CPD's seminar will introduce you to the rewarding world of public interest work! We will provide information and resources for finding positions in public criminal law, direct client services, law reform/policy and public interest law firms. We will also discuss opportunities for the coming summer and post-graduation as well as tips for drafting compelling applications, tailoring cover letters, and building a network within the public interest community. In addition, we will talk about how you can fund your own public interest opportunities through scholarships, fellowships and grants. In recent weeks, awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault has increased as high profile cases receive extensive coverage in the news and on social media. Is this trend increasing awareness and dialogue or reinforcing sensationalism and stereotypes? Can media attention further real individual or community action and reform? In this spirited and interactive session offered as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, attorneys and advocates will discuss the ways in which they support survivors of domestic violence, the media’s influence on domestic violence, and how students can actively  engage in this issues.

Speakers will include David Martin, Chair of Domestic Violence Unit at King County Prosecutor’s Office; Amanda Irwin, Accredited Representative at the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and Kim Morrill, Legal Advocate at New Beginnings. Co-sponsored by the Women’s Law Caucus.

Professional Development Forum

The WA Initiative for Diversity and the Puget Sound Association of Legal Administrators are excited to host a "Professional Development Forum" to discuss how to be successful as a diverse attorney in the prevailing law firm culture.

The purpose of this forum is to offer insight into law firm drivers and type of skills desired by law firm employers. By offering these insights, we hope to raise awareness of law firm drivers, how best to navigate the law firm system to advocate for better growth opportunities and how to assist in making law firm culture to be inclusive of all. 

The Forum will cover:
- Law firm economics
- Universal skills to be successful in the legal profession
- CLOSED DOOR Affinity Group Breakout Session

Learn About Tax LLM Programs and Tax/Estate Planning Practice

The Tax and Estate Planning Focus Areas are pleased to invite you to an information session about pursuing a masters degree (LL.M.) in tax law after graduating from law school. 

Professors Diane Lourdes Dick, John Eason (chair of the Estate Planning Focus Area), and Lily Kahng (chair of the Tax Focus Area) and will be on hand to talk about their practice experiences and to address questions such as, When do I need to apply to LLM programs?  Where should I apply and what are my chances of being admitted?  Will a tax LLM improve my marketability?  If so, how?  What JD classes do I need to take to prepare for the LLM program? 

 

The session will be held on Wednesday, October 15, @ noon in Room 109. Snacks will be served.

Annual Criminal Law Soirée

The King County Washington Women Lawyers are hosting their Annual Criminal Law Soirée. The purpose of the event is to highlight the work of KCWWL's Criminal Law section and to foster communication and collaboration among women lawyers. They will also be hosting Justice Mary Yu, of the Washington State Supreme Court, as a keynote speaker to discuss professionalism and civility in the courts.

CPD Interviewing Information Session TONIGHT at 5:30!

Attention Rising 2L and 3L Students: please join CPD for a seminar on effective interviewing skills TONIGHT at 5:30 p.m. in Room 109. If you have been selected to interview with a Session 1 OCI employer this presentation is not to be missed! We will provide strategies for tackling difficult interview questions, ideas for crafting great questions, and more.  No RSVP necessary.  Light snacks provided.

REMINDER & EXTENDED DEADLINE: OCI Session 1 Interview Scheduling

Please make sure to check Symplicity this Wednesday morning to see if you have been selected to interview with a Session 1 employer.  Note that this date has been extended for an additional day to allow employers more time to make their selections.  Session 1 employers have until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, to select students to interview.  (You should receive an email Wednesday morning notifying you of any employer who has selected you for an interview; however, you should still check Symplicity).  If you are selected, you must log-in to Symplicity and select your interview time at 9 a.m. on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20.  You will have until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 21 to schedule your interviews.  However, schedules can fill up quickly and your preferred time may not be available.  Log-in early and be prepared to be flexible. 

All Session 1 employer selections will be visible in Symplicity by 9 a.m. on Wednesday with the exception of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt.  CPD will notify the students selected to interview with Schwabe by email on Friday, August 22. 

If you are selected to interview as an alternate, you should receive email notification on Friday, August 22.  If you are selected as an alternate, you must log-in to Symplicity and select your interview time on Friday, August 22.  Alternates will have until 11:59 p.m. on August 22 to schedule interviews.

National Law Student Workers' Rights Conference

The 16th Annual National Law Students Workers' Rights Conference will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 17 and 18, 2014 at the Conference Center at the Maritime Institute, just outside of Baltimore, MD.

The conference's impressive lineup of speakers and workshop facilitators includes keynote speaker Nancy Schiffer, Member of the National Labor Relations Board.

OCI Session 2 Deadline: Monday, August 18 at Noon

The deadline to submit applications to OCI Session 2 employers is THIS MONDAY, AUGUST 18 AT NOON!

Employers seeking both 2Ls and 3L/4Ls will be interviewing during the second session, including the Washington Attorney General's Office (3 and 4Ls) and a number of great firms (2Ls).

Be sure to upload your perfected materials into Symplicity over the weekend, don't wait until the last minute!

Registration opens TODAY for the LARGEST PUBLIC INTEREST CONFERENCE and CAREER FAIR IN THE COUNTRY!

The Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair will be held on October 24 & 25 in Washington, D.C.  More than 1,200 students and 125 public interest employers will participate in this year’s conference.  Public interest employers conduct interviews (for 2Ls and 3Ls) for internship and full-time positions and meet with students (including 1Ls) in informal “table talk” settings to discuss public interest legal opportunities. The Conference and Career Fair also features workshops on various public interest careers and job search advice, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, and much more!
