2014 Lavender Law® Conference & Career Fair


The Lavender Law Conference & Career Fair will take place on August 21, 2014 at Sheraton Time Square in New York. The Continuing Legal Education Conference will take place August 22-23.
 
Lavender Law is attended by 1,600 legal professionals every year. More than 450 law students are given the opportunity to speak with more than 150 recruiters at the career fair. The continuing legal education conference features more than 40 workshops discussing topics such as LGBT athletes, criminal justice/prisons and updates in transgender law.
 
Lavender Law recruiters come from across the country and represent law firms, Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. View a current list of recruiters.

For those who cannot afford to attend the career fair, the LGBT Bar offers a limited number of Law Student Scholarships to students who cannot otherwise attend. Scholarships cover the cost of registration only. Room block rates are available for the conference hotel.

The deadline to apply for positions at the Northwest Minority Job Fair has been extended until the morning of Friday, August 1. Do not wait until the last minute because the exact time the system will stop accepting applications has not been disclosed.  Get details here.

OCI Bidding for All Sessions Begins Today!


Students may begin to submit their applications to OCI employers on Symplicity TODAY.  Applications may be made for employers in Sessions 1, 2 & 3. While there is no advantage to submitting your application immediately, be aware of deadlines for each session.  The deadline to apply to employers in Session 1 is Monday, August 11 at NOON. Don’t forget, the CPD is available to review your application materials before you apply!

KCBA Young Lawyers Division Free CLE

The KCBA Young Lawyers Division is proud to present a free afternoon CLE: Managing Client Expectations in Mediation (1.00 General CLE Credit). Thursday, July 24, 2014, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., WAMS, 600 University Street, Suite 900, Seattle. Presented by: Michele Sales, Mediator, Arbitrator.

Program Details
This program will discuss the importance of managing client dollars and expectations before and during mediation, with tips for valuing your case and timing the mediation session.

Michele Sales
A full-time mediator and arbitrator through WAMS, Ms. Sales has a primary mediation practice focus on employment-based disputes and serious personal injury claims. She in an experienced litigator in Superior and Federal courts, having tried liability and personal injury cases lasting four weeks or more. She has served as an instructor for mediation, negotiation and trial skills seminars sponsored by Washington State Association of Justice, Washington Defense Trial Lawyers, the Defense Research Institute and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

Even if you can’t make the CLE make sure to stop by the WAMS office for this month’s free happy hour, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. This is a great chance to network and enjoy free drinks and appetizers with your peers. Seattle University School of Law’s alumni board, LAB, is seeking new members to join the Board for the 2014 - 2017 term.

The mission of the Law Alumni Board (LAB) is to protect and enhance the strength of Seattle University School of Law’s academic and professional development programs, to promote and extend the positive profile of the School of Law, to support students and alumni in achieving their professional goals, and to ensure the fulfillment of the School of Law’s mission to educate powerful advocates for justice.

The LAB is an active, working board and meets at least four times per year. The first meeting of the year will be on September 10 from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. in Sullivan Hall. Each LAB member serves a three-year term, with the possibility of renewing for one additional year. Every member of LAB serves on one or more of the following committees:  Development, Mentoring and Professional Development, Outreach, and Strategic planning. More information about the LAB and its committees can be found here.

If you are interested in joining the LAB, please complete and submit the application form by August 4, 2014.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson will host an open house in his Olympia/Tumwater office for those who wish to learn more about the office and how to apply for attorney positions.  This event is open to all current and incoming 3Ls, judicial clerks, and licensed attorneys.

On Campus Interview (OCI) Information Session

Attention rising 2Ls and 3Ls: CPD will host an On Campus Interview (OCI) Information Session on Tuesday, July 15 at 5:00 pm in Room 110. OCI is an excellent way for rising 2Ls to apply for summer associate and law clerk positions for summer 2015 and for rising 3Ls to apply for post-grad jobs. Evening and joint JD students, you may apply to OCI employers as a rising 2L in both your 2 and 3L year, and for post-grad positions when you're a rising 4L. There are firm and government opportunities available, so please review the OCI information on Symplicity, which opened for student viewing on July 1.

At the session, we will cover tips for your application materials, the mechanics of how to submit applications through Symplicity (OCI applications are completed online), and an overview of the "bidding" and interview process. The OCI process is competitive, so planning ahead will help give you an edge!

CPD Interviewing Information Session

Please join CPD for a seminar on effective interviewing skills on Wednesday, August 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 109. We will provide strategies for tackling difficult interview questions (including those tricky behavioral interviewing questions), tips on how to answer the ubiquitous "Tell me about yourself" interview opener, ideas for crafting great questions for your interviewers, and more.
