It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas, OCI prep time!

CPD fields a lot of questions about grammar issues that frequently pop up in legal resumes and cover letters this time of year. In particular, we get quite a few questions about capitalization.

When grappling with resume and cover letter questions, capitalization related or otherwise, please come to us. We’re here to help you figure these things out; the right answers aren’t always intuitive. Meanwhile, here’s a quick capitalization refresher as you fine tune your OCI applications.

Always Include a Cover Letter

Be sure to include a cover letter when you send an application/post your resume for a job on Symplicity. Include the letter even when the employers does not specify "cover letter" among the required application documents. They don't mention it primarily because they assume you will include a cover letter.

Cover letters tie together the various parts of your application and make the case for why the employer should hire you. Don't miss this opportunity to tell your story and demonstrate your writing skills.

Addressing Cover Letters

Avoid sending a cover letter addressed to "To Whom It May Concern." If the job announcement instructs that resumes be sent to William Smith, address the letter to "Mr. William Smith" and, in the salutation, write, "Dear Mr. Smith:". Example:

Mr. William Smith
Jones, Jones & Jones
123 A Street
Anytown, WA 90000

[indent] Re: Legal Internship, Summer 2011

Dear Mr. Smith: [that's a colon, not a comma]

If there is no name given, take the time to look up the name of the General Counsel or call and ask the receptionist for the name of the Hiring Partner at the firm.
