Where the Jobs Are is the only comprehensive projection of hiring needs for critical occupations in the federal government. This edition is the third in an ongoing series produced by the Partnership for Public Service, covering fiscal years 2010 through 2012, and updating information in the 2005 and 2007 reports. Where the Jobs Are projects that there will be 23,596 hires in the federal government legal sector, with an additional 31, 276 in compliance and enforcement and 17,287 administration/ program management.

Business Law Section Oct. 22 Event Has a New Format

The Business Section of the WSBA has asked that the October 22 Speed Networking event be changed to a Panel and Reception event. The Section has asked several local business lawyers, representing a diverse range of practice types, to come to Seattle University Law School and discuss how to get into and develop a career in Business Law, and growing and emerging areas of practice for business lawyers. They regret any inconvenience this change may cause, but they are excited about working with the law school now and in the future on events involving students and practicing lawyers.

Practising Law Institute Presentation

If you are a student with an undergrad degree (or at least about two years of coursework) in engineering, computer sciences or the hard sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, some related fields), and are interested in becoming a Patent Agent or Attorney, Practising Law Institute (PLI) invites you to a presentation by Mark Dighton, PLI's Director of Law School Relations and a Director of their Patent Bar Review Course. Topics for discussion include:

• The latest info on the Patent Bar Exam

• Who can take it

• How it works, now that it's on computer

• When you should take it (you don't need to...and probably shouldn't...wait until you graduate)
  

• How and when the new Rules changes coming out of the Patent Office will impact the Exam
  

• Recommendations on when and how to study for this very difficult Exam

Presidential Management Fellows Program

Just a reminder - the Presidential Management Fellows Program application period runs from October 1st through October 15th.

If you are interested in public policy and policy management, you should consider this program. This competition results in a two year fellowship with a federal agency. Participants are recent graduates (class of 2010 and earlier are eligible) from a variety of academic disciplines, including Law. The application period is October 1-15, 2009. Applicants must be nominated by their school, so if you are interested please contact CPD as soon as possible to get the application and nomination process underway. Recent SU alumni have served as fellows; this is a great opportunity to expand your skills and gain entrée to federal employment. Please read the PMF website at: https://www.pmf.opm.gov.

Washington State Coalition for Language Access Summit V

Washington State Coalition for Language Access (WASCLA) Summit V, “Ensuring Language Access in the 21st Century; Striving for Excellence" will be held in Spokane, Washington, on October 16th and 17th, on the campus of Washington State University, Riverpoint. Summit V will provide an opportunity for conference attendees to participate in trainings and discussions on improving access to services for LEP individuals in a variety of settings and by employing a variety of strategies. Last year, over 200 individuals from across Washington State attended Summit IV. Please consider joining us this year as we expand our understanding of what it means to provide ‘meaningful access’ to services for LEP individuals.

School Attorneys CLE & Networking Opportunity

Just a reminder that on October 15 - 17, 2009, the National School Boards Association’s Council of School Attorneys will hold its annual School Law Practice Seminar at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle. They are offering a greatly reduced registration of $75.00 to law students who pre-register. K&L Gates Public Interest Fellowship Program

K&L Gates has announced the 2010 Public Interest Fellowship Program of the K&L Gates LLP Fund. The fellowship was established in September 1999 to offer law students the opportunity to assist public service organizations located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each summer, the program awards up to three successful candidates a fellowship that enables them to spend four weeks of their summer working at one of four designated public interest organizations. Get Involved with the US Public Service Academy

The US Public Service Academy was founded three years ago by Shawn Raymond and Chris Myers Asch – two alumns of Teach for America. Their goal is to advocate for the establishment of a bricks-and-mortar undergraduate institution which would be akin to the civilian version of West Point. Bipartisan legislation is pending in Congress, and the National Youth Council is mobilizing support for the Academy. Learn more about how to get involved here.

Civil Law Externship Information Session: All current law students are invited to attend an information session on civil law externships held on Thursday, September 24, 2009 from 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm on the 2nd Floor Gallery. This is an opportunity to hear from past externs, ask questions about externships, and to understand the process of applying, requirements, and so forth. Pizza will also be provided.
