Fall OCI Deadline for Session 1 Has Been Extended!

ATTENTION STUDENTS!

Due to a university-wide email problem that began over the weekend, we are extending the deadline to apply to Fall OCI Session 1 employers. The deadline will be extended until 5:00 pm TODAY, Monday, July 27. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding Fall OCI or you are awaiting documents from a counselor, please call Junsen Ohno, (206) 398-4105, or a CPD counselor as soon as possible.

17th Annual National Law Students Workers' Rights Conference

For details on the National Law Students Workers' rights Conference on October 16 and 17 in Baltimore, visit the Peggy Browning Fund website. The registration deadline for students asking the Peggy Browning Fund to pay for airfare is August 27.

How Technology Impacts Civil Liberties: Town Hall Seattle, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14

Newly-emerging technologies affect us all in a multitude of ways and today’s turned-on, always-connected world has reached an all-time high. Nuala O’Connor, president of the Center for Democracy & Technology, will discuss how the internet and interconnected world shape our lives, impact our civil liberties, and inform our daily decisions. Other panelists include Ryan Calo, faculty director of the University of Washington’s Tech Policy Lab; Racquel Russell, Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs for Zillow; and Matt Wood, the General Manager of Product Strategy for Amazon Web Services. From the Internet of Things to the wireless technologies in automobiles, the panelists will explain the range of this digital world and what steps can be made to stay plugged in, while still maintaining personal privacy and security. The panel will be moderated by Jenny Durkan, former United States Attorney and Quinn Emanuel’s Global Chair of the Cyber Law and Privacy Group. Ira Rubinstein, CDT Board of Directors, Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor at NYU School of Law will be giving a special welcome to the program.

Students can view participating employers in Symplicity starting next Tuesday, July 7. Application submissions begin on Monday, July 13. Interviews will take place from the 10th to the 28th of August.

Saturday, August 1; 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 5, 2015; 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

To help students prepare for Fall OCI, practicing attorneys in a variety of fields will be on campus to do mock interviews and provide individual feedback. This is a great opportunity to network and practice your interview skills with attorneys in a non-competitive, no-stress atmosphere. Students will be paired with an alumni practitioner for a practice interview. Students will prepare for it as if he/she were interviewing for a real position with the practitioner's firm, organization, or governmental agency. The interview will last 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of feedback.

Export Controls Seminar

Seattle University, the U.S. Commercial Service, and the Department of Homeland Security have teamed up to present the 2015 Seattle Export Controls Conference at the Seattle University School of Law, July 29-30, 2015.  This fast-paced seminar is geared toward both new and experienced export control professionals, who will benefit from:

•                      Learning about major U.S. export control laws;

•                      Getting the latest updates on export control reform;

•                      Discussing recent legal updates and best practices in export compliance; and

•                      Discovering why these export controls are so important and how our nation’s adversaries attempt to violate them.

Starbucks Mentorship Program (Deadline June 12, 2015)

Starbucks Law and Corporate Affairs Diversity Committee will kick off its fifth annual Diversity Mentorship Program this June.  This program will pair in-house L&CA attorney mentors with newer, diverse attorneys practicing in our local communities. Professor Maggie Chon Speaking at King County Superior Court for Asian-Pacific American Month

The King County Superior Court will host a presentation by featured speaker, Prof. Maggie Chon, of the Seattle University School of Law, detailing her story about immigration and self-racial-identity, among other topics.  The presentation will be on June 4th from 12:15 PM to 1:30 PM at the presiding courtroom E-942 of the King County Superior Courthouse in Seattle.

Call for Authors: American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in its 2015 Warren E. Burger Prize. Authors should submit an original, unpublished, 10,000–20,000 word essay on a topic that addresses the issues of excellence in legal skills, civility, ethics, and professionalism. The winning essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review and the author will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The submission deadline for the 2015 Warren E. Burger Prize is July 1, 2015.
