Learn About Tax LLM Programs and Tax/Estate Planning Practice

The Tax and Estate Planning Focus Areas are pleased to invite you to an information session about pursuing a masters degree (LL.M.) in tax law after graduating from law school. 

• The session will be held on Wednesday, October 14, at noon in Room 109 

Professors Diane Lourdes Dick, John Eason (chair of the Estate Planning Focus Area), Lily Kahng (chair of the Tax Focus Area), and Jeff Liang will be on hand to talk about their practice experiences and to address questions such as, When do I need to apply to LLM programs? Where should I apply and what are my chances of being admitted? Will a tax LLM improve my employment prospects? If so, how? What JD classes do I need to take to prepare for the LLM program? Snacks will be served.

Making the Right Moves: Annual Professional Development Conference for Military Spouse Attorneys

Making the Right Moves is the Military Spouse JD Network's annual career development conference created for the specific needs of military spouse attorneys. This year’s event will discuss leveraging technology, alternative career paths, building a mindset for grit and growth, and other topics aimed at equipping military spouses in the legal field to lead and succeed. Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies

All Major League baseball players, through the Major League Baseball Players Trust, honor the life of former MLBPA Executive Director, Michael Weiner, through the "Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies."   This scholarship seeks to recognize and support the efforts of graduate and/or law students dedicated to improving the lives of workers, by awarding up to five $10,000 scholarships annually. For those who don't know, Michael spent 25 years, nearly his entire professional career, with the MLBPA working in support of the Players - past, present and future.  Despite being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in August of 2012, Michael waged an inspiring battle against his disease as he continued to work on behalf of the Players right up to the time of his passing in November of 2013, at the age of 51. To be eligible for an award, individuals must be graduate or law students enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the United States or Canada and must have a demonstrated interest in, and wish to make a career out of, working in the labor movement and on behalf of workers' rights. To receive an award, eligible candidates must meet a combination of criteria identified below: A superior academic record Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement A strong recommendation from an academic or a labor/workers' rights practitioner Excellent written and oral communication skills Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) scores or otherwise. Scholarship applications are being accepted through  Monday, November 2, 2015. Each student selected as a Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies recipient will receive a $10,000 scholarship. The Honorable Matthew W. Williams is currently assigned to the South Division Maleng Regional Justice Center where he hears mainline criminal matters.  He is the Chair of the King County District Court (KCDC) Technology Committee and has served as a member of the Rules and Education Committees of the Washington State District & Municipal Court Judges Association since 2011.  He leads the KCDC intensive pro-tem judicial training program.  Judge Williams has taught trial practice at Seattle University/University of Puget Sound School of Law since 1991.  He serves as the Director of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) Northwest Regional Deposition program. He has served many terms as faculty team leader at Emory Law School's renowned Kessler-Eidson Trial Techniques Program. He has trained over 3,000 attorneys, judges, and prosecutors across the U.S.   Judge Williams holds a BS in Economics from the University of Nebraska (1980), and a JD from the University of Nebraska, School of Law (1983).

Panelists include:  Judy Jennison, an IP Litigation Partner with Perkins Coie with more than 20 years of experience litigating for and counseling clients on intellectual property and unfair competition issues; Tessa Gorman, the Chief of the Criminal Division for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington; Nichole Abbotts, an SU-alum and commercial attorney at Microsoft who provides legal support for Microsoft’s Worldwide Sales Group; and SU-alum Leslie Boyd, who practiced commercial litigation and bankruptcy at Cairncross & Hempelmann, then went in house to Intellectual Ventures, where she focused on patent acquisitions, divestures, and licensing, and currently works at Microsoft, supporting its commercial hosting and cloud licensing programs.

One of the most important things you can do for your professional development while in law school is surround yourself with terrific mentors…let the law school help you!  We have many outstanding mentors waiting for you.  All you need to do is sign up.

What is it:  The law school’s mentorship program connects 3Ls/4Ls with mentors from the legal community and faculty/adjunct faculty members.  This exciting program is now in its THIRD year and has proved to be a valuable resource to many students.  The program combines a structured mentorship process, specific strategies, and key resources to promote a successful mentorship relationship.

The goal:  Provide you with the professional tools you need to enter the employment market, prepare you for the practical realities of the workplace, and develop healthy professional relationships. 

The details:    Sign up and you will be paired with a mentor.  The program kicks off in September with an Orientation/Reception (date TBD) and ends in April.  Your participation in monthly meetings will be required over eight months (eight meetings total) beginning in September.  You and your mentor will receive a structured mentorship guide that will have a variety of great topics and resources for review before your monthly meetings.  The time you can give to each monthly meeting can be determined by you and your mentor.  We don’t expect this time commitment to exceed two hours per month, unless you and your mentor agree to meet more often.  Meetings can be in person, over the phone, via Skype – whatever is most convenient for both of you.

