative also endeavors to promote future careers in entertainment law by seeking out the nation’s top law students and giving them invaluable networking and educational opportunities.

The Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition invites law students to write a 3,000-word paper on a compelling legal topic facing the music industry today. The contest culminates with the winning student authors presenting their essays at the prestigious ELI luncheon.

The Berkeley Law Foundation (BLF) is now soliciting proposals for one-year public interest legal projects to begin in 2012. To be considered, proposals must be received electronically by 11:59
p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012.

BLF traditionally awards one to two grants per year to individuals undertaking public interest law projects that will serve legally disadvantaged or politically under-represented groups and promote systemic change. We view our grants as seed money for innovative projects that will immediately provide sorely needed legal services and will continue providing such services for years to come.

What BLF Will Fund
BLF seeks to fund projects that include the following components: legal advocacy, community education, and/or policy change in areas affecting groups of people who generally lack access to the legal system.

How to Hang a Shingle: A Solo and Low Bono Practice Management Training for Law Students and New Lawyers

Does solo practice appeal to you? Have you thought about serving the growing moderate means income community who can’t afford going legal rates but make too much money to qualify for legal aid? If you’re curious to learn what it takes to launch such a practice, you should join us, October 28, for How to Hang a Shingle, a program developed by the Center for Professional Development and the Access to Justice Institute.

This full day program is designed to provide meaningful, practical advice and information to students and new attorneys about starting a solo practice. It will also provide information for those dedicated to serving the public interest but, due to the difficult economy, have not been able to practice in legal services. “Low bono” is a term used to describe providing discounted rates to under-represented clients. This program will also discuss how a low bono practice can be a viable way to have a solo career.

This year, we are pleased to expand the Diversity Scholars Program from four to six scholarship recipients.

NCPL Fellowship

Applications are being accepted for the National Center on Philanthropy and the Law Fellowship. The NCPL Fellowship permits one Fellow each year to spend one year in residence at the New York University Office of the General Counsel, working with the General Counsel of
NYU and the staff of seventeen attorneys on legal issues facing the University.

The NCPL Fellow will delve into an unusually wide variety of legal and organizational issues
and will participate in the legal work conducted by the Office of the General Counsel, including conducting factual and legal research, drafting litigation papers, transactional and policy documents, and correspondence, and participating in the lawyering enterprises of the University.

Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship

The Fellowship, which is funded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, permits one Fellow each year to spend one year in residence at the Vera Institute of Justice in New York City, working closely with the General Counsel to Vera and her staff on legal issues faced by Vera. ABA John J. Curtin Summer Legal Intern stipend applications available

The Curtin Justice Fund Legal Internship Program is managed jointly by the ABA Commission on Homelessness and Poverty and the Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants. The Program will pay a $2,500 stipend to three law school students who spend the summer months working for a bar association or legal services program designed to prevent homelessness or assist homeless or indigent clients or their advocates. The Legal Internship Program will provide much-needed legal assistance to organizations serving the under-represented and give students direct experience in a public interest forum. Through this, it aims both to help homeless clients and to encourage careers in the law that further the goals of social justice.

Filipino Lawyers of Washington 2011 Pangarap Scholarship

The Filipino Lawyers of Washington (“FLOW”) awards two $500.00 scholarships to law students attending a law school in Washington State. The scholarships are intended to recognize law students who have a demonstrated significant commitment to community service, particularly service to the Filipino/Filipino American community. You need not be of Filipino ethnicity to apply.

JUDGING CRITERIA
All applicants will be judged on the following criteria:

Community service and community involvement, particularly service to the Filipino/Filipino American community;
Academic achievement, work experience, activities, and post-law school goals; and
Essay

There is no minimum G.P.A. requirement

SELECTION & NOTIFICATION
The scholarship recipient will be selected and notified by the FLOW Scholarship Committee.

Public Defender Corps

Across the country, public defender offices are underfunded, understaffed and burdened with insurmountable caseloads. With too few public defenders handling too many cases, those who cannot afford representation are being denied their fundamental right to counsel.

Equal Justice Works and the Southern Public Defender Training Center have launched a new initiative to combat this growing problem. Public Defender Corps will provide intensive training and mentoring to new attorneys with the goal of supporting the public defender community and raising the standard of representation across the country.

The inaugural class of 18 Public Defender Corps members have completed training and joined public defender offices in Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee where they will receive ongoing training and mentoring.

The SU Law Clinic, CPD, and ATJI present this training opportunity for all law students to learn the critically important skills required to adequately represent limited English proficient (LEP) clients. In this training, you will learn about the legal obligations and remedies concerning meaningful access for LEP persons to services and programs. You will also learn critical hands-on skills which will allow you to most effectively work with interpreters in the course of representing LEP clients.

