As a lawyer, you are expected to speak with authority,
to influence, and to persuade. Yet much of your training and focus is
on written communication. Spend a day with gifted trainers and
coaches and learn techniques you can put to work immediately to improve
your verbal communications with the court as well as with your
colleagues, clients, and community.
Morning session: Speaking to
influence
Learn techniques that focus your audience to actively
listen to your most important points. Michael Shadow, Ph.D, an
internationally acknowledged trainer and coach in persuasive
communication and adjunct professor at the University of Washington
and Seattle University, brings together the most recent brain and
social psychology research in the fields of influence and attitude
change in this fascinating session.
Afternoon session: Speaking with
ease and awareness
Learn and practice three simple strategies to turn
stage fright and speaker’s anxiety into a receptive connection with
your audience. Communication trainer and consultant Connie Miller has coached attorneys
in litigation communication for over 35 years, and this session will
help both experienced speakers and novices become more confident in
their ability to think clearly and quickly on their feet.
What do you do if you have said something that has
been perceived as biased? Using hypotheticals drawn from legal
practice, WSBA Diversity and Public Service Program Manager Joy
Williams will teach four basic strategies for recovery using self and
community acknowledgment, affirmations, and openness.