How Technology Impacts Civil Liberties: Town Hall Seattle, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 14

Newly-emerging technologies affect us all in a multitude of ways and today’s turned-on, always-connected world has reached an all-time high. Nuala O’Connor, president of the Center for Democracy & Technology, will discuss how the internet and interconnected world shape our lives, impact our civil liberties, and inform our daily decisions. Other panelists include Ryan Calo, faculty director of the University of Washington’s Tech Policy Lab; Racquel Russell, Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs for Zillow; and Matt Wood, the General Manager of Product Strategy for Amazon Web Services. From the Internet of Things to the wireless technologies in automobiles, the panelists will explain the range of this digital world and what steps can be made to stay plugged in, while still maintaining personal privacy and security. The panel will be moderated by Jenny Durkan, former United States Attorney and Quinn Emanuel’s Global Chair of the Cyber Law and Privacy Group. Ira Rubinstein, CDT Board of Directors, Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor at NYU School of Law will be giving a special welcome to the program.

To help students prepare for Fall OCI, practicing attorneys in a variety of fields will be on campus to do mock interviews and provide individual feedback. This is a great opportunity to network and practice your interview skills with attorneys in a non-competitive, no-stress atmosphere. Students will be paired with an alumni practitioner for a practice interview. Students will prepare for it as if he/she were interviewing for a real position with the practitioner's firm, organization, or governmental agency. The interview will last 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of feedback.

Starbucks Mentorship Program (Deadline June 12, 2015)

Starbucks Law and Corporate Affairs Diversity Committee will kick off its fifth annual Diversity Mentorship Program this June.  This program will pair in-house L&CA attorney mentors with newer, diverse attorneys practicing in our local communities. Professor Maggie Chon Speaking at King County Superior Court for Asian-Pacific American Month

Call for Authors: American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in its 2015 Warren E. Burger Prize. Authors should submit an original, unpublished, 10,000–20,000 word essay on a topic that addresses the issues of excellence in legal skills, civility, ethics, and professionalism. The winning essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review and the author will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The submission deadline for the 2015 Warren E. Burger Prize is July 1, 2015. Equal Justice Works Fellowships

Equal Justice Works is launching a nationwide competition to find seven passionate immigration attorneys to begin two-year, post-graduate Fellowships in September 2015!

Each Fellow will work with a prominent non-profit organization selected by Equal Justice Works in one of six cities - Denver, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Oakland, Sacramento, and San Francisco - to provide high-quality, high volume legal services to immigrants in the host organization’s community seeking relief under the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs. Services may include but are not limited to:

• conducting outreach to underserved populations to locate individuals eligible for DAPA or DACA relief;
• providing direct legal representation to assist with DAPA and DACA applications;
• creating and conducting culturally competent “know your rights” sessions;
• training and managing pro bono attorneys to expand DAPA and DACA services;
• preparing written brochures and/or manuals on DAPA and DACA issues for widespread distribution; and
• collaborating with other legal and non-legal service providers in the community to share information and run trainings.

The Equal Justice Works Fellowship Program provides financial and other forms of support to lawyers serving vulnerable individuals and communities throughout the United States. The two-year Fellowships offer salary (at least $41,000 annually), fringe benefits, generous loan repayment assistance, a national training and leadership development program, and other support services during the term of the Fellowship.

General Information about the Application Process

Candidates may submit applications here on our website from April 17 through June 1. Completed applications require a resume, personal statement, references, and two letters of recommendation.

Fellows will be placed at a host organization with expertise in immigration law chosen by Equal Justice Works. Candidates may request to be considered for multiple cities. Top-scoring candidates will interview with the host organization, but final selection of the Fellows will be made by an anonymous sponsor. Interviews will be conducted nationwide throughout June, and offers will be extended on a rolling basis beginning in July. Fellows will start work in September 2015.

To be considered, a candidate must be a qualified and dedicated graduate of an Equal Justice Works member school committed to working with immigrant populations. Individual candidates will be judged based on immigration law experience (in general and DACA/DAPA in particular); language skills; personal connection to the issues and to the locale; and strength of recommendations.

Presentation by Pierce County Prosecutor

Are you interested in a career in public criminal law? Don't miss this great opportunity to hear from Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist and Chief of Staff Dawn Farina on Wednesday, April 22  at noon in Room C5, as they discuss a day-in-the-life of a prosecutor, Pierce County's specialized trial teams, and available positions for Summer 2016. Mr. Lindquist and Ms. Farina each have more than 20 years of experience as prosecutors and have tried nearly every type of criminal case! Lunch will be provided. Student Applications Are Now Being Accepted for Inn of Court

Current 2L students are encouraged to apply for 2015-2016 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. Materials required are a resume and a letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students and applications will be reviewed by Professor Deborah Ahrens and Erin Fullner, Associate Director of the Center for Professional Development. 

Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter. The membership commitment consists of nine evening (5:30-8:00 pm) monthly meetings held the second Tuesday of each month September through May at Seattle University. The membership dues for 2015-2016 are $100, which will cover the cost of all the meals.

Applications for the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court are due Monday, April 13 by 4:30 p.m. Application materials can be submitted in person to Jessica Fuqua in the Dean’s Office or electronically at fuquaj@seattleu.edu.

Inn of Court serves as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to perpetuating high-quality, ethical lawyering. The general membership is made up of judges, attorneys with varying practice experience, and law students in their third year. The William L. Dwyer Inn of Court is part of the American Inns of Court, a national organization which is comprised of around 320 chapters and over 23,000 members.
