Employers Are Invited to Sign up for the NW Public Service Career Fair

The NW Consortium of Law Schools invites you to register for the 2025 NW Public Service Career Fair. This fair will be virtual on Friday, January 31 and in-person on the Lewis & Clark undergrad campus in Portland, OR on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Employer registration is now open and participation is free. Employer registration closes December 18, 2024 at 11:59 pm, but don’t delay! Please see important registration instructions detailed below.

Important Registration Instructions

When completing the registration for NWPSCF interviews, please note that interviews need to be 20 minutes and we will provide one (1) 15-minute break halfway through the afternoon. The total # of interviews in one day cannot exceed 12 interviews.

Resume Collection: We are also happy to collect application materials for you through a resume collection process and you can schedule interviews on your own timeline - preferably outside of our interview dates set out above. ***If you would like to use the resume collection option, please select Sunday, January 19 as the “interview date” when you register (this is an arbitrary system-required placeholder and all materials will be released on the same date).***

We welcome postings for students at any level as well as entry level attorney positions for our recent grads (i.e. rising 2L & 3L clerks, externs or interns, more experienced certified law students, post-grad clerks or attorneys, and both short-term and long-term opportunities.)

Recruitment Process Deadlines:

Employer Registration Opens – October 28

Student App Period Opens – November 20

Employer Registration Closes – December 18

Student App Period Closes – January 9

Applications to Employers for Selection – January 13

Employer Selections Deadline – January 21

Student Accept/Decline – January 23

Interview Schedules Released – January 27

Why should you attend the NWPSCF?

Your organization can join the fair even if you are not actively hiring. Each morning of the fair, we open the floor for “Table Talks” - a chance for students to "hop" from Zoom room to Zoom room or physical table to table in one large ballroom - and learn about the importance of your organization and/or future opportunities.

If you are hiring, we can arrange interviews for you at the fair or organize a resume collection. The NWPSCF offers two convenient ways to hire for summer, fall, spring, or postgraduate positions. By posting your job through the fair, your opportunity can be viewed by students from across the region. If you would like to interview at the fair, we can schedule up to 12 students per day, each day of the fair. If you prefer to interview on your own schedule, we can collect student applications for you and provide them to your organization.

With a virtual day, you can join from anywhere. The past few years of virtual fairs proved we are able to welcome more employers than ever from across the country. Our Consortium students are open to opportunities anywhere - across the country or around the world; if you cannot join us in person, then we invite you to join us virtually.

The Northwest Consortium of Law Schools brings together ten law schools in the Northwestern and Rocky Mountain states that work together to enhance public service, employment, and professional opportunities for their students. The Consortium schools have worked together for three decades creating the annual NW Public Service Career Fair to introduce public service-minded law students to employers working to advance concepts of justice, fairness, and the well-being of the general public. The NWPSCF traditionally brings nonprofit employers, civil legal aid organizations, and government offices together with hundreds of law students.

The ten participating Consortium law schools are: Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, Gonzaga University, Lewis & Clark, Seattle University, University of Idaho, University of Oregon, University of Utah, University of Washington, and Willamette University.

Spring OCI Open for Student Applications

SPRING ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWING (OCI)

STUDENT APPLICATION PERIOD NOW OPEN!

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Tuesday, February 20 @ Noon

Find this year’s opportunities under the OCI tab in Symplicity

What is Spring OCI?

Spring OCI is an annual hiring program open to 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, and LLM students. Many employers use Spring OCI to hire for Summer 2024 positions for 1L and 2L students. Other employers have posted potential school year and post-grad positions for 3Ls and LLMs. 26 employers are currently participating in the program and employer registration is still open. Make sure to routinely check for any new employers joining.

How Do I Apply?

Students apply to Spring OCI positions through Symplicity. Log in and access the 2024 Spring OCI opportunities through the OCI tab; you will be able to view the opportunities specific to your class level. Once you identify opportunities you are interested in, you will apply to each opportunity individually. You will upload your application materials to Symplicity and then can submit them to each specific opportunity.

What is the Spring OCI Timeline?

The student application period is now open and will close on Tuesday, February 20 @ noon. After the deadline closes, employers will receive application materials for review. Students will be alerted of interview offers on Wednesday, February 28 and will have until Noon on Thursday, February 29 to sign up for an interview. Interviews (either in-person at school or virtually) will be held March 5 – 7.  *Note: if an employer is marked as ‘Resume Collect’ that means they will interview according to their own timeline and will directly contact selected students themselves.

