Coast Guard Legal Internship

Navy JAG

Air Force JAG Fall Externship

The Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps is seeking applications for their 2016 fall unpaid internship/externship program at participating Air Force installations across the country. The Air Force JAG Corps provides full-spectrum legal advice to military commanders. As an intern or extern, you will gain hands-on experience in diverse areas of legal practice while learning more about the Air Force and the JAG Corps. The program is an excellent way to gain exposure to substantive legal work while serving alongside active duty Air Force Judge Advocates. Positions are available for full-time or part-time work for 16 weeks during the 2016 fall semester.

Interns/externs work under attorney supervision in numerous practice areas of the JAG Corps including:

• Preparing criminal and civil cases by conducting legal research, writing briefs and opinions, conducting investigations and interviewing witnesses
• Assisting attorneys who counsel and represent Airmen, their family members and retirees in personal legal matters in areas such as family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant law, tax, bankruptcy, immigration and naturalization law, and military administrative law
• Supporting attorneys in other areas, such as federal tort claims, government procurement law, employment law, international law, environmental law and operational law

Interns/externs must be able to work part-time (16+hrs) or full-time for up to 40 hours a week for 16 weeks and must pay for their travel to and from the job location and be able to secure housing. No housing allowance will be provided.

United States Marine Corps Judge Advocate

A Marine Corps Judge Advocate will visit Seattle University to conduct informational interviews with interested candidates the week of February 1. Please contact Erin Fullner to request an informational interview. This opportunity is open to students as well as alumni.

As a Marine Corps Judge Advocate you will immediately be given the responsibilities of maintaining your own caseload and advising Marines on legal issues. Additionally, the training you receive as a Marine Corps Officer will prepare you to be a leader. You will also build skills and gain real legal experience in the courtroom. Air Force JAG National Security Writing Competition

This year's Air Force JAG National Security Writing Competition topic is Public-Private Partnerships & Technology in the Air Force. The competition is open to graduates of ABA-accredited U.S. law schools. Original, previously unpublished papers are eligible for submission (papers prepared for law school credit are eligible provided they are original work). Jointly authored papers are not eligible.

The submission deadline is April 15, 2016. For information about this competition, please contact CPD.

2015 Air Force Summer Legal Internship

Coast Guard JAG Opportunities

The Coast Guard has a continuing need for attorneys. To help meet this need, qualified 3Ls and alumni are encouraged to apply for Direct Commission Lawyer (DCL) positions for 2015.

 

Selected DCLs are commissioned as Lieutenants and sign a four-year active duty contract with the Coast Guard. DCLs will attend a five-week Direct Commission Officer Courst at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, followed by a two-week Operations Orientation and ten-week Basic Lawyer Course at the Naval Justice Schol in Newport, RI. Judge advocates will then be assigned based on the needs of the service.

Army JAG Live Chat

Marine Corps Judge Advocate Informational Lunch Presentation and Interviews

Capt. Preston Selleck, US Marine Corps Judge Advocate, will visit the law school on Thursday, May 2nd. During his visit he will host an informational lunch for students who would like to learn more about being a Judge Advocate. He will also be available for one-on-one informational interviews.

Capt. Selleck's first duty station was Camp Pendleton, CA where he served as defense counsel, primarily representing clients within 1st Marine Division.  During his time as defense counsel he was detailed to more than 125 cases.
 

Capt. Selleck was then Battalion Judge Advocate to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) Battalion.  He served with 1st LAR in support of their mission during Operation Enduring Freedom from August, 2011 until June, 2012.  1st LAR operated in the Reg-E Khan Neshin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. As the Battalion Judge Advocate, Capt. Selleck was the general legal advisor to the Commanding Officer of 1st LAR.  Capt. Selleck’s duties included operational advice and planning, managing detainee operations, oversight of fiscal operations, investigations, and the occasional, though rare, combat patrol.  1st LAR’s tour in Afghanistan spanned from October, 2011 to May, 2012.
 

After returning to the US, Capt. Selleck was transferred to the Office of Military Commissions in Washington, D.C.  He was assigned as defense counsel and is currently serving as support counsel in the case of United States of America v. Mr. Abd Al Rahim Hussayn Muhammad Al-Nashiri, the alleged mastermind of the October 12, 2000 USS Cole bombing.
