Larry Schwerin Memorial Prize

Awarded annually to a second-year law student who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to working people, labor unions and justice in the workplace, the prize honors Larry Schwerin and his more than forty years as a union side labor and employment attorney. 

Larry is fondly remembered by his partners, colleagues, and friends for his outstanding advocacy as a trial and appellate attorney, as well as for his inimitable mix of humility and humor. An active member of the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee (now Union Lawyers Alliance) and the Washington Employment Lawyers Association, he was known for his generous mentorship of attorneys both locally and nationally. Raised on a wheat farm in Walla-Walla, Washington, he graduated from WSU and then UW School of Law where he served on law review. He began his career practicing labor law in 1968. He later formed the union-side firm Schwerin Burns Campbell & French in 1992, which he led for decades and is now Barnard Iglitzin & Lavitt. 

The Schwerin Memorial Prize is sponsored by his former partners and colleagues at Barnard Iglitzin & Lavitt who wish to honor his legacy and encourage law students to pursue a career dedicated to fighting for working people.

Second-year law students in the state of Washington interested in applying for the five thousand-dollar Schwerin Memorial Prize should submit a resume, writing sample, and detailed cover letter (1500-word limit) addressing how their work to-date reflects a commitment to supporting and advocating for economic and social justice for working people and how the Prize would further support such work.

Intellectual Property Law Scholarships

Three opportunities are available to Seattle University law students who have a strong, demonstrated interest in the field of intellectual property law:

Seed IP Law Group Founders Scholarship - recipients will be honored at Seed IP’s spring networking reception on April 10 (RSVP for the reception by April 3)

WSBA IP Section Scholarship - recipients will be honored at the WSBA IP Section’s IP Institute on April 24

Westin Scholar/IAPP Award - recipients will be announced in late June or early July

You can apply for all three scholarships with one application. Applications are due by Noon on March 14.

The Seed and WSBA scholarships seek to recognize students who have a demonstrable interest in the practice of intellectual property law (whether litigation or transactional work) in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark or trade secret protection, arts and entertainment, advertising law, and/or the intellectual property aspects of business.  The Westin Scholarship seeks to recognize future leaders in the field of privacy or data protection.  More information on the Westin Scholar Award can be found on the IAPP Higher Education page.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria for All Three Awards

To be eligible to apply for any of these scholarships, you must be currently enrolled as a law student at Seattle University School of Law.  The successful student will be selected based on their overall academic record, performance in course work related to intellectual property, and extracurricular activities, particularly those that relate to IP (such as the Intellectual Property Law Society).  Preference will be given to upper-level JD students.

All applications must include: (1) a cover letter explaining the applicant’s qualifications and merit (if applying to all three scholarships, please submit three cover letters), (2) the applicant’s resume, and (3) a copy of the applicant’s law school transcript that includes all grades through the Fall 2024 semester. 2022 Kate Seabright Scholarship

The Korean American Bar Association of Washington (KABA) is pleased and honored to announce it will be continuing the Kate Seabright Scholarship for a fourth consecutive year. This scholarship will provide $3,000-$8,000 to one or two law students attending law school in Washington State who demonstrate commitment to advocating for mental health awareness, promoting volunteerism, and increasing diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

This scholarship will be awarded in the memory and honor of Kate Seabright.  Funding for the scholarship is made possible through donations from Kate’s parents, Mike Seabright and Margaret Ahn Seabright, and her law firm, Fox Rothschild LLP.

Kate was a leader in the legal profession and in her law firm, dedicated to serving the Asian American legal community, and unwavering in her support of marginalized communities. Above all, Kate was an incredibly compassionate young woman, whose kindness and integrity will always be remembered.

This scholarship application is open to any law student in good standing at any of the three law schools in Washington State.

Selection Criteria

The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the Kate Seabright Scholarship Committee, which is composed of Kate’s parents, an attorney from Fox Rothschild LLP, and a board member from KABA.

