Learn About the Department of Justice Tax Division Honors Program & Summer Law Internship Program

The Department of Justice Tax Division invites students to join them for a virtual presentation on the DOJ’s Honors Program and Summer Law Internship Program positions.

They'll offer a few tips on applying, as well as a discussion of the Tax Division, which is one of the best-kept secrets in the Department. The Tax Division was the second highest ranked organization within the DOJ in the 2022 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government Rankings.

Tax courses or experience are NOT required! The Tax Division, primarily located in Washington, DC, represents the US in criminal and civil litigation around the country. Tax Division attorneys gain hands-on litigation opportunities and the Division strives to build a collegial working environment that reflects the diversity of America.

There will be three presentations in August, before the SLIP and Honors Program applications are due on September 5. All law students are welcome to attend any of them. The information for joining each is below.

ABA SECTION OF TAXATION PUBLIC SERVICE FELLOWSHIP

Are you a recent law school graduate or judicial clerk? Are you interested in tax law? Do you want to make a difference in your community? Can you make a two-year commitment to a non-profit organization?

THE ABA SECTION OF TAXATION
PUBLIC SERVICE FELLOWSHIP

APPLICATION DEADLINE OCTOBER 4, 2010
The American Bar Association Section of Taxation is pleased to announce that the application period for its Public Service Fellowship program for 2011 is now open. Applications must be received by October 4, 2010 to be considered. Applicants selected for interviews will be invited to attend the Section’s meeting in Boca Raton on January 20-22, 2011, and asked to participate in interviews on January 22, 2011.

• WHAT IS A PUBLIC SERVICE FELLOWSHIP?
The Section of Taxation developed the Public Service Fellowship program in 2008 as a way to underscore the Section’s commitment to advancing public service efforts in tax law, while providing young lawyers an opportunity to either represent low income taxpayers or work on public policy issues affecting low income taxpayers.

• WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?
Pro Bono work has been an integral part of the Section’s activities for many years. The Section has actively encouraged member participation in various Pro Bono efforts, held numerous training sessions to that end, and devoted much of its resources to providing legal services to those in need.

• WHERE WILL YOU WORK?

The proposed employment must involve taxation or administration of tax law and must be with a public-interest, non-profit section 501(c)(3) organization (the “Sponsoring Organization”). Each Fellow is expected to serve a two-year term with the Sponsoring Organization. The applicant must identify and secure a position with a Sponsoring Organization before applying for the Fellowship (although the position may be contingent upon award of the Fellowship).

• HOW DO YOU APPLY?

For more information about the Public Service Fellowship and to learn how to apply, please go to www.abanet.org/tax/awards/publicservice.
