WILLIAM L. DWYER INN OF COURT STUDENT MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS Current 2Ls are invited to apply for 2023-24 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. One of the Inn of Court’s functions is to serve as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to the pursuit of high-quality, ethical lawyering. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Applications for membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court are due Friday, April 7 at 12 pm. A resume and letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn should be addressed and emailed to Deans Deborah Ahrens and Erin Fullner. ABOUT THE INN The general Inn membership is made up of judges, professors, law firm partners, prosecutors, defenders, and other lawyers with varying levels of practice experience. The Inn meets on the Seattle U campus the second Tuesday night of each of the nine months of the school year for dinner, networking, and a continuing legal education (CLE) presentation. Students are expected to attend all of the Tuesday evening meetings and are each assigned to one of seven sub-groups, called pupilages. Students work with the judges and lawyers in their pupilages to develop and help lead CLEs (each pupilage presents one CLE for the year). SELECTION CRITERIA This is a competitive process. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students who will be 3Ls during the 2023-24 academic year. Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter. MEMBERSHIP DUES Student dues for 2023-24 will be covered by the Office of the Dean.

Transportation Security Administration Chief Counsel Office

The Transportation Security Administration is seeking to hire multiple entry-level and experienced attorneys at its headquarters in Springfield, VA (within the National Capital Region) and a number of offices nationwide. TSA Chief Counsel Office is hiring for the following practice groups: Labor & Employment Litigation; Employment, Civil Rights, Labor Policy and Ethics; and Field Operations. 

Depending on experience level, selectees will be hired starting at the General Schedule (GS)-11 equivalent pay band up through the GS-15 equivalent level. The position has promotion potential to the GS-15 level. DHS offers generous employment benefits, to include a flexible telework schedule.

Litigation: Selectees will have the unique opportunity for hands-on litigation from the start, and will first-chair their own cases from discovery to trial before administrative tribunals such as the Merit Systems Protection Board and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as before labor arbitrators. Positions are located in San Francisco, CA, Atlanta, GA, Detroit, MI, Dallas, TX, Philadelphia, PA, and at TSA Headquarters in Springfield, VA. Employment, Civil Rights, Labor Policy and Ethics: Selectees will have the opportunity to advise on legal matters of a national scope, with open positions in the ethics and labor & employment practice areas at TSA Headquarters in Springfield, VA.

For labor & employment, TSA is embarking on a new chapter with regard to compensation and collective bargaining. Selectees will participate in policy development, strategic planning, labor negotiations, and advise on a wide variety of labor and employment issues. TSA seeks to fill these positions as quickly as possible and is considering applicants on a rolling basis. Rural Practice: Small Towns, Big Opportunities Virtual Hiring Event – March 31

2023 JOB SEEKER INSTRUCTIONS

Law student and attorney job seekers may now begin registering for the 2023 Rural Practice Virtual Hiring Event. This event takes place on Friday, March 31, 2023, and is open to all law students and attorneys interested in legal jobs in small towns and rural areas of Washington State. The event is hosted by Gonzaga University School of Law, in partnership with the WSBA Small Town & Rural Practice Committee, Seattle University School of Law, and University of Washington School of Law.

There is no cost to register. Monday, March 13 is the deadline for job seekers to register and Wednesday, March 15 at noon is the application deadline. 

Registration is a two-step process and must be completed in order. 

Step 1: Register via Microsoft Forms here. 

If you are a current student, you must register with your official law school email address (@lawschool.gonzaga.edu, @uw.edu, @seattleu.edu, etc.)  

Step 2: Apply for Jobs (by noon on March 15).

If you are not a Gonzaga Law student, your registration from Step 1 will also serve as an application for a ZagLAW account. Within 2 business days of completing your registration, Gonzaga Law will confirm your information and send you an email with your log in information. If you do not receive this email within 2 business days, please email lawcareers@gonzaga.edu.

Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health Law

On February 8, from 12:30-1:30 pm eastern time, the Occupational Safety and Health Division of the Office of the Solicitor in the U.S. Department of Labor is holding a virtual presentation for current law students who may be interested in the office's work. 