●   Commitment to volunteerism, working towards diversity and inclusion efforts to improve the legal profession, and/or advocating for mental health awareness;

●   Commitment or interest in serving the Korean American or Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) legal community;

●   Professional goals and advancement in legal profession; and

●   Economic need

Award Recipient

The scholarship recipient(s) will receive an acceptance letter. KABA kindly requests the scholarship recipients provide their photo and prepare a short statement (approximately 500 words) detailing their continued commitment to volunteerism, diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, and/or mental health advocacy as a future attorney to be published on the KABA website (www.kaba-washington.org).

Washington State Society of Healthcare Attorneys Kristin Miles Memorial Student Scholarship

The Kristin Miles Memorial Student Scholarship honors Kristin’s commitment to ensuring that law students have the opportunity to participate in Washington State Society of Healthcare Attorneys (WSSHA) programs. She was ever vigilant in reminding the Board of its obligations to advance the education of future members by making programs accessible to the law student community. While Kristin’s passion, dedication, and always present good humor cannot be replaced, WSSHA seeks to honor her by providing this support to law students each year.

The scholarship provides:

• All seminar fees to the WSSHA Annual Hospital & Health Law Mid-Year Seminar, November 1-2, 2019 in Vancouver, B.C.
• One night lodging at the conference hotel, the Pan Pacific
• $50/per diem for a maximum of two days

Eligibility:

Any second- or third-year J.D. student, as well as any LL.M. student, enrolled in a law school located in the state of Washington, including previous applicants not selected who are encouraged to re-apply.
WSSHA will select one winner from each law school located in the state of Washington.

2020 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship

The 2020 Baker Donelson Diversity Scholarship application is now available.

$10,000 scholarships will be awarded to three diverse rising 2Ls for the summer of 2020. Recipients will also receive a a six-week, salaried 2L Summer Associate position in one of the firm’s offices.

Richard S. White Fellowship

Submissions for Helsell Fetterman's 2019 Richard S. White Fellowship are being accepted until July 11, 2018. This fellowship includes a paid, 12-week summer associate position and a $7,500 scholarship to be remitted directly to the student’s law school at the beginning of the school to assist in paying the student’s tuition.

To apply, you must be a rising 2L in good standing with an academic record, leadership abilities, and a commitment to personal and professional initiatives that indicate promise for a successful legal career. Candidates must also demonstrate interest in furthering diversity within the community and the profession and communicate a commitment to both the practice areas represented at Helsell Fetterman and to building a practice in the Seattle area.

South Asian Bar Association of Washington (SABAW) Scholarship and Grant Funding

SABAW Student Stipend

$1,000 awarded to a current law student based on a totality of factors, including: contribution to the South Asian community in Washington, need, academic excellence, and community involvement. All applications will require a resume, essay of no more than 300 words to show suitability to criteria, and any other materials the applicant deems relevant. Applications should be sent to M. Abbas Rizvi by June 30, 2018.

SABAW Public Interest Law Student Scholarship

A $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to a law student working on a discrete public interest law project or doing a summer/fall 2018 public interest law internship. Applicants must show either that they have contributed to the South Asian community, or that the project is connected to South Asia or the South Asian community. All applications will require a resume, essay of no more than 500 words to show suitability to criteria, and any other materials the applicant deems relevant. Applications/questions should be sent to scholarships@sabaw.org by June 30, 2018.

Minority Legal Fellowship Grant, sponsored by SABAW

The South Asian Bar Association of Washington has put forth a $4,000 grant to a law firm (“firm”) or non-profit organization (“organization”) interested in promoting and encouraging diversity in the legal profession. SABAW’s goal through this fellowship is to encourage firms and organizations to recruit, retain and advance minority attorneys who will contribute to the diversity of the firm or organization and the legal profession.

If the firm or organization fits the below criteria and is interested in participating in the Minority Legal Fellowship sponsored by SABAW, please answer the four below questions by email to mlf@sabaw.org by August 31, 2018.  SABAW will announce the recipient of the grant by September 7, 2018.

