Employer Registration for On-Campus Interviewing

The Center for Professional Development invites you to register for Seattle University School of Law’s 2022 Winter or Spring On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Program. OCI is a great way to hire 1Ls and 2Ls for summer or school year internships and law clerk positions, and 3Ls for post-grad associate positions.

Winter OCI interviews will take place January 18-21 (virtual and in-person options are available); employer registration will remain open until December 15.

Spring OCI interviews will take place March 7-10 (virtual and in-person options are available); employer registration will remain open until February 11.

OCI is managed through our Symplicity system. To register for an OCI, first log in to Symplicity.  If you have never done so, you must first create an account. Go to Symplicity to sign up. Please complete the form (fields marked with an asterisk are required) and be sure to select “OCI” in the “Services Requested” section. Please read and accept our policy affirmation in Symplicity. Click on the box below it before you click on the "Submit" button. A username and password will be sent to you via email so that you may continue to access the system.

Once you log in to Symplicity, click on the “OCI” tab on the left side of the page. Then, click on the “Schedule Request” tab, followed by the “Request A Schedule” button. Please complete the "Schedule Request Form" for the appropriate session and click “Submit.”

Requests will be reviewed in the order in which they are received, and you will be contacted accordingly.

If you would prefer for the Center for Professional Development to collect resumes for your firm or organization rather than interviewing on campus, please complete the "Schedule Request Form" (per the instructions above) and select “Resume Collection” rather than “Interview.”

We are excited to have you join us! Feel free to contact Matt Etter, Director of Professional Development & Alumni Relations, if you have any questions.

ABA Litigation Section Judicial Intern Opportunity Program
Applications Accepted Beginning November 1

The American Bar Association’s Litigation Section is a place where law students become engaged in the legal profession and where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are advanced. One example is the Section’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP). The program is a summer internship program open to all first- or second-year diverse law students.

Selected students intern for six weeks or more during the summer with a participating state or federal judge. The program offers a $2,000 award to each selected student. Students can also elect law school credit or coordinate their award with their work/study financial aid.

JIOP will begin accepting applications for all students on November 1. The deadline for applying is January 7, 2022. Last year, JIOP offered internships to 164 law students representing 73 different law schools in locations throughout the country. This year's goal is to place 160 students. Summer 2022 placements will include a new JIOP location in Salt Lake City, UT.

Please review the program description and frequently asked questions. The program application and detailed program information are on the program website: ambar.org/jiop.

Contact JIOP Program Director Gail Howard with additional questions at gail.howard@americanbar.org or by phone at (312) 988-6348. Early applications are encouraged; last year’s program had more than 700 applications for 164 spots. Screening interviews are guaranteed for the first 500 applicants. Other students will be screened on an as-needed basis.

Membership in the ABA and Litigation Section is free for law students. Students can join at ambar.org/joinlt (or by calling 800-285-2221) for access to the Section’s multimedia resources for law students and young litigators, professional development opportunities, and content from 35+ practice-specific committees. WSBA Diversity Committee Seeks Law Student Representatives

Are you a law student who is passionate about improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession? If so, then apply to become a Law Student Representative on the Washington State Bar Association’s Diversity Committee!

The WSBA’s Diversity Committee is dedicated to implementing WSBA’s Diversity and Inclusion Plan, and its work promotes historically underrepresented groups to enter and stay in the profession of law. The Committee does this through collaborative relationships and community building activities that highlight numerous societal benefits of a diverse law profession.

The Diversity Committee is seeking Law Student Representatives to help facilitate collaboration with the law student population in Washington State. The Law Student Representatives will work alongside Committee members in areas including: providing feedback and guidance to the content of educational and other programs; representing the committee at activities and events; joining subcommittees as needed; deepening their own understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity issues and WSBA positions and programming priorities; and acting as ambassadors to members and stakeholders for the committee.

Law Student Representatives will also be responsible for:

  • Sharing information about Diversity Committee programs and resources with law schools and law students;
  • Providing insight and brainstorming along with the Diversity Committee at regular Committee meetings;
  • Assisting with any work delegated to them by the Diversity Committee as appropriate.

The commitment is about 4-5 hours per month.

US DOJ Cyber Fellowship

The U.S. Department of Justice just added a new Cyber Fellowship to the Attorney General’s Honors Program (HP) this year. The three-year Cyber Fellowship will provide selected attorneys the opportunity to handle emerging national security and criminal cyber threats, while rotating through multiple Department components that protect the nation from cyber threats including the Criminal Division, the National Security Division, and the U.S. Attorneys Offices.

