Substantial Pro Bono Opportunity with Pierce County Juvenile Court - Dependency and Probation Unit

The Pierce County Juvenile Court - Dependency and Probation Unit represents guardians ad litem and probation officers at Pierce County Juvenile Court. The office seeks a motivated law student intern to take on the following responsibilities and more:
- Legal research
- Drafting motions, responses to motions, declarations in support/opposition to motions
- Acting as support person during motion dockets, which includes filing court orders with clerk's office, meeting with attorneys as well as guardians ad litem and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), tracking status of motions, organizing motion pleadings, serving as court runner, and more

This opportunity is open to all law students, 1L-4L. Must be available on Wednesday afternoons after 1 p.m.

Consider a Career in School Law

The National School Board Association's Council of School Attorneys would like to increase the number of new lawyers choosing to become K-12 school attorneys. They will hold their annual School Law Practice Seminar in Seattle on October 15-17, 2009. They are offering law students the deeply discounted rate of $75 for the seminar (regular tuition is $725). Volunteer as a witness or juror in a mock trial for the WSBA

The Washington Young Lawyers Division of the WSBA is looking for students to volunteer as witnesses and jurors in a mock trial for its Trial Advocacy Program. Participating students will be able to connect with local practitioners and judges during the mock trial, and at a networking event afterward.

Indian Law CLE

UW is hosting an Indian Law CLE on September 10 -11. SU students will be allowed to attend at no cost. The students will have the option to purchase materials for $25. Networking Seminar

Student Fellows Wanted for the Kuramatsu Center

The Korematsu Center for Law and Equality will be hiring at least two work-study eligible students to be Student Fellows of the Center. The duties will include working on the Korematsu Center’s advocacy projects, where Student Fellows will (1) help develop amicus strategy; (2) research issues and draft portions of the brief; and (3) engage in public education and community organizing to secure sign-ons by community groups. Other duties will include helping with Korematsu Center events and other projects.

Student Fellows will be expected to work 8-10 hours a week. Compensation will be at the School of Law work study rates.

New public interest positions in WA and NY

A new 1-year EJW AmeriCorps fellowship attorney position in Seattle has been announced, to focus on foreclosure issues. The EJW link also links to other open AmeriCorps fellowships across the country.

Summer 2010 intern positions at large public interest organizations are starting to be posted. A position with a large legal services organization in New York has just been announceed.

WSBA Releases Demographic Counts

The Washington State Bar Association has released their membership demographics for 2008. Included categories for reporting include size of practice environment in which the reporter works, substantive practice areas, and languages spoken.

Public Interest Perspectives - An Introductory Training for Private Sector Attorneys Entering Public Interest Placements

The Association of Pro Bono Counsel and NALP are pleased to announce a free national training for attorneys beginning volunteer public interest placements. Complimentary online registration is now open at: http://tinyurl.com/meggy8.

The program is intended for private sector attorneys who are beginning public service placements with legal aid and other nonprofit legal organizations. It will provide an overview of the differences in law firm and nonprofit practice settings, insight on working with low-income clients, and background on the economic challenges presently being confronted by the public interest community. While the training focuses particularly on practice in civil legal services organizations, the information is relevant to most public interest settings.

Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair

If you are interested in a career in public interest, you are likely familiar with Equal Justice Works. EJW strives to mobilize and prepare the next generation of attorneys committed to equal justice. The EJW Conference and Career Fair will be Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25 in Washington, D.C. If you are interested in working in public interest in other regions of the country, you should consider attending the Conference and Career Fair. This year, CPD and AtJI will cover the registration fee and reimburse up to 15 students up to $250 for expenses incurred to attend the event and a SU in D.C. Alumni event on the Oct. 22 (a $200 reimbursement will be available to students attending only the Conference and Career Fair).

To apply for the reimbursement stipend, please submit a resume and one page statement of interest regarding why you want to attend the conference/career fair to Stacey Lara-Kerr in CPD by Thursday, Sept. 10. Students selected to receive the reimbursement will be notified on Wednesday, Sept. 16. If you have questions about the Conference and Career Fair, please contact Stacey Lara-Kerr.

Exciting Federal Judicial Internship Opportunity

Chief Judge Andrew S. Effron of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces anticipates hiring an intern for summer 2010. Consideration will be given to applicants who have completed at least one semester of law school at the time of the application. The application period will begin February 1, 2010 and will continue until the position is filled. The US Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces exercises world-wide appellate jurisdiction over court-martial cases involving US military personnel. Cases on the docket address a broad range of legal issues, including constitutional, criminal, administrative, and national security law.
