Judicial Intern Opportunity Program Application Opens November 2

ABA Litigation Section Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

The American Bar Association Litigation Section invites first- and second-year law students to apply for the 2027 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP). JIOP provides law students with the opportunity to gain meaningful experience in the judiciary while building professional skills, relationships, and connections to the legal community.

JIOP supports the ABA’s goal of eliminating bias and advancing diversity in the legal profession. All first- and second-year law students are welcome to apply.

Selected students spend at least six weeks during the summer interning with a participating state or federal judge. JIOP provides a monetary award to each selected student, and students may also elect to receive law school credit when permitted by the law school.

2027 Applications Open November 2

Applications for the Summer 2027 JIOP class will open November 2, 2026. The application deadline is January 8, 2027. Students can apply starting November 2nd at ambar.org/JIOP.

In 2026, JIOP placed more than 160 law students in judicial internships in 11 locations across the country. For more than 25 years, the program has helped thousands of law students gain firsthand experience in the courts and make connections that can help shape their legal careers.

Students, review the program description and frequently asked questions. The application and complete program information are available at ambar.org/JIOP. Applications are accepted electronically through the JIOP website.

Apply Early! Interest in JIOP continues to be strong, with more than 900 applications received for the 2026 program. Screening interviews are guaranteed for the first 500 applicants. Applicants are moved forward for judicial consideration on a rolling basis as soon as screening results are final, so students are strongly encouraged to apply early.

ABA and Litigation Section membership is free for law students. Membership gives students access to professional development opportunities, networking, and content from the Section’s practice-specific committees. Students can learn more and join at ambar.org/ltjoin and explore the Litigation Section at ambar.org/litigation.

Former JIOP participants are also available to speak with law students about their internship experiences and the value of participating in the program.