Through this unique opportunity, Fellows will handle a broad range of the cyber cases handled by the Department to provide them with a comprehensive understanding of the Departments response to emerging and critical threats. Fellows can expect to investigate and prosecute state-sponsored cyber threats; transnational criminal groups; infrastructure and ransomware attacks; and the use of cryptocurrency and money laundering to finance and profit from cyber-based crimes.

Incoming Fellows must agree to a three-year commitment to the program and be able to secure a Top Secret security clearance.  All Fellows will be based in the Washington, D.C. area.  Fellows may be extended or converted to permanent without further competition or reapply to the Honors Program in a subsequent year provided they meet eligibility criteria.  Alternatively, as they approach the end of their three-year term, Fellows may apply to permanent positions within the Department that align with their interest.

HOW TO APPLY: The Cyber Fellowship has been added to the online Honors Program application "Components of Interest" screen as an informal participant to permit interested applicants who have not yet submitted their application to apply. Honors Program applicants who wish to apply but already submitted an application, should simply follow these steps.

Log back in to their online account and, in the "Action" column, select the red "Withdraw" button.

The system will ask them to confirm that they want to withdraw their application.

Once they confirm, they can go back in to their application to make any changes necessary by clicking the "Continue Application" button in the upper right portion of the browser screen.  Be sure to select “save and continue” to retain changes.

They MUST re-certify and re-submit their application prior to the application deadline - go through the same Certify & Submit process they did when first submitting their application.

If they have questions relating to modifying their application or experience technical difficulty, click the "Live Chat" button to the right side of the browser.

As a reminder, the deadline for law students and eligible graduates to submit their applications is Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at 11:59 PM ET.

Job Talk Tuesday: Jump In, The Water's Fine

"I might as well just jump in with both feet."

Erin Fullner, Director of Professional Development & Alumni Relations at SU Law

Sometimes the deep end is exactly where you need to be, so don't be afraid to jump in. "You don't know what you don't know" – be flexible, be bold, be open.

For this last Job Talk Tuesday of the season, CPD's own Erin Fullner focuses on flexibility, providing a reminder that your first job is about growth, and the best opportunities for growth sometimes show up in unexpected places.

You never know what each opportunity could bring, so it doesn't make sense to rule out possibilities before you've earnestly explored them, especially early in your career. Talk to Erin or one of the other advisors in the Center for Professional Development for guidance and encouragement.

Job Talk Tuesday: Step Up Your Game

"Step your game up - whether that's constantly improving your skills, constantly networking, or constantly looking for and doing things that will separate you from the competition."

David Tran, SU Law Class of 2015

David Tran, associate attorney at Helsell Fetterman, talks about his previous judicial clerkship and the value of looking at your early jobs in the law as an opportunity to develop skills. You don't have to know what area you want to practice in right off the bat; using your first job (or two) to build a varied skill set and explore options can help you find the right path for you.

"Be intentionally flexible," as David says. Most folks don't land right into their ideal job, so be open to things you may not have considered before - they can move you closer to your goals.

Job Talk Tuesday: Don't Be Afraid

"Don't be afraid to take a risk and follow your gut."

Kasha Roseta, SU Law Class of 2014

Don't be afraid to try things, don't be afraid to take risks, and don't be afraid to post a Job Talk Tuesday on a Thursday (that last one is very specific, so no need to commit it to memory). Adapting is key to your development as a professional, and knowing who you are and how to combine your strengths can help you successfully identify and make necessary change.

Kasha Roseta, Equity and Civil Rights Program Supervisor at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, discovered that combining her love for education and law was the winning formula for career satisfaction for her, but it took a willingness to try things, along with honesty and courage, to get there.

Job Talk Tuesday: Make A Name For Yourself

“To make a name for myself, I had to work at it.”

Javier Ortiz, SU Law Class of 2016

What is Job Talk Tuesday all about? Last summer, as our recent graduates faced an uncertain job market, we reached out to alumni who started their legal careers during the Great Recession for inspiration. Their stories of grit and messages of encouragement were so timeless that we’re bringing the series back this summer. Though the legal job market is healthy, flexibility is always a virtue in your first job search. As today’s Job Talk alum, Javier Ortiz, reminds us, we could spend days talking about resilience—so we will!

Spend some time with Javi, an associate at Beacon Attorneys, a boutique family law firm here in Seattle. Javi shares how he used his charisma and gift of gab to build experience and a network of attorneys. He made a name for himself, and you will too.

B4 OCI: Get the Real Story

The interviewing season for second year law students can be daunting and we want to help you navigate it successfully. Please join us for a panel discussion that will provide concrete and specific advice for the coming interview season. Our panel of partners and recruiting professionals will share their tips and suggestions with a particular focus on preparing for interviews – both OCI and callback interviews – and then navigating those interviews and the post-interview process. This event is for 2L law students participating in interviews during the summer of 2021.
