WSBA Volunteer Opportunities

The Washington State Bar Association is now recruiting volunteers to help advance the legal profession in two different ways:

Committee service
We will soon fill openings on 22 committees, boards and panels ranging from the Judicial Recommendation Committee to the Disciplinary Board. Most positions have two- or three-year terms, start on Oct. 1, and are open only to active WSBA members. There are exceptions, though, so please take a look at the application in myWSBA to determine your eligibility and learn more about these opportunities. Committee service gives you a chance to contribute to the legal community and to get involved with issues you care about. It’s also a great way to connect with other lawyers around the state. The application deadline is Feb. 27, 2015. Promoting professionalism
If you are interested in volunteering in a more task-specific way, consider participating in our new professionalism volunteer initiative. Opportunities include making professionalism presentations to law students, writing about professionalism for the WSBA’s magazine, NWLawyer and the blog, NWSidebar, leading professionalism discussions at bar association events, recognizing professionalism in the legal community, and reviewing the Creed of Professionalism. Find more information here. Both WSBA members and others in the legal community are welcome to apply. The application deadline is March 31, 2015.

Clerkship Kickoff Meeting

If you're interested in a post-graduate judicial clerkship, be sure to attend one of the mandatory clerkship information sessions on March 5.

• March 5 at noon in room 309
• March 5 at 5:00 p.m. in room 327

State appellate and federal clerkships generally require applications a year or more in advance, so if you'd like to clerk in the fall of 2016, be sure to attend one of these meetings and plan to send applications this spring and summer. Most candidates will want to start applying as 2Ls.

State superior courts generally do not hire as far in advance, so 3L year is a good time to apply for those positions.

CPD runs a judicial clerkship program to help you create competitive application materials. In order to participate in the program, you must attend the kickoff meeting, where the judicial clerkship handbook will be distributed. If you have a class, externship, or work conflict, please contact Erin Fullner, we may be able to schedule a make-up session for those unable to attend one of the sessions.

Spring OCI

From Tuesday, March 10 through Friday, March 13, CPD will host a Spring On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Session, which will feature more than a dozen small and mid-size firms such as Christensen O'Connor Johnson Kindness, Pfau Cochran, Ahlers & Cressman, and Schlemlein Goetz Fick & Scruggs. There are spring and summer law clerk positions available as well as a few post-graduate opportunities. Deadline to apply is Monday, March 2.   

In addition to interviews, CPD will host an informal networking event on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:00 pm on the 2nd Floor Gallery open to all students, participating Spring OCI employers, and other small and mid-size firms. The networking event will provide students with a great opportunity to connect with attorneys. Student registration will begin on February 19. Stay tuned for more information.

Spring OCI Info Session

CPD will host a Spring On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Information Session on Thursday, February 19 at 12:00 pm in Room C1. This session will provide information about the upcoming OCI program and how to apply for summer law clerk and post-graduate opportunities. There are small and mid-size firm positions available, so please review the OCI information on Symplicity, which will be open for student viewing on February 19.  

CPD Mock Interview Program

We still have available time slots in both sessions!

Please RSVP to reserve a spot for the upcoming Mock Interview Program, where you will be paired with an alumni practitioner for a practice interview to help you get ready for Spring OCI, other upcoming interviews, and to develop your interviewing skills. The program will take place on Saturday, February 28 from 10 am to 1 pm, and Wednesday, March 4 from 5 pm to 8 pm. Please send your RSVP to Junsen Ohno.

JAG Listserv

If you're interested in learning more about JAG opportunities, please contact Erin Fullner to be included in CPD's JAG listserv so you can be kept apprised of JAG-related events.

We regularly invite JAGs to campus for presentations and interviewing and there are also opportunities for field trips to open houses and public military court proceedings.

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson to Visit the Law School

Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson will be on campus to discuss the AG's Office and the work it does to protect consumers from fraud, prosecute crime, and protect the environment, and he will also discuss their summer program. Job Search Strategy Seminar for Recent Grads

NW Public Service Career Fair - Time is Running Out!

The NW Public Service Career Fair deadline is fast-approaching!  The Fair will be held on campus in LeRoux (located in the Student Center) on Friday, February 6.  Don’t miss this opportunity to apply for  summer opportunities for 1L and 2L students and engage in table talk with 25 public interest employers including the King and Pierce County Prosecutor’s offices, the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, the Department of Labor, Northwest Justice Project, and many more!  The deadline to submit applications to employers is Monday, January 19. 

To submit applications, you must register for the Fair and pay a $15 fee.  Once registered, you will receive an email notification from Lewis and Clark Law School with instructions to sign up for the Fair’s TWEN page.  All applications must be submitted via TWEN.  To register and see a complete list of participating employers, visit the website.  CPD is available to review your application materials, but do not delay, get your resume and cover letters to a counselor today! 

Washington State Association of Justice (WSAJ) NETWORKING EVENT

Thursday, February 5 on 2^nd Floor Gallery at 5 pm

1L Diversity Summer Associate Program

Kenyon and Kenyon is pleased to announce its IL Diversity Program for the Summer of 2015. This position is a paid summer associate position in our Palo Alto, California office. This position would also include participation in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) 1L Scholars Program which includes mentoring throughout the year as well as participation in the LCLD Summit in Dallas, TX, in May 2015.

Puget Sound Area Minority Fellowship Program for 1Ls

The Puget Sound Area Minority Fellowship Program (PSAMFP) is designed to provide summer associate opportunities to diverse first-year law students. Students who are chosen to participate as Fellows in this highly competitive program will be placed as first-year summer associates with one of the program’s participating employers including Carney Badley Spellman, Gordon Thomas Honeywell, and T-Mobile. Representatives from the Puget Sound Area Minority Fellowship Program will be on campus to discuss the program history, application details and deadlines, as well as to answer questions from interested students. Cocktail Reception in Hawaii: First and Second Year Law Students

7 small and mid-size law firms in Honolulu are hosting a cocktail reception.

This reception is not a job fair, and it is not intended to replace on-campus interviews or resume collection. However, unlike large firms, they find it challenging to annually conduct on-campus interviews at any campus because of their geographic location and the cost involved.

They would like to meet with students to encourage them to look into small and mid-size law firms as attractive alternatives to the large firms, and invite any 1L and 2L students to attend their cocktail reception if any students are there on the islands on December 29th!

ONLINE Information Session - Law Librarianship

At the Catholic University of America, they've found that after completing their J.D., some graduates of Law programs decide to explore Law Librarianship as an alternative to the practice of law. They regularly enroll such students into their highly-ranked Master's program in the Department of Library and Information Science. The students have found that the combination of a J.D. and a Master's in Library and Information Science offers challenging and rewarding opportunities.

Finding a Public Interest Job

CPD's seminar will introduce you to the rewarding world of public interest work! We will provide information and resources for finding positions in public criminal law, direct client services, law reform/policy and public interest law firms. We will also discuss opportunities for the coming summer and post-graduation as well as tips for drafting compelling applications, tailoring cover letters, and building a network within the public interest community. In addition, we will talk about how you can fund your own public interest opportunities through scholarships, fellowships and grants.
