Business Cards

CPD strongly recommends that law students purchase business cards. They are easy to carry and ensure that others will be able to contact you easily. You never know what will turn into a networking opportunity! You may order your cards from the Seattle University Reprographics Office in the basement of the Student Center Pavilion (just across Bellarmine Circle from the law school). That office knows how to format law student business cards.

Summer Funding for Public Interest Internships

EJW Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that in 2009 provided 373 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,000 education award voucher for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization. 10 SU students received this last summer! As a 2010 Summer Corps member, you will:
• Have access to Equal Justice Works’ network of alumni, experience and expertise as the nation’s largest provider of public interest opportunities for law students and attorneys;
• Serve a minimum of 300 hours at a nonprofit public interest organization of your choosing;
• Earn a $1,000 AmeriCorps education award voucher upon completion of 300 hours of service
that can be used to pay current educational expenses or qualified student loans;
• Gain first-hand experience and legal skills in areas such as client intake, representation and
legal research and writing; and
• Become an official member of AmeriCorps, one of the largest national service networks in U.S.
history.
Equal Justice Works aims to promote Summer Corps members who demonstrate innovation in meeting the needs of a marginalized community through the Summer Corps Standout program.

2010 Beyond Traditional Fair

Employers working in a variety of industries where the JD degree is highly valued will be available to share how they developed their career. Potential participants include people doing risk management, regulatory analysts, policy analysts, legal publishing, HR for major corporations, Federal Agents, as well as many others. If you are considering a career outside the traditional practice of law, then the fair is not to be missed.

2010 Small Firm Fair

There is no better way to start connecting with employers and building relationships in the community. Last year, over 40 firms and over 150 students attended. Students have secured jobs, found mentors, learned about specific fields of law, and connected with members of the bar in a relaxed setting through this event. During the fair, employers will meet with students to discuss their practices and how to effectively develop opportunities within the profession. Whether you already have a job or not, this fair is not to be missed.

2010 Hong Duc Clerkship

The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington announces the 2010 Hung Duc Clerkship. The clerkship provides a law student with the opportunity to clerk at an international law firm in Vietnam for summer 2010. The Clerkship Recipient has the unique opportunity to learn about the local cultures and customs firsthand while living in Vietnam and to learn about international and comparative law by working at a major law firm.

Representing Limited English Proficient Clients and How to Work with an Interpreter

No matter what area of law you are considering, it is likely that at some point during your career you will find yourself working with an interpreter. Due to popular demand, the SU Law Clinic and ATJI are collaborating again to present this training opportunity for all law students to learn the critically important skills required to adequately represent limited English proficient (LEP) clients.

In this training, you will learn: how to identify when your client’s LEP status has impacted the legal case, what legal remedies are available in the LEP context, what ethical requirements exist in working with LEP clients, and how to effectively work with interpreters in the course of representing LEP clients.

If you are a student in SU's Clinical Program or if you are thinking of taking a Clinic next year, this training will prove especially useful! The skills and information are also highly important for your work in externships or legal employment.

You will receive a Certificate of Completion for completing the 3-hour training, which will be a useful tool in your career development efforts.

If so, you might want to consider participating in AtJI's Immigrant Detainee Justice Project.
Through the Immigrant Detainee Justice Project, SU law students will attend, observe, and analyze detained court proceedings which take place at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. The purpose of the observation is to provide valuable information about the visiting rotating immigration judges presiding over detainees at the Northwest Detention Center. 1L Intern Positions and 3L Post-Graduate Positions with the Army JAG

The Army JAG is currently accepting applications from 1Ls interested in Summer Internships with the JAG Corps, and from 3Ls interested in post-gradate, active duty positions. The application deadline is January 29th, and a JAG representative will be on campus on February 1st to conduct interviews with interested applicants.
