Bristow Fellowship

The U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Solicitor General is now accepting applications for the Bristow Fellowship. The Fellowship consists of a 12 to 14 month appointment beginning in August or September of 2011.

Bristow Fellows work closely with the other lawyers in the Office of the Solicitor General. They help draft briefs in the opposition to petitions for certiorari filed in the Supreme Court of the United States and prepare recommendations to the Solicitor General regarding the Authorization of government appeals in the lower courts. The fellows also assist in the preparation of petitions and briefs in Supreme Court cases, work on special projects, and help the Solicitor General and other lawyers in the office prepare for oral argument before the Supreme Court.

Complete and signed applications will be date and time stamped and processed in the order they are received. Do not submit an incomplete application-- if the application is denied because it is incomplete, the Department of Education will send a letter explaining the reason it was denied, and a resubmitted request will receive a new date and time stamp.

The Civil Legal Assistance Attorney Student Loan Repayment Program (CLAAP) repays a portion of eligible federal student loan debt for civil legal assistance attorneys who are employed full-time. Attorneys are advised to understand the program requirements, and to carefully consider the Ineligibility for Double Benefits provision before determining whether or not to apply for CLAAP.

Minnesota Minority Recruitment Conference

The Minnesota Minority Recruitment Conference aims to increase legal diversity in the Twin Cities area by joining the largest legal employers in the Minneapolis/St.Paul with top quality 2L and 3L candidates from around the country. Employers participating in the interviews will include small, medium and large firms; corporate law departments; and public interest/non-profit/government entities.

OCI Now Live on Symplicity

The OCI information is now available for student viewing on Symplicity. Simply log in and click on the "OCI" tab to review a list of employers participating this year. The list is divided up by session. You can choose which session to view (Session 1, Session 2, or Session 3) by selecting from the drop-down menu in the Search box. To see more information about a particular employer, as well as their hiring criteria, click "Review."

Bidding (or the application period) will not begin until August 2nd. Instructions for the bidding process will be sent out before then. Additional employers will be added throughout the summer, so please keep checking back.

Job Shadow Program

There is an exciting opportunity this summer for those looking to connect with a practicing attorney in an area of law that interests them! The King County WA Women Lawyers (KCWWL) is launching a Job Shadow Program where law students are paired with an attorney for a half-day this summer to shadow the practitioner’s work. Students may tour a law office, observe the lawyer in practice or watch a court hearing, arbitration, deposition or trial. Students are encouraged to ask the volunteer attorneys questions about the law, practice and work/life balance.

WWL and non-WWL members in their 2L, 3L and 4L years with a serious interest are welcome to participate. Please email Jennifer Jones at jonesj12@seattleu.edu no later than June 9th with 1) your year in school, 2) area(s) of practice that interest you and 3) dates that you are not available this summer.

New loan repayment program for attorneys in civil legal aid

A new loan repayment assistance program for civil legal aid attorneys is going to become available soon. The Civil Legal Assistance Attorney Student Loan Repayment Program (CLAAP) will repay a portion of eligible federal student loan debt for civil legal assistance attorneys who are employed full-time. The attorneys will need to remain employed for three years or pay the assistance back. An attorney may be awarded up to $6,000 in repayment assistance in 2010 (actually received in 2011), and may be prioritized to receive assistance in future years if Congress continues to fund the program. An attorney may receive a lifetime maximum of $40,000 in assistance. For more information, click here.

APPLICATION DEADLINE OCTOBER 4, 2010 The American Bar Association Section of Taxation is pleased to announce that the application period for its Public Service Fellowship program for 2011 is now open. Applications must be received by October 4, 2010 to be considered. Applicants selected for interviews will be invited to attend the Section’s meeting in Boca Raton on January 20-22, 2011, and asked to participate in interviews on January 22, 2011.

• WHAT IS A PUBLIC SERVICE FELLOWSHIP?
The Section of Taxation developed the Public Service Fellowship program in 2008 as a way to underscore the Section’s commitment to advancing public service efforts in tax law, while providing young lawyers an opportunity to either represent low income taxpayers or work on public policy issues affecting low income taxpayers.

• WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?
Pro Bono work has been an integral part of the Section’s activities for many years. The Section has actively encouraged member participation in various Pro Bono efforts, held numerous training sessions to that end, and devoted much of its resources to providing legal services to those in need.

• WHERE WILL YOU WORK?
The proposed employment must involve taxation or administration of tax law and must be with a public-interest, non-profit section 501(c)(3) organization (the “Sponsoring Organization”). Each Fellow is expected to serve a two-year term with the Sponsoring Organization. The applicant must identify and secure a position with a Sponsoring Organization before applying for the Fellowship (although the position may be contingent upon award of the Fellowship).