If you are a student in SU's Clinical Program or if you are thinking of taking a Clinic, this training will prove especially useful! The skills and information you will receive are also highly important for your work in externships or any legal employment including pro-bono and low-bono legal work.

Over 150 law students have already received this invaluable training over the past three years!

You will receive a Certificate of Completion for completing the 3-hour training, which will be a useful tool in your career development efforts.

Trainers:

Martha N. Cohen: Martha is a Washington State Court Certified Spanish interpreter and Manager of the Office of Interpreter Services for King County Superior Court in Seattle, a program recognized by the National Center for State Courts. She provides instruction to interpreters and bilingual staff for interpreter training programs at Seattle University Law School, University of Washington Law School, the Translation and Interpretation Institute in Bellevue, Washington, and a number of community-based organizations serving refugees and immigrants. Ms. Cohen is a national consultant on court-based interpreter programs and has presented information on how to work effectively with interpreters at the national, state and local levels for judges, attorneys and court personnel.

Kristi Cruz has been a certified American Sign Language Interpreter since 1996 and is a 2008 graduate of Seattle University School of Law. She was the inaugural Seattle University School of Law Leadership for Justice Fellow (2009), for her work at the Northwest Justice Project on a language access project. Ms. Cruz is currently an attorney at Seattle University School of Law where she is working on a project for the American Bar Association to develop language access standards for state courts. She is actively involved with the Washington State Coalition for Language Access (WASCLA), serving as a co-chair of the Board of Directors and on the Summit Planning Committee.

If you are committed to or exploring the possibility of a career in public interest or with the federal government, consider attending the upcoming Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair the weekend of October 21-22 in Washington, D.C.! More than 130 public interest employers from across the country will be participating. Also, SU Law will be hosting its Third Annual Networking Reception for all D.C.-area Alumni on October 20, and all student Fair participants are invited to attend. This is a great way to get an instant network of contacts in D.C.!

CPD and AtJI will be offering stipends of $150 to support your attendance at the Conference and Career Fair and the SU Student-Alumni networking event.

If you are interested in attending, please make note of the following important information and dates:

EJW Registration is currently open. Students must register to see which employers are participating. Registration closes for students applying for interviews on September 12. If you only want to attend the conference and/or Table Talk, registration reamins open until October 6.

Applications for interviews go live for employers on Wednesday, September 14. Given the competitive nature of this process, we STRONGLY encourage you to work with Stacey Lara on your application materials. This year employers will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis, so it is imperative that you apply by September 14.

Employers notify students by Wednesday, September 28 whether they have been selected for an interview.

Business and Professional People for the Public Interest (BPI), a Chicago-based not-for-profit law and policy center, seeks a recent law or public policy graduate to serve as the Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellow for one year, renewable for a second, beginning in Summer or Fall 2012.

The Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellowship offers the opportunity for recent law school or public policy school graduates to develop the experience, skills and network critical to a rewarding career in public interest advocacy. Fellows have gone on to become the Executive Director of a non-profit
organization that serves youth interests, to practice affordable housing law, to accept a full-time staff position with BPI and more.

Washington First Responder Will Clinic

The Washington Will Clinic is a program where volunteer attorneys prepare estate planning documents at no charge for fire fighters, police officers and other first responders and their spouses/state-registered domestic partners.

The clinic will be from 9am to 4:30 pm on September 10th, 2011. Please feel free to volunteer for either a morning shift (8:15am to 12:30pm) or an afternoon shift (12:15pm to 4:30pm) in the capacity of attorney, document drafter (law clerk or paralegal), intake personnel, witness or notary. Also, there will be a free CLE (1.75 credits) on September 7th from 12 – 2pm at Starbucks Support Center (in SoDo) to review basic estate planning and answer any questions (this is a great opportunity for all attorneys involved, but especially those attorneys who don’t practice estate planning on a daily basis). WSBA Juvenile Law Section offers Youth Law Bar Scholarship

Washington State Bar Association’s Juvenile Law Section is taking applications for its first annual Youth Law Bar Scholarship. The Juvenile Law Section seeks to recognize the commitment of law students who have shown excellence in preparing for the practice of Juvenile Law. Students who have demonstrated achievement and commitment in areas of child welfare and youth law practice are encouraged to apply. Awardees will receive a cash stipend to use toward their bar study in addition to a certificate indicating their award and recognition at the Juvenile Law Section’s award ceremony after its annual meeting on September 21, 2011 in downtown Seattle.

Requirements:
• Incoming 3L law students are eligible to apply.
• Students must show a commitment to and experience in practicing juvenile law in one of the following areas:
o Juvenile offender defense or prosecution;
