Loyola Patent Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of law is hosting the 2013 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1 in Chicago, Illinois.  This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs. 

Last year roughly 125 employers, 190 law schools, and 1,700 law students from across the country participated in the program.  The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and transcripts to bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the materials of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program.  Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program.  You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

Below is information about two summer clerkship opportunities for non-graduating students (including 1L students).

The two scholarships are sponsored by the Labor and Employment Sections of the WSBA and the KCBA, respectively.  The clerkship awards fund summer employment with a public interest component in the labor and employment law field.  You can find the detailed application Guidelines on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.  If you are interested, review the guidelines and prepare now by contacting the potential placement organization where you would like to gain experience and interviewing to determine if it is willing to host you for summer employment if you win one of the two summer clerkship competitions.  The best news is that when the potential employers understand that the student’s salary is paid for, they are thrilled and often jump at the chance to have a fully-funded summer employee, providing you with the incredible opportunity to gain experience in the field!

Interested students should: 

1.    Read the Guidelines posted on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.

2.    Decide on the qualifying agency that you would like to work for.  (The Guidelines include a list of qualifying agencies.  If an organization of your choice does not appear on the list, however, inquire with Professor Natasha Martin or Professor Charlotte Garden to determine whether the agency meets the requirements for acceptable placements set forth in the Guidelines.

3.    Interview with your chosen agency and verify that, if you win one of the awards, it will allow you to work there fully funded this summer. Then submit your application by 12:00 NOON on FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2014. (Candidates submit only one application which is considered for both awards by the selection committee.)

Washington Defense Trial Lawyers Speed Networking Event

Law & War: An International Humanitarian Law Workshop

Content: This workshop features lectures and hands-on exercises that guide
participants through an intensive examination of International
Humanitarian Law (IHL) with a focus on its application to combatants
and civilians. Sessions will be led by law professors, military
professionals, and non-governmental organizations. Topics include:
- Protections for individuals under IHL
- Means and Methods of Warfare
- Enforcement IHL
- Non-state Actors
- Direct Participation in Hostilities
- Targeted Killings
 

Eligibility: The workshop is available to full– and part–time law students who are
attending a U.S. or Canadian law school as of the date of the program.
Students will be expected to attend all sessions of the entire program.
Students who complete the workshop will receive a Certificate of
Completion.

Costs: Participants will be asked to pay a $20 non-refundable fee for the
workshop, the course materials, morning refreshments, lunches, and an
evening reception on Saturday, March 1st. Students will be responsible
for their own transportation and lodging.

Beyond Grades: How to Distinguish Yourself

Ken Payson is Davis Wright Tremaine’s Seattle office hiring partner, and he has been actively involved in the Asian Bar Association of Washington, the Washington State Minority & Justice Commission, and the Minority Bar Associations of Washington.  His practice focuses on class action defense, other complex commercial litigation and appellate work, particularly with respect to claims under state and federal consumer protection laws.  Mr. Payson has nearly a dozen years of experience in law firm hiring, and he will share his views on what makes an applicant stand out.  He will talk about looking beyond grades and developing other important personal and professional attributes.  He will also discuss the importance of volunteer activity, pro bono work, and service to the profession.

1L Diversity Mock Interview Event

The key to getting any job is establishing a rapport and intelligently explaining your credentials in an interview. Fortunately, this is a learned skill. Take advantage of this opportunity to interview with local attorneys. The Mock Interview Program is a fantastic way to practice your interviewing skills, gain valuable feedback, and to make connections with established attorneys.

This event is being sponsored by the WSBA Committee for Diversity and will focus on students applying to the minority clerkship programs. It will take place on February 13th, in the CPD offices.

Air Force JAG Open House

The McChord Field Legal Office is happy to announce that we will be hosting our JAG Open House on February 7, 2014.  This is a full day event taking place on McChord Field at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.  This is a great opportunity to meet current Judge Advocates and ask questions.  Students will arrive at 9:00AM and be brought to the legal office to meet the McChord Air Force Base Staff Judge Advocate, learn about the 62nd Airlift Wing Mission, learn more about the application process, benefits, JAG responsibilities and opportunities as well as hear from a squadron commander.  There will be a Q&A portion and we will be eating lunch on McChord Field.  We will close the day with a tour of the base and a static C-17. Students will be ready to leave around 3:00PM.

1Ls - Applications are now being accepted for the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office Summer Program.

The externship program is designed to give students a meaningful experience and exposure to our law practice. It is an excellent way to become acquainted with the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, pursue an interest in criminal law, and determine whether trial practice is a future career path. The extern positions are unpaid, but many law schools offer credit for externship programs.

Externs will be assigned to one or more deputies and assigned to a unit in the Criminal Division. Descriptions of these units can be viewed here.

Duties may include witness contact, coordination and interviews; legal research and writing; and general preparation and support during trial.

Peggy Browning Fund 2014 Summer Fellowships

Applications are now being accepted for the Peggy Browning Fund's 2014 Summer Fellowship. These positions are open to 1L and 2L students, with a deadline of January 17th.

About the Program:

Our core program is the Summer Fellowship Program, which is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at labor-related organizations around the country.  In 2014, we will support between 60 and 70 funded summer fellowships, plus one part-time funded School-Year Fellowship at the Chicago Newspaper Guild for 2014 - 2015.

The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers' rights.  We routinely collaborate with 130 participating law schools and selected mentor organizations nationwide.

Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $5,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend. (See each fellowships description for details)

We recruit interested students and work closely with our mentor organizations to ensure that each fellow will experience unique and challenging work assignments.   Our strong relationships with leading national labor leaders, labor attorneys and labor law professors make our fellowship program the preeminent of its kind.
Peggy Browning Fellows gain the practical skills required to represent workers.  They enjoy opportunities to network with their peers and leaders in the field of public interest labor law.  The mentor organizations and their clients benefit from the services provided by this talented and commited group.

Since our beginning in 1997, we have placed over 500 law students in highly competitive fellowship positions with unions, worker centers, the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Labor Relations Board, the Federal Labor Relations Authority and union-side law firms.  Peggy Browning Fellows have advocated for thousands of workers and their families nationwide.  More than 120 Peggy Browning Alumni are currently working in workers' rights labor law or public interest law.

Northwest Public Service Career Fair

Registration is now open for the 2014 Northwest Public Service Career Fair. This job fair takes place every year in Seattle and in Portland, and is a fantastic way to secure positions in public interest.

Check out the fair website to see which employers will be participating and holding interviews this year. Remember - the deadline to register and to apply for an interview is 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 13th.

Table Talk registration will be open through the day of the actual event, but if you are interested in requesting a formal interview with any of the firms, you MUST submit all requested application materials by January 13th.

DC Summer Internships

If you plan to take part in our Summer in DC Program sure to keep an eye on our DC page for summer internship options. New ones are being added regularly, so it's important to check back.

The program has an application deadline of January 31, 2014, but a few of the internships have earlier individual deadlines.

One to keep an eye on is the internship with the American Constitutional Society for Law and Policy (Job #4671 on Symplicity). It's a great position with a December 15th deadline.