Speakers will provide an overview of the types work the office does, including appellate, enforcement, and regulatory work, and the kinds of careers available to attorneys interested in occupational safety and health. They will also discuss some specific examples of projects the office has worked on and hope to give current students an idea of what the day to day work of being an attorney for the federal government looks like.

The presentation will be on Teams, and participants do not need the app to participate, they can join from their browsers. There will be time at the end for questions.

Pre-Register for the National LGBTQ+ Bar Spring Virtual Career Fair

The National LGBTQ+ Bar, sponsor of the Lavender Law® Conference and Career Fair held each summer, is launching a new program this spring! This entirely virtual career fair will host smaller firms, as well as local nonprofits and government agencies from medium markets around the country.

The anticipated date for the program is Saturday, March 11, 2023. It is geared toward students who are looking for smaller regional firms, an opportunity to practice in or close to their hometown or school, or a niche area of practice in a boutique firm setting.

All LGBTQ+ law students are invited to this event. Small employers from throughout the country will be recruited to participate; however, the outreach will focus on employers in the following cities: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charleston, Dallas, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix/Tempe, Portland (OR), Raleigh/Durham, Seattle, San Diego, and South Florida.  Most recruiting law firms at this virtual fair will have 50 or fewer attorneys.

Spill the Tea: Conversations on the Inner Workings of Athletic Compliance

Please join the Membership and Awards Committee of the National Association for Athletic Compliance (NAAC) as we provide a peek into the inner workings of compliance. Graduate and law students with an interest in pursuing a career in compliance are encouraged to attend this free virtual event, which will provide them with an opportunity to hear from and engage with a diverse group of compliance administrators. MODERATE MEANS PRACTICUM

A few spots remain for the Moderate Means Practicum, a 3-credit experiential course that meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 2:30 to 3:45 pm. Register today: Moderate Means Practicum, LPRC-425-A.

Your learning will apply to real clients’ cases while you build your issue-spotting and legal analysis skills.

The Moderate Means Practicum provides the opportunity to build your client interviewing skills; explore family, consumer, or housing law; and help moderate income clients access low-cost legal services.

 This experiential course will specifically allow you to:

·       Learn about the legal issues that low and moderate income clients most often encounter;

·       Conduct client interviews via telephone;

·       Perform legal analysis of interesting cases;

·       Work with attorneys throughout the state to provide representation.

2023-24 Alaska Judicial Clerkships

CLERKSHIPS IN ALASKA District and Superior Court judges in Alaska are still accepting clerkship applications for the 2023-24 terms. These are excellent positions and for folks who fall in love with Alaska and wish to stay after clerking, plenty of job opportunities await. For those who wish to return home, the experience translates very well.   APPLYING TO DISTRICT COURT The Anchorage District Court has limited civil and criminal jurisdiction. The 10 judges of the Anchorage District Court share two law clerks.   To apply for positions with the Anchorage District Court, applicants must submit: a cover letter, resume, a copy of all law school transcripts, a brief writing sample which was not substantially edited by someone else, two or three letters of recommendation from law professors or employers, and a completed background check authorization form.   The entire package should be sent to:   Deputy Presiding Judge Anchorage District Court 820 W. 4th Avenue Anchorage, AK 99501   Applicants for Anchorage District Court clerkships should submit a single application packet to the Deputy Presiding Judge. It is not necessary to send an application to each judge on the court.   APPLYING TO SUPERIOR COURTS The Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction, which also has appellate jurisdiction over the District Court appeals. There are 44 Superior Court judgeships throughout Alaska. Each superior court judge may employ one law clerk.   To apply for positions in the Superior Court, applicants must submit: a cover letter, resume, a copy of all law school transcripts, a brief writing sample which was not substantially edited by someone else, two or three letters of recommendation from law professors or employers, and a completed background check authorization form.   To apply for clerkships in the Superior Court of the First Judicial District, send the completed package to the Area Court Administrator. Send applications directly to the judge at each court location.   To apply for clerkships in the Superior Court of the Third Judicial District, the applicant may do either of the following:   1. Send the completed package to one or more specific judges directly. A list of judges and their addresses is listed in the court directory.   2. Send the completed package to the Area Court Administrator. Please indicate in your cover letter the communities in which you are interested in working.
