YLD Volunteer Opportunity

The Young Lawyers Division of the King County Bar Association is looking for volunteers to assist experienced Union Gospel Mission staff in providing much needed resources for Seattle’s homeless population.

Volunteers and staff will drive around downtown Seattle together in the UGM Search & Rescue Van on Wednesday, March 29 and invite those sleeping on the street to come to the UGM shelter for the night. If they decline, volunteers will hand out supplies from the van (blankets, food, hot drinks).

CPD will be offering a series of working lunch and working dinner sessions for students who want to learn about networking and interviewing basics. Bring your laptop and your lunch/dinner to CPD and come learn about effective strategies in small group sessions. These working lunches and dinners will be limited to five students per session, so RSVP to Erin Fullner right away if interested.

Call for Authors: American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in its 2017 Warren E. Burger Prize.

Authors should submit an original, unpublished, 10,000–20,000 word essay on a topic that addresses the issues of excellence in legal skills, civility, ethics, and professionalism. The winning essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review and the author will receive a cash prize of $5,000.

The submission deadline for the 2017 Warren E. Burger Prize is July 1, 2017.

PILF Summer Grant Info Sessions

If you plan to work for a public interest employer this summer in an unpaid internship, come learn more about Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) Summer Grants! You may be eligible for funding ($4,400).

The PILF Summer Grant Program provides funding to Seattle University School of Law students who provide quality legal services to low-income and marginalized communities through unpaid summer jobs at nonprofit or public agencies. The Program is funded through a variety of sources, including individual donors, and law firm and institutional partners, however, the PILF Auction on March 4th is the principal funder.

Two info sessions will take place on March 7, covering eligibility and the application and decision process:

• Tuesday, March 7, Noon in Room 109
• Tuesday, March 7, 4 p.m. in Room C7

To apply for a PILF Summer Grant you must have an offer from a public interest employer by the time you submit your application (hardship situations will be considered if you have interviewed with a likely employer by the time you submit your application).

Attention Alumni: WSBA Has Extended the Deadline to Apply to Serve on Committees, Boards, and Panels

Applications are still being accepted through myWSBA.org from members interested in serving on WSBA’s committees, boards, and panels. 

Application deadline: Extended to March 10, 2017

Committee service gives you an opportunity to contribute to the legal community and your profession, a chance to get involved with issues you care about, and a way to connect with other lawyers around the state. 

There are openings on 22 different committees, boards, and panels, including the Court Rules and Procedures Committee, the Judicial Recommendation Committee, the Disciplinary Board, and the Hearing Officer Panel. Most positions begin Oct. 1. Some positions are open only to attorney members.
