Student Inn of Court Membership

Current 2Ls are invited to apply for 2020-21 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. One of the Inn of Court’s functions is to serve as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to the pursuit of high-quality, ethical lawyering.

ABOUT THE INN

The general Inn membership is made up of judges, professors, law firm partners, prosecutors, defenders, and other lawyers with varying levels of practice experience. The Inn meets on the Seattle U campus the second Tuesday night of each of the nine months of the school year for dinner, networking, and a continuing legal education (CLE) presentation. Students are each assigned to one of seven sub-groups, called pupilages. Students work with the judges and lawyers in their pupilages to develop and help lead CLEs (each pupilage presents one CLE for the year).

SELECTION CRITERIA

This is a competitive process. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students who will be 3Ls during the 2020-21 academic year. Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter.

Applications for membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court are due Monday, April 20 by 5 pm. A resume and letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn should be addressed and emailed to:

Free Financial Wellness CLE

King County Bar Association in collaboration with The Society for Financial Awareness will present a free CLE on March 25: Financial Wellness - Social Security Explained.

This free 1 credit CLE is available in person at the King County Bar Association, 1200 Fifth Avenue, Suite 700 in Seattle or via webcast. Register online.

Distinguished Faculty

Tyler Lively, CFP®, is a native of Washington state, having grown up in Redmond. He has always had a passion for learning and finding the optimal solution to any goal. This drive pushed him to graduate from the prestigious Marriott School of Business (rated one of the top 10 entrepreneurship programs in the U.S.).

After college, Tyler led a self-employment development program mentoring and teaching representatives in Haiti, Ecuador, Zimbabwe, and the Dominican Republic on lessons in entrepreneurship principles. Soon after, Tyler had the opportunity to support our nation's military and work for the Department of Defense in a finance position overseeing several multi-million dollar contracts. While Tyler enjoyed his time with the DOD, he had a strong desire to return to Washington state to be near family.

Following his return he became an Associate Financial Planner with a retirement planning firm, and in early 2017, he was promoted to Planner and subsequently earned his Certified Financial Planner® designation. He serves on an Investment Committee board and has earned a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation through the College of Financial Planning. Tyler is motivated by the ability to work with clients and help them achieve their financial goals.

Longshore Act Workers' Compensation Case in Action

COME FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO OBSERVE WORKERS' COMPENSATION HEARING AT THE LAW SCHOOL

On Monday, October 21, Judge Evan Nordby of the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Administrative Law Judges, will hear a Longshore Act workers' compensation case in the Law School's Moot Courtroom. Judge Nordby will call the hearing to order at 9:00 a.m.

The Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act is a federal law that provides for the payment of compensation, medical care, and vocational rehabilitation services to employees disabled from on-the-job injuries that occur on the navigable waters of the United States, or in adjoining areas customarily used in the loading, unloading, repairing, or building of a vessel.  These benefits are paid by a private insurance company on the employer's behalf, or by the employer if it is self-insured.

Longshore Act hearings are public, adversarial hearings tried to a judge alone, and are governed by relaxed rules of evidence. They typically feature both lay witness testimony, and, expert testimony by medical and vocational experts. Both sides are typically represented by experienced counsel. This is an opportunity to see experienced attorneys give opening arguments and conduct direct and cross examination.

From 12 pm - 1 pm, the hearing will recess for lunch, and Judge Nordby - a former adjunct professor at the Law School and an attorney with the USDOL Solicitor's Office - will host a sack lunch Q&A covering working as a federal agency litigator, labor and administrative law, the OALJ, the Mariners, and any related topics.

Washington State Society of Healthcare Attorneys Kristin Miles Memorial Student Scholarship

The Kristin Miles Memorial Student Scholarship honors Kristin’s commitment to ensuring that law students have the opportunity to participate in Washington State Society of Healthcare Attorneys (WSSHA) programs. She was ever vigilant in reminding the Board of its obligations to advance the education of future members by making programs accessible to the law student community. While Kristin’s passion, dedication, and always present good humor cannot be replaced, WSSHA seeks to honor her by providing this support to law students each year.

The scholarship provides:

• All seminar fees to the WSSHA Annual Hospital & Health Law Mid-Year Seminar, November 1-2, 2019 in Vancouver, B.C.
• One night lodging at the conference hotel, the Pan Pacific
• $50/per diem for a maximum of two days

Eligibility:

Any second- or third-year J.D. student, as well as any LL.M. student, enrolled in a law school located in the state of Washington, including previous applicants not selected who are encouraged to re-apply.
WSSHA will select one winner from each law school located in the state of Washington.

It is about that time to start registering for a Mock Interview time slot. We encourage you to schedule an interview time in order to practice and polish your interview style with a Seattle U Law alumni. Here, you will also get the chance to learn how to refine your strategies for OCI and future interviews!

Mock interviews will take place:

• Saturday, July 20 from 10 am to 12:30 pm
• Wednesday, July 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm

What you should know:

• You will be paired with a practitioner for the half-hour sessions.
• 20 minutes of interviewing
• 10 minutes of feedback
• When possible, we will match you with a practitioner in your area of interest.
• Time slots are first come, first served and space is limited.