Fellowship Requirements:

• Fellowship awardee can be a law student, recent law graduate, or individual currently seeking employment or other forms of legal experience. 
• A representative from the firm or organization and the fellowship awardee must be willing to attend and be recognized at the South Asian Bar Association Annual Banquet scheduled for September 22, 2017. 
• The firm or organization and the Minority Legal Fellowship awardee will be profiled in the SABAW monthly newsletter and highlighted on its website.

Firm/Organization Criteria:

• The firm must have no more than five full time lawyers on staff.  This criterion does not apply to organizations.

 Questions:

1. How do you believe your firm's or organization's participation in the Minority Legal Fellowship program will benefit your work culture and the greater legal community?
2. In the Greater Seattle legal community, what do you believe to be the greatest hurdle for minorities entering the legal job market?

Stokes Lawrence 1L Diversity Scholarship

Stokes Lawrence is pleased to offer three $1,500 tuition scholarships to first year students from diverse backgrounds; one at each of the three law schools in the State of Washington.  The goal is to promote opportunities within the profession and to encourage a dialogue around the issue of diversity in the work place.

Criteria:  The Diversity Scholarships are open to all first-year law students of diverse backgrounds who demonstrate promise for a successful career in law and are committed to community involvement.

Application:  Applicants will submit a current resume and personal essay of no more than 1000 words with the following content: description of their thoughts on diversity and/or how diversity has played a role so far in their lives; description of their community involvement.

Outlaws Civil Rights Scholarship - Applications due by April 6, 2018

The Outlaws Civil Rights Scholarship provides support for a student actively committed to and engaged in public interest law that benefits the lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) community.

Eligible candidates include Seattle University School of Law incoming 1Ls and current 1Ls, 2Ls and part-time 3Ls.

Applicants should submit a resume along with a brief cover letter, explaining their work and future plans/interests.  Ideal candidates should have demonstrated track records and history of working on significant, topical issues that they plan to build on further throughout and after law school, once equipped with a law degree.  Special value will be given to work within diverse communities. 

A scholarship of $2,500 will be awarded as part of the recipient’s financial aid package for the 2018-19 academic year.  A student can receive the award more than once but must reapply each year.

Law Librarianship Scholarship - Applications due by April 6,  2018

The Law Librarianship Scholarship provides annual support for a Seattle University School of Law student who is interested in law librarianship.

Eligible candidates include current Seattle University School of Law 1Ls and 2Ls who already have an MLS degree, or who have expressed interest in pursuing an MLS degree after law school graduation. 

Applicants should submit a short statement (a paragraph; no more than a page), explaining their interest in law librarianship, and commit to 50-100 hours of a paid internship in the Seattle University School of Law library. 

The associate dean of students will make the final selection.  The scholarship, an award of $1,000, will be awarded as part of the recipient’s financial aid package for the 2018-19 academic year.  A student can receive the award more than once but must reapply each year.

Women's Law Caucus Scholarship

Seattle University’s Women’s Law Caucus is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a SU Law student who exemplifies the leadership qualities of the WLC’s core values. The WLC is dedicated to the support and development of women as active and successful members of the legal community. Through our support network of legal professionals and students, the WLC encourages students to interact with their current and future professional peers for both personal and professional development. The WLC originally created this scholarship to recognize the outstanding professional and personal accomplishments of Kellye Y. Testy, the first woman appointed as dean by the Seattle University School of Law. Dean Testy served as dean from 2004 to 2009.
Eligibility	Applicants must be full or part-time Seattle University School of Law students in good standing. “Good standing” refers to an applicant’s academic and disciplinary (if applicable) record. Applicants must also be a member of the Women’s Law Caucus.
Application Guidelines	The application deadline is Sunday, February 25, 2018 (5:00PM). All application materials must be submitted via email to Dean Deming at dcdeming@seattleu.edu. All committee members will keep application materials and applicant information confidential. A complete application must include: 1. Personal Statement The WLC’s core values are leadership and excellence in the advancement of women in the law. The personal statement should describe how you have demonstrated or plan to demonstrate one or both of these values in your academic career and/or through your work experience, as well as why you believe these values are important. 2. Selection Process	The scholarship committee shall be composed of five or six members including the Dean of Student Affairs, a law school faculty member, law school alumni, and WLC co-presidents. Committee members will evaluate the application materials to select a scholarship recipient.

