The Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) is excited to share that the 1L Success in Law School Mentoring Program is currently accepting mentees for the 2023 program year. 

Are you a first-year law student from an underrepresented background? Don't miss this opportunity to receive personal mentorship from an attorney at a Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Member organization!

The 1L Success in Law School Mentoring Program is a comprehensive, no-fee initiative that helps talented students receive the guidance they need to maximize their potential, both during and after law school. Students are paired with a mentor at the top of the legal profession who takes an active, personal interest in the student's development and success.

Register now to join the thousands of participants who have been matched with an attorney-perhaps even a managing partner or general counsel-at an LCLD Member organization.

Pre-Register for the National LGBTQ+ Bar Spring Virtual Career Fair

The National LGBTQ+ Bar, sponsor of the Lavender Law® Conference and Career Fair held each summer, is launching a new program this spring! This entirely virtual career fair will host smaller firms, as well as local nonprofits and government agencies from medium markets around the country.

The anticipated date for the program is Saturday, March 11, 2023. It is geared toward students who are looking for smaller regional firms, an opportunity to practice in or close to their hometown or school, or a niche area of practice in a boutique firm setting.

All LGBTQ+ law students are invited to this event. Small employers from throughout the country will be recruited to participate; however, the outreach will focus on employers in the following cities: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charleston, Dallas, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix/Tempe, Portland (OR), Raleigh/Durham, Seattle, San Diego, and South Florida.  Most recruiting law firms at this virtual fair will have 50 or fewer attorneys.

Description: To advance the FCBA's mission of fostering meaningful diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, the FCBA Diversity Pipeline Committee created two groundbreaking programs - the Diversity Pipeline Program (DPP) and the TMT Law & Policy Certificate Program - to attract, develop, and support diverse, first year law students from historically underrepresented and disadvantaged groups in pursuing legal careers in TMT law and policy.  

In its first year, the DPP received 100 student applications from 28 law schools from across the country, facilitated 19 paid internships with DPP employer participants, comprised of law firms, companies, trade organizations and non-profit organizations, and held over 30 hours of substantive instructional sessions for students pursuing the TMT Law & Policy Certificate. Year 2 of these programs has been another great success. After receiving almost 120 applications and holding 60 interviews, the Pipeline Program was able to place 30 first year law students in summer internships with 27 different employers – a >50% increase from year one. This year FCBA intends to further raise the bar.

In this informational webinar, tech bar leaders and inaugural diversity pipeline program interns will share their perspectives on the first two years of the DPP and the importance of diversity in the law and legal opportunities in TMT.  FCBA DPP committee chairs will share details on the purpose, timeline, and application process for summer 2023 internships.

Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

ABA Litigation Section Judicial Intern Opportunity Program Applications Accepted Beginning November 1 The American Bar Association’s Litigation Section is a place where law students become engaged in the legal profession and where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are advanced. One example is the Section’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP). The program is a summer internship program open to all first- or second-year diverse law students. Selected students intern for six weeks or more during the summer with a participating state or federal judge. The program offers a $2,000 award to each selected student. Students can also elect law school credit or coordinate their award with their work/study financial aid. JIOP will begin accepting applications for all students on November 1. The deadline for applying is January 7, 2022. Last year, JIOP offered internships to 164 law students representing 73 different law schools in locations throughout the country. This year's goal is to place 160 students. Summer 2022 placements will include a new JIOP location in Salt Lake City, UT. Please review the program description and frequently asked questions. Stokes Lawrence 1L Diversity Scholarship

Stokes Lawrence is pleased to offer three $1,500 tuition scholarships to first year students from diverse backgrounds; one at each of the three law schools in the State of Washington.  The goal is to promote opportunities within the profession and to encourage a dialogue around the issue of diversity in the work place.

Criteria:  The Diversity Scholarships are open to all first-year law students of diverse backgrounds who demonstrate promise for a successful career in law and are committed to community involvement.

Application:  Applicants will submit a current resume and personal essay of no more than 1000 words with the following content: description of their thoughts on diversity and/or how diversity has played a role so far in their lives; description of their community involvement.

2014 Lavender Law® Conference & Career Fair

The Lavender Law Conference & Career Fair will take place on August 21, 2014 at Sheraton Time Square in New York. The Continuing Legal Education Conference will take place August 22-23.

 

Lavender Law is attended by 1,600 legal professionals every year. More than 450 law students are given the opportunity to speak with more than 150 recruiters at the career fair. The continuing legal education conference features more than 40 workshops discussing topics such as LGBT athletes, criminal justice/prisons and updates in transgender law.

 

Lavender Law recruiters come from across the country and represent law firms, Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. View a current list of recruiters.

This Lawyering in a Diverse World session is geared to give you practical tools for working with clients with mental health issues. Merf Ehman, staff attorney with Columbia Legal Services, will introduce interviewing and advocacy skills for effectively working with clients with mental health issues. And our own Kerri Kline, Seattle University Community Counseling graduate student, in collaboration with Dr. William O'Connell, Associate Professor in the Seattle University College of Education's Department of Counseling and School Psychology, will provide an overview of common mental health diagnoses within marginalized communities.
