ABA Litigation Section Judicial Intern Opportunity Program Applications Accepted November 4

The American Bar Association Litigation Section is a place where law students become engaged in the legal profession and where diversity, equity, and inclusion are advanced. One example is through the Section’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP). JIOP is a summer internship program open to all first- and second-year underrepresented law students.

Selected students intern for six weeks or more during the summer with a participating state or federal judge. The program makes available a $2,000 award to each selected student. Students can also elect law school credit.

JIOP will begin accepting Summer 2025 applications for all students on November 4, 2024. The deadline for applying is January 6, 2025. Last year, JIOP offered internships to 171 law students representing 68 different law schools in locations throughout the country. The goal this year is to place 160 students for Summer 2025.

Students are encouraged to apply early. Screening interviews are guaranteed for the first 500 applicants. Other students will be screened on an as-needed basis. Last year’s program had more than 770 applications.

Moderate Means Program Summer Internship

MODERATE MEANS PROGRAM

A few spots remain for the Moderate Means Program this summer. To volunteer, please send an email of interest and your resume to Clay Wilson at wilsoncl@seattleu.edu. The program will accept the first 15 students to apply with a final deadline of April 22.

The Moderate Means Program provides the opportunity to build your issue-spotting and client interviewing skills; explore family, consumer, housing and unemployment benefit law; and help moderate income clients access low-cost legal services.

 This experiential program will specifically allow you to:

·         Learn about the legal issues that low and moderate income clients most often encounter;

·         Conduct client interviews via telephone;

·         Perform legal analysis of interesting cases;

·         Work with attorneys throughout the state to provide representation.

A 3L recently said, “This experience has been the most engaging experience in law school yet, and has given me more confidence in client interaction and my ability to research any civil law topic that comes up.”

Each year, over 2,000 volunteer legal interns serve in Justice components and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices throughout the country. Legal interns work on challenging and meaningful issues in various practice areas that impact the US.

Air Force JAG Fall Externship

The Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps is seeking applications for their 2016 fall unpaid internship/externship program at participating Air Force installations across the country. The Air Force JAG Corps provides full-spectrum legal advice to military commanders. As an intern or extern, you will gain hands-on experience in diverse areas of legal practice while learning more about the Air Force and the JAG Corps. The program is an excellent way to gain exposure to substantive legal work while serving alongside active duty Air Force Judge Advocates. Positions are available for full-time or part-time work for 16 weeks during the 2016 fall semester.

Interns/externs work under attorney supervision in numerous practice areas of the JAG Corps including:

• Preparing criminal and civil cases by conducting legal research, writing briefs and opinions, conducting investigations and interviewing witnesses
• Assisting attorneys who counsel and represent Airmen, their family members and retirees in personal legal matters in areas such as family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant law, tax, bankruptcy, immigration and naturalization law, and military administrative law
• Supporting attorneys in other areas, such as federal tort claims, government procurement law, employment law, international law, environmental law and operational law

Interns/externs must be able to work part-time (16+hrs) or full-time for up to 40 hours a week for 16 weeks and must pay for their travel to and from the job location and be able to secure housing. No housing allowance will be provided.

VABAW Summer Judicial Externship

The Vietnamese AmericanBar Association of Washington (VABAW) is sponsoring a summer judicial externship.  VABAW recognizes that a judicial externship will greatly enrich and broaden a law student’s legal education and experience.  To that end, VABAW is piloting this externship.  The 2015 externship will provide two law students with the opportunity to work at the King County Superior Court for a minimum of six weeks.  This is a unique opportunity be immersed in the local judicial process and gain first hand courtroom experience. VABAW provides a $500 stipend to each externship recipient. Additional details and an application can be found on Symplicity.

2015 Air Force Summer Legal Internship