The Washington State Bar Association Intellectual Property section offers an annual $2500 scholarship to a student who has a demonstrable interest in the practice of  intellectual property law (whether litigation or transactional work) in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark or trade secret protection, arts and entertainment, advertising law, and/or the intellectual property aspects of business.

SEED IP Law Group Founder Scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Seed IP Law Group Founders Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded each year to a Seattle University law student with a strong interest in the field of intellectual property law. Seed IP Law Group is one of the top-rated intellectual property law firms in the United States. The scholarship honors the firm’s founders, Dick Seed and Ben Berry, for their contribution to the law of intellectual property. As expressed by Bill Ferron of the Seed IP Law Group, “We think it’s very important to train the next generation of intellectual property attorneys so that we can continue to build on the legacy started by Ben Berry and Dick Seed. Only through strong support of higher education will our country continue to be a leader in the world.” The scholarship recipient receives $6,000.00.

• Currently enrolled as a law student at Seattle University School of Law
• Have an undergraduate degree that qualifies you to sit for the USPTO Patent Agent Exam
• Well-developed interest in intellectual property and active participation in IP activities such as the Intellectual Property Law Society
• Preference will be given to 2 and 3Ls and students with strong technical and/or scientific backgrounds

2017-2018 WSBA Construction Law Section Legal Writing Competition

The Construction Law Section of the Washington State Bar Association is pleased to announce its 2017-2018 legal writing competition for Washington law students.

ELIGIBILITY

1. 2L or 3L (in good standing as of October 15, 2017) at Seattle University School of Law, Gonzaga University School of Law, or University of Washington School of Law

Written submissions must address one of the two prompts below:

In 2015, the Appellate Court of Illinois in The Chicago Housing Authority v. Destefano and Partners, Ltd., 45 N.E. 3d 767, determined that indemnity, breach of contract and negligence claims against a design professional for damages arising out of violations of the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and Americans with Disability Act (ADA) were pre-empted and thus barred by federal law. Take a position on whether this decision is a correct statement of federal pre-emption against design professionals (or others involved in the construction industry) and how a court in Washington might respond to the questions raised in this case.

Or

Take a position on whether City of Seattle Ordinances No. 124690 and No. 125368, Chapter 20.37 Seattle Municipal Code, mandating hiring from historically disadvantaged zip codes, are a legal means of spending public money.

And must be:

• No more than 2,200 words
• Double-spaced
• Times New Roman, 12-point font
• Clear, concise, cogent, and interesting in substance and style
• The original work of the submitter, and shall not have been previously published
• The submitter may consult with law school faculty and librarians to aid in the preparation of the submission, but the legal assessment and writing must be that of the submitter
• Cover letters will not be accepted; identifying information shall only include the student’s name, prospective graduation date, mailing address, email address, and phone number

Helsell Fetterman's Richard S. White Fellowship

The 2018 Richard S. White Fellowship includes a paid, 12-week summer associate position and a $7,500 academic scholarship to be remitted directly to the student’s law school at the beginning of the school year following the summer clerkship to assist in paying the student’s tuition.

Candidates must be rising 2Ls (or rising 3Ls, if pursuing an LLM after graduation) in good standing;
possess an academic record, leadership abilities, and a commitment to personal and professional initiatives that indicate promise for a successful legal career; demonstrate an interest in furthering diversity within the community and profession; and communicate an interest and commitment to the practice areas represented at Helsell Fetterman and to building a practice in the Seattle area.
