WA Attorney General's Office Veteran Law Clerk Position

The Washington State Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is seeking law students who are also veterans as defined by RCW 41.04.007 to apply to serve as a volunteer law clerk or legal extern for academic credit.

The selected candidate will serve the AGO’s Administrative Division in Seattle. Duties performed by the selected candidate will include, but are not limited to, researching and preparing memoranda on legal issues involving or faced by veterans and military families; researching and summarizing changes to federal and state laws offering protections and benefits to veterans and military families in order to update the AGO Military & Veteran Legal Resource Guide; in conjunction with policy staff, work to identify issues for consideration as part of the AG’s legislative agenda; attend and help coordinate internal meetings; participate in the AG’s outreach efforts to the veteran and military communities and meet with stakeholders; understand the consumer complaint process and assist in analyzing complaints for trends and possible enforcement actions; and work on possible subjects for veteran or military-related CLE subjects.

Qualifications:
  • Law student currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school (must maintain that status during the duration of the clerkship/externship)
  • Served in any branch of the Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves
  • Fulfilled his or her initial military service obligation OR, as a member of the armed forces reserves, national guard, or coast guard, and has been called into federal service by a presidential select reserve call up for at least one hundred eighty cumulative days
  • Received an honorable discharge or a discharge for medical reasons with an honorable record
  • The AGO seeks candidates who are committed to public service and who possess a diverse background with regard to their education, previous work experience, law school activities, extracurricular activities, community service, and areas of interest that enhance the AGO

Recruitment Process:
  • Applications of qualified candidates will be assessed and interviews will be conducted to identify the selected candidate
  • Any qualified candidate not selected can then participate in the AGO’s spring law clerk process for volunteer law clerks, the process for which will immediately follow this recruitment
