How Technology Impacts Civil Liberties: Town Hall Seattle, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14

Newly-emerging technologies affect us all in a multitude of ways and today’s turned-on, always-connected world has reached an all-time high. Nuala O’Connor, president of the Center for Democracy & Technology, will discuss how the internet and interconnected world shape our lives, impact our civil liberties, and inform our daily decisions. Other panelists include Ryan Calo, faculty director of the University of Washington’s Tech Policy Lab; Racquel Russell, Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs for Zillow; and Matt Wood, the General Manager of Product Strategy for Amazon Web Services. From the Internet of Things to the wireless technologies in automobiles, the panelists will explain the range of this digital world and what steps can be made to stay plugged in, while still maintaining personal privacy and security. The panel will be moderated by Jenny Durkan, former United States Attorney and Quinn Emanuel’s Global Chair of the Cyber Law and Privacy Group. Ira Rubinstein, CDT Board of Directors, Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor at NYU School of Law will be giving a special welcome to the program.

To help students prepare for Fall OCI, practicing attorneys in a variety of fields will be on campus to do mock interviews and provide individual feedback. This is a great opportunity to network and practice your interview skills with attorneys in a non-competitive, no-stress atmosphere. Students will be paired with an alumni practitioner for a practice interview. Students will prepare for it as if he/she were interviewing for a real position with the practitioner's firm, organization, or governmental agency. The interview will last 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of feedback.

Seattle University, the U.S. Commercial Service, and the Department of Homeland Security have teamed up to present the 2015 Seattle Export Controls Conference at the Seattle University School of Law, July 29-30, 2015.  This fast-paced seminar is geared toward both new and experienced export control professionals, who will benefit from:

Starbucks Mentorship Program (Deadline June 12, 2015)

Starbucks Law and Corporate Affairs Diversity Committee will kick off its fifth annual Diversity Mentorship Program this June.  This program will pair in-house L&CA attorney mentors with newer, diverse attorneys practicing in our local communities. Call for Authors: American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in its 2015 Warren E. Burger Prize. Authors should submit an original, unpublished, 10,000–20,000 word essay on a topic that addresses the issues of excellence in legal skills, civility, ethics, and professionalism. The winning essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review and the author will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The submission deadline for the 2015 Warren E. Burger Prize is July 1, 2015. Equal Justice Works Fellowships

Equal Justice Works is launching a nationwide competition to find seven passionate immigration attorneys to begin two-year, post-graduate Fellowships in September 2015!

Each Fellow will work with a prominent non-profit organization selected by Equal Justice Works in one of six cities - Denver, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Oakland, Sacramento, and San Francisco - to provide high-quality, high volume legal services to immigrants in the host organization’s community seeking relief under the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs. Services may include but are not limited to:

• conducting outreach to underserved populations to locate individuals eligible for DAPA or DACA relief;
• providing direct legal representation to assist with DAPA and DACA applications;
• creating and conducting culturally competent “know your rights” sessions;
• training and managing pro bono attorneys to expand DAPA and DACA services;
• preparing written brochures and/or manuals on DAPA and DACA issues for widespread distribution; and
• collaborating with other legal and non-legal service providers in the community to share information and run trainings.

The Equal Justice Works Fellowship Program provides financial and other forms of support to lawyers serving vulnerable individuals and communities throughout the United States. The two-year Fellowships offer salary (at least $41,000 annually), fringe benefits, generous loan repayment assistance, a national training and leadership development program, and other support services during the term of the Fellowship.

General Information about the Application Process

Candidates may submit applications here on our website from April 17 through June 1. Completed applications require a resume, personal statement, references, and two letters of recommendation.

Fellows will be placed at a host organization with expertise in immigration law chosen by Equal Justice Works. Candidates may request to be considered for multiple cities. Top-scoring candidates will interview with the host organization, but final selection of the Fellows will be made by an anonymous sponsor. Interviews will be conducted nationwide throughout June, and offers will be extended on a rolling basis beginning in July. Fellows will start work in September 2015.

To be considered, a candidate must be a qualified and dedicated graduate of an Equal Justice Works member school committed to working with immigrant populations. Individual candidates will be judged based on immigration law experience (in general and DACA/DAPA in particular); language skills; personal connection to the issues and to the locale; and strength of recommendations.

Student Applications Are Now Being Accepted for Inn of Court

Current 2L students are encouraged to apply for 2015-2016 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. Materials required are a resume and a letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students and applications will be reviewed by Professor Deborah Ahrens and Erin Fullner, Associate Director of the Center for Professional Development. 

Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter. The membership commitment consists of nine evening (5:30-8:00 pm) monthly meetings held the second Tuesday of each month September through May at Seattle University. The membership dues for 2015-2016 are $100, which will cover the cost of all the meals.

Applications for the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court are due Monday, April 13 by 4:30 p.m. Application materials can be submitted in person to Jessica Fuqua in the Dean’s Office or electronically at fuquaj@seattleu.edu.

Inn of Court serves as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to perpetuating high-quality, ethical lawyering. The general membership is made up of judges, attorneys with varying practice experience, and law students in their third year. The William L. Dwyer Inn of Court is part of the American Inns of Court, a national organization which is comprised of around 320 chapters and over 23,000 members.

