USPTO Virtual Patent Examiner Office Hours

If you have a computer engineering or electrical engineering background, you're invited to join United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recruiters for virtual office hours this Tuesday, May 24.

When you sign up for a 15-minute session of virtual office hours, you’ll get to chat one-on-one with USPTO recruiters who are current Supervisory Patent Examiners. They'll answer your specific questions about a patent examining career with the federal government, including the hiring process.

Annual Heartland Diversity Job Fair

This year's in-person Annual Heartland Diversity Job Fair (HDLJF) will be help August 12, 2022 – August 13, 2022, here at the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association headquarters.

Below is a quick overview of events, how to register, and information on accommodations.  You can also review the brochures.

• To register for the event, please visit law-kcmba.csm.symplicity.com/students.  Please note that there is no fee for students to register.
• Early bird registration deadline is May 31, 2022. 
• Registration forms are available in PDF format. Should you be aware of students who might need support accessing online registration, I am happy to help support them through the process.
• Student registration deadline is June 28, 2022.

Friday, August 12, 2022  -- We will kick off the event with registration, a diversity panel discussion featuring some of Kansas City’s finest diverse legal professionals, and a welcome reception at KCMBA Headquarters. Registration will continue on Saturday.

Saturday, August 13, 2022 -- The interview process will be conducted on a 50/50 scale.  Employers will pre-select half of the students whom they wish to interview.  The remaining half of the interview schedule will be filled based on lottery.  All interviews will be conducted at KMBA.

Accommodations

HDLJF will have a limited number of hotel rooms at an area hotel reserved for students who reside more than 50 miles from Kansas City.  Rooms will be $50, and are available on a first come, first served basis. 2022 Kate Seabright Scholarship

The Korean American Bar Association of Washington (KABA) is pleased and honored to announce it will be continuing the Kate Seabright Scholarship for a fourth consecutive year. This scholarship will provide $3,000-$8,000 to one or two law students attending law school in Washington State who demonstrate commitment to advocating for mental health awareness, promoting volunteerism, and increasing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

This scholarship will be awarded in the memory and honor of Kate Seabright.  Funding for the scholarship is made possible through donations from Kate’s parents, Mike Seabright and Margaret Ahn Seabright, and her law firm, Fox Rothschild LLP.

Kate was a leader in the legal profession and in her law firm, dedicated to serving the Asian American legal community, and unwavering in her support of marginalized communities. Above all, Kate was an incredibly compassionate young woman, whose kindness and integrity will always be remembered.  

Eligibility Criteria

This scholarship application is open to any law student in good standing at any of the three law schools in Washington State.

Application Materials

The following materials should be delivered electronically as Microsoft Word or PDF documents to Chris Chang at kabawascholarships@gmail.com no later than 5:00 pm (PST) on May 20, 2022.

o   How do you demonstrate your commitment to factors detailed below under the selection criteria? (500-700 words)

o   How will you use these funds to advance your professional goals and the legal profession? (300 words)

Selection Criteria

The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the Kate Seabright Scholarship Committee, which is composed of Kate’s parents, an attorney from Fox Rothschild LLP, and a board member from KABA.

The following factors will be considered holistically in the selection process:

●   Commitment to volunteerism, working towards diversity and inclusion efforts to improve the legal profession, and/or advocating for mental health awareness;

●   Commitment or interest in serving the Korean American or Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) legal community;

●   Professional goals and advancement in legal profession; and

●   Economic need

Award Recipient

The scholarship recipient(s) will receive an acceptance letter. KABA kindly requests the scholarship recipients provide their photo and prepare a short statement (approximately 500 words) detailing their continued commitment to volunteerism, diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, and/or mental health advocacy as a future attorney to be published on the KABA website (www.kaba-washington.org).

Timeline

All application materials must be received by 5:00 pm (PST) on May 20, 2022.

Interviews will take place June 1 and June 6, 2022.

Recipients will be notified by June 17, 2022.

Ms. JD Fellowship and Scholarship Programs

2022 Ms. JD Fellowship Program

The Ms. JD Fellowship application is now open to second-year law students. This one-year program is designed to foster a commitment to excellence in a new generation of women attorneys, inspired by the generation of trailblazers who paved the way for their success. It is an opportunity to develop new skills, grow your network, and learn how to build and develop your personal brand.

Each Fellowship recipient is paired with a mentor chosen from among the Brent Award honorees, Spirit of Excellence Award recipients, and ABA Commission on Women in the Profession Commissioners. Accepted Fellows also receive invitations and financial support to attend ABA and Ms. JD events, specifically Ms. JD’s annual conference and the ABA’s annual meeting. 

Students can learn more and apply now on the Ms. JD Fellowship website. The deadline to submit an application is May 31, 2022.

2022 Ms. JD Public Interest Scholarship

The Ms. JD Public Interest Scholarship program provides a stipend to students as they pursue careers in public interest law. Current law students entering their second or third year at an ABA-accredited U.S. law school by the summer of 2022 are eligible to apply now. 

Former public interest scholarship award recipients have pursued internships in immigration law, women’s rights, public health, public defense, government at all levels, and criminal justice reform. 

Students can apply now on the Ms. JD Public Interest website. The deadline to submit an application is May 23, 2022.

LawYours: Diversifying the Legal Profession, A Summer Event for High School Students to Explore Law School

LawYours: Diversifying the Legal Profession 

LawYours is a free in-person event this summer dedicated to helping underrepresented* Puget Sound-area high school students (and 2022 graduates) explore the field of law as a career path. 

This all day event takes place on Seattle University School of Law's campus on Wednesday, August 10. 

Student participants will engage with a variety of diverse lawyers, law students, and law school faculty and staff on how to prepare for law school and represent communities and address issues they care about.

Please join us for this active day of discussion and activities around law and justice as a career. All meals provided free of charge.
