Washington State Society of Healthcare Attorneys Kristin Miles Memorial Student Scholarship

The Kristin Miles Memorial Student Scholarship honors Kristin’s commitment to ensuring that law students have the opportunity to participate in Washington State Society of Healthcare Attorneys (WSSHA) programs. She was ever vigilant in reminding the Board of its obligations to advance the education of future members by making programs accessible to the law student community. While Kristin’s passion, dedication, and always present good humor cannot be replaced, WSSHA seeks to honor her by providing this support to law students each year.

The scholarship provides:

• All seminar fees to the WSSHA Annual Hospital & Health Law Mid-Year Seminar, November 1-2, 2019 in Vancouver, B.C.
• One night lodging at the conference hotel, the Pan Pacific
• $50/per diem for a maximum of two days

Eligibility:

Any second- or third-year J.D. student, as well as any LL.M. student, enrolled in a law school located in the state of Washington, including previous applicants not selected who are encouraged to re-apply.
WSSHA will select one winner from each law school located in the state of Washington.

Email a résumé and brief statement (1 page or less) about why you are interested in healthcare law to Deanna Bui at deanna@favros.com. Applications are due Monday, October 7, 2019.

Please note: The conference room rate at the Pan Pacific Hotel is available only until October 1st or until the reserved rooms have been taken. The winner of the Kristin Miles Memorial Student Scholarship will not be selected until after October 2nd, so students planning to attend the seminar are encouraged to reserve rooms before October 1st. Room reservations may be cancelled up to 24
hours prior to arrival.

Kristin Miles was a member of the WSSHA
Board of Directors from 2006 until her death in 2012.

Mock Interview Season, SIGN UP NOW!

It is about that time to start registering for a Mock Interview time slot. We encourage you to schedule an interview time in order to practice and polish your interview style with a Seattle U Law alumni. Here, you will also get the chance to learn how to refine your strategies for OCI and future interviews!

Mock interviews will take place:

• Saturday, July 20 from 10 am to 12:30 pm
• Wednesday, July 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm

What you should know:

• You will be paired with a practitioner for the half-hour sessions.
• 20 minutes of interviewing
• 10 minutes of feedback
• When possible, we will match you with a practitioner in your area of interest.
• Time slots are first come, first served and space is limited.

2020 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship

The 2020 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship application is now available.

$10,000 scholarships will be awarded to three diverse rising 2Ls for the summer of 2020. Recipients will also receive a a six-week, salaried 2L Summer Associate position in one of the firm’s offices.

Alliance for Equal Justice Legal Intern Orientation

Gonzaga University School of Law, Seattle University School of Law, and University of Washington School of Law are co-sponsoring the Alliance for Equal Justice Legal Intern Orientation. 

Sign up for the orientation to learn more about the Alliance for Equal Justice (a network of organizations in Washington State that furthers equity and justice by providing and supporting civil legal aid to low-income, vulnerable, and marginalized individuals and communities) and to explore how to make the most of your summer internship.

All law student interns are welcome to attend! The program will offer substantive training and an opportunity to meet with Alliance organizations.

The orientation will take place:

June 21 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm at Seattle University School of Law or Gonzaga University School of Law (with some joint sessions live-streamed to Spokane).

·      The U.S. Department of Justice Career Information Fair, Thursday, July 11, 2019, at 3:00 PM EST. The annual Career Information Fair is an opportunity for law students interested in the Honors Program (HP), Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP), and volunteer legal internships to learn more about the many offices and components at DOJ.  There is no interviewing at the fair, but attendees meet attorneys from throughout the Department and can ask questions.  The RSVP opens on June 19, 2019 at 12:00 PM EST.

Fall Moderate Means Practicum

Register now for the Fall Moderate Means Practicum, LPRC-425-A. This experiential learning course is 3 credits and meets Mondays and Wednesdays – 2:30 to 3:45 pm.

Looking for an opportunity to build your client interviewing skills?  Interested in family, consumer, or housing law and want to apply your learning to real clients’ cases?  Want to build or hone your issue-spotting and legal analysis skills?  Want to help moderate income individuals access low-cost legal services?  

This experiential course will give you the opportunity to: 
• Learn about the legal issues that low and moderate income clients most often encounter
• Conduct client interviews via telephone
• Perform legal analysis of interesting cases
• Work with attorneys throughout the state to provide representation