Job Shadow Program Training

VABAW Summer Judicial Externship

The Vietnamese AmericanBar Association of Washington (VABAW) is sponsoring a summer judicial externship.  VABAW recognizes that a judicial externship will greatly enrich and broaden a law student’s legal education and experience.  To that end, VABAW is piloting this externship.  The 2015 externship will provide two law students with the opportunity to work at the King County Superior Court for a minimum of six weeks.  This is a unique opportunity be immersed in the local judicial process and gain first hand courtroom experience. VABAW Hồng Đức Clerkship: Work for a Top 10 International Law Firm and Live Abroad this Summer

The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington (VABAW) invites you to apply for the VABAW Hồng Đức Clerkship.

VABAW recognizes that an international perspective will greatly enrich and broaden a law student’s legal education and experience.  To that end, VABAW created the Hồng Đức Clerkship in 2007.  The 2015 Hồng Đức Clerkship will provide a law student with the opportunity to clerk at Hogan Lovells in Vietnam for a maximum of three summer months.  This is a unique opportunity to live in Vietnam and learn about international and comparative law by working at an international law firm.  The clerkship will award up to a total of $5,000, with approximately $2,000 applied to a round-trip airfare ticket to Vietnam and a maximum of $1,000 for each month of the clerkship paid directly to the clerkship recipient for living expenses.

2015 Air Force Summer Legal Internship

WSBA Volunteer Opportunities

The Washington State Bar Association is now recruiting volunteers to help advance the legal profession in two different ways:

Committee service
We will soon fill openings on 22 committees, boards and panels ranging from the Judicial Recommendation Committee to the Disciplinary Board. Most positions have two- or three-year terms, start on Oct. 1, and are open only to active WSBA members. There are exceptions, though, so please take a look at the application in myWSBA to determine your eligibility and learn more about these opportunities. Committee service gives you a chance to contribute to the legal community and to get involved with issues you care about. It’s also a great way to connect with other lawyers around the state. The application deadline is Feb. 27, 2015. Promoting professionalism
If you are interested in volunteering in a more task-specific way, consider participating in our new professionalism volunteer initiative. Opportunities include making professionalism presentations to law students, writing about professionalism for the WSBA’s magazine, NWLawyer and the blog, NWSidebar, leading professionalism discussions at bar association events, recognizing professionalism in the legal community, and reviewing the Creed of Professionalism. Clerkship Kickoff Meeting

If you're interested in a post-graduate judicial clerkship, be sure to attend one of the mandatory clerkship information sessions on March 5.

• March 5 at noon in room 309
• March 5 at 5:00 p.m. in room 327

State appellate and federal clerkships generally require applications a year or more in advance, so if you'd like to clerk in the fall of 2016, be sure to attend one of these meetings and plan to send applications this spring and summer. Most candidates will want to start applying as 2Ls.

State superior courts generally do not hire as far in advance, so 3L year is a good time to apply for those positions.

CPD runs a judicial clerkship program to help you create competitive application materials. In order to participate in the program, you must attend the kickoff meeting, where the judicial clerkship handbook will be distributed. If you have a class, externship, or work conflict, please contact Erin Fullner, we may be able to schedule a make-up session for those unable to attend one of the sessions.

Spring OCI

From Tuesday, March 10 through Friday, March 13, CPD will host a Spring On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Session, which will feature more than a dozen small and mid-size firms such as Christensen O'Connor Johnson Kindness, Pfau Cochran, Ahlers & Cressman, and Schlemlein Goetz Fick & Scruggs. There are spring and summer law clerk positions available as well as a few post-graduate opportunities. Deadline to apply is Monday, March 2.   

In addition to interviews, CPD will host an informal networking event on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:00 pm on the 2nd Floor Gallery open to all students, participating Spring OCI employers, and other small and mid-size firms. The networking event will provide students with a great opportunity to connect with attorneys. Student registration will begin on February 19. Stay tuned for more information.

Spring OCI Info Session

CPD will host a Spring On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Information Session on Thursday, February 19 at 12:00 pm in Room C1. This session will provide information about the upcoming OCI program and how to apply for summer law clerk and post-graduate opportunities. There are small and mid-size firm positions available, so please review the OCI information on Symplicity, which will be open for student viewing on February 19.

NW Public Service Career Fair - Time is Running Out!

Cocktail Reception in Hawaii: First and Second Year Law Students

7 small and mid-size law firms in Honolulu are hosting a cocktail reception.

This reception is not a job fair, and it is not intended to replace on-campus interviews or resume collection. However, unlike large firms, they find it challenging to annually conduct on-campus interviews at any campus because of their geographic location and the cost involved.

At the Catholic University of America, they've found that after completing their J.D., some graduates of Law programs decide to explore Law Librarianship as an alternative to the practice of law. In recent weeks, awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault has increased as high profile cases receive extensive coverage in the news and on social media. Is this trend increasing awareness and dialogue or reinforcing sensationalism and stereotypes? Can media attention further real individual or community action and reform? In this spirited and interactive session offered as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, attorneys and advocates will discuss the ways in which they support survivors of domestic violence, the media’s influence on domestic violence, and how students can actively  engage in this issues.

Speakers will include David Martin, Chair of Domestic Violence Unit at King County Prosecutor’s Office; Amanda Irwin, Accredited Representative at the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and Kim Morrill, Legal Advocate at New Beginnings. Co-sponsored by the Women’s Law Caucus.

The WA Initiative for Diversity and the Puget Sound Association of Legal Administrators are excited to host a "Professional Development Forum" to discuss how to be successful as a diverse attorney in the prevailing law firm culture.

Annual Criminal Law Soirée

The King County Washington Women Lawyers are hosting their Annual Criminal Law Soirée.
