Please join Washington Sea Grant Director Penny Dalton; WSG Education Specialist Nancy Reichley; and WSG Science Writer David Gordon for a presentation about fellowships offered by Sea Grant. Currently or soon-to-be open fellowships include:

• 2013 Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship: This fellowship provides eligible graduate students a one-year work experience on the staff of the U.S. Congress or with a Federal agency dealing with marine issues.

• 2012 Coastal Management Fellowship: This two-year opportunity matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by each state and selected by NOAA’s Coastal Services Center.

• 2012 Sea Grant/NOAA Fisheries Fellowships in Population Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics: This program offers two- and three-year research opportunities to Ph.D. candidates interested in either population dynamics and stock assessment or in marine resource economics.

• 2012 WSG Science Writing Fellowship: WSG Science Writing Fellows assist in the development of a variety of communication products about Sea Grant projects and issues in marine-related research, education, and outreach; upper division undergraduates and graduate students are eligible to apply.

• 2012 Marc Hershman Marine Policy Fellowship: This program places two to four graduate students or recent graduates for one year with state agencies in Olympia or Tacoma, WA, working on ocean and coastal science and management issues.

How are you using social media right now? If you're not using it to present yourself in a professional manner and/or network with potential employers, you'll want to attend this webcast entitled Using Social Media to Aid Your Job Search.

On Thursday, November 10th LexisNexis® will host a panel of experts to show you how to use social media to create your own "social brand" in the legal profession, and how to use that brand to promote yourself to prospective employers. The panel includes:

• Tim Tyrell-Smith, a popular blogger and author on career strategy. Tim has written two career books entitled 30 Ideas and Headstrong. He is also a regular contributor to U.S. News and World Reports. He will speak about using social media to create a "social brand."
• Catherine Sanders Reach, the Director of the Legal Technology Resource Center at the American Bar Association (ABA). Catherine has presented to many law students on the use of social media and will explain how it applies to the legal profession.
• Daniel A. Schwartz, a partner at Pullman & Comley LLC and author of the Independent Connecticut Employment Law blog. Dan uses social media to grow his own legal career and will show you how he uses it so effectively.

LLM Info Session

Learn about tax LLM programs and tax/estate planning practice: The Tax and Estate Planning Focus Areas are pleased to invite you to an information session about pursuing a masters degree (LLM) in tax law after graduating from law school. The session will be held on Thursday, November 10, at 4 pm, in Room C-6. Professors John Eason (chair of the Estate Planning Focus Area), Lily Kahng (chair of the Tax Focus Area) and James Puckett will be on hand to talk about their practice experiences and to address questions such as, When do I need to apply to LLM programs? Where should I apply and what are my chances of being admitted? Will a tax LLM improve my marketability? If so, how? What JD classes do I need to take to prepare for the LLM program? Snacks will be served.

Janet D. Steiger Fellowship

The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work for the consumer protection and antitrust departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States, as well as the Georgia Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs. The eight-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General (“NAAG”), as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service.

The first and second year law students who have served as Steiger Fellows have characterized their experiences as truly rewarding, often well beyond their expectations. A number of students have said that for the first time they are considering law careers in public service. Each of the highly-motivated Steiger Fellows provides tangible, meaningful assistance to states and territories that are in substantial need of additional resources to fulfill their consumer protection mission. Attorneys General Offices that have hosted Steiger Fellows in the past have characterized the Fellows’ work as exemplary, and have often described the students as some of the most talented interns the offices have ever attracted.

George Van Cleve’s legal career has included private practice, public service, and the publication of a major historical work on slavery’s role in the creation of the American constitutional scheme. Please join him as he shares his reflections on, among other things:

his involvement in the Congressional investigation into the Iran-Contra scandal;

his participation in the litigation arising out of the Exxon Valdez oil spill;

and why he decided to leave a successful practice and pursue an advanced degree in history.

Alumni from a variety of fields will join us to talk about the how they overcame a job market that seemingly provided little opportunity and how they struggled to find any job at all, but ultimately launched their career. Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition

The GRAMMY Foundation is sponsoring the 14th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition.

The GRAMMY Foundation, in concert with some of the nation’s most prominent entertainment attorneys, established the Entertainment Law Initiative (ELI) in 1998 to promote discussion and debate about the most compelling legal issues facing the music industry today. The initiative also endeavors to promote future careers in entertainment law by seeking out the nation’s top law students and giving them invaluable networking and educational opportunities.

The Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition invites law students to write a 3,000-word paper on a compelling legal topic facing the music industry today. The contest culminates with the winning student authors presenting their essays at the prestigious ELI luncheon.

Public Interest Grants

The Berkeley Law Foundation (BLF) is now soliciting proposals for one-year public interest legal projects to begin in 2012. To be considered, proposals must be received electronically by 11:59
p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012.

BLF traditionally awards one to two grants per year to individuals undertaking public interest law projects that will serve legally disadvantaged or politically under-represented groups and promote systemic change. We view our grants as seed money for innovative projects that will immediately provide sorely needed legal services and will continue providing such services for years to come.

What BLF Will Fund
BLF seeks to fund projects that include the following components: legal advocacy, community education, and/or policy change in areas affecting groups of people who generally lack access to the legal system.

KCBA-YLD Speed Networking Event

Join us for an evening of speed networking. The KCBA/YLD (Young Lawyers Division) provides professional development opportunities and information resources to lawyers who have been in the profession for five years or less or who are 36 years old and under. YLD also delivers law-related services to the general public, including community education and information as well as advice and consultation through the Neighborhood Legal Clinics.

YLD has a board of 16 volunteer trustees. The Board oversees YLD's member services and community programs.
