Carl Maxey: A Fighting Life
Film Screening, Thursday, February 9
Noon to 1:00 pm in Room 110
Celebrate Black History Month with Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ) by attending a lunch hour movie, Carl Maxey: A Fighting Life. Opening remarks will be made by Hardeep Rekhi, Chair of the WSAJ Diversity Committee. Carl Maxey rose from a tragic childhood to make his own opportunities. He found his calling in law, becoming the first black lawyer in Eastern Washington to pass the bar exam. Maxey displayed his judicial prowess representing high profile white defendants, as well as championing black clients, often pro bono, and using litigation to dismantle systemic oppression in the Northwest. Often, Maxey’s mere threat of a lawsuit was enough to convince bars, restaurants, and clubs to desegregate. Pizza and soda will be provided. Please RSVP in Symplicity.