Your Application Materials Matter!

The materials you submit to an employer serve as your first impression. Make sure it’s a good one! Work with a CPD counselor on your materials and start by reviewing CPD’s Preparing Materials page and aligning your materials with our suggestions and guidance.

CPD Document Review Policy Reminder

Our goal is to review and return your documents with comments and suggestions as quickly as possible. During peak OCI (like now) we receive significantly more requests and may require up to 5 business days to provide feedback. Be sure to plan ahead and allow ample time to receive and implement our feedback before a deadline.

How Do I Download My Transcript?

Some employers will request that you submit your law school transcript as part of your application materials.  Unless otherwise specified, an “Unofficial Transcript” is appropriate. Follow the simple steps below to properly download your transcript:

  1. Go to My Seattle U and sign in
  2. Click “Academics”
  3. Scroll down and click “Unofficial Transcript”, then click on “Law Transcript”
  4. This creates a pdf text page of your transcript that you can download and save to submit as your transcript for applications

Tech Bar Diversity Pipeline Program

FCBA Diversity Pipeline Program Info Session

Event: Informational session for employers, first-year law students, and law school administrators

Date/Time: Monday, October 24, 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. ET

Location: Zoom

Topic: Creating Opportunities in Tech, Media and Telecom: Highlights of the Diversity Pipeline Program & Overview of the Year 3 Kickoff for the Summer of 2023

Description: To advance the FCBA's mission of fostering meaningful diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, the FCBA Diversity Pipeline Committee created two groundbreaking programs - the Diversity Pipeline Program (DPP) and the TMT Law & Policy Certificate Program - to attract, develop, and support diverse, first year law students from historically underrepresented and disadvantaged groups in pursuing legal careers in TMT law and policy.

In its first year, the DPP received 100 student applications from 28 law schools from across the country, facilitated 19 paid internships with DPP employer participants, comprised of law firms, companies, trade organizations and non-profit organizations, and held over 30 hours of substantive instructional sessions for students pursuing the TMT Law & Policy Certificate. Year 2 of these programs has been another great success. After receiving almost 120 applications and holding 60 interviews, the Pipeline Program was able to place 30 first year law students in summer internships with 27 different employers – a >50% increase from year one. This year FCBA intends to further raise the bar.

In this informational webinar, tech bar leaders and inaugural diversity pipeline program interns will share their perspectives on the first two years of the DPP and the importance of diversity in the law and legal opportunities in TMT.  FCBA DPP committee chairs will share details on the purpose, timeline, and application process for summer 2023 internships.

Attendees are encouraged to read this seminal piece by FCBA member Lisa Fowlkes.

Make a Great First Impression on the Job

Now that you’ve landed an exciting internship, externship, or volunteer opportunity for the summer, it’s important that you lead with your best foot.

Before you even arrive for your first day, make sure you brush up on the firm or organization. You did plenty of research before your interviews with the employer so revisit that mindset and make sure you’ve learned what you could about your workplace.

Arrive on time, which really means, arrive ten minutes early. To ensure this, make sure you map out your driving or bus route and scout out parking or calculate bus stop walk times. Be generous when allowing time for your commute. Give yourself extra travel time that first day and then find a restaurant or coffee shop nearby where you can sit or relax for a moment if you arrive more than ten minutes ahead of your start time.

If you’re not sure what to wear, always remember that given the choice between under or overdressing, overdressing wins. Though your colleagues may not wear suits every day, you need to wear a suit on your first day of work. Be quite conservative in your dress that whole first week. As time goes on, if you notice that others in your office wear separates or dress more casually on days when they’re not in court, for example, it’s appropriate to follow their lead, BUT as the new employee, you should dress more conservatively than the norm. You want your work, rather than your outfit, to gain notice.

Listen actively. Since you won’t yet know where office supplies are found in your new work space, bring a notepad and pen with you so that you can jot down instructions. It’s a good idea to ask questions, but you don’t want to ask the same question twice, so listen carefully and take notes.

Bring a friend named Charlie Hustle to work with you. Everyone loves a hard worker; volunteer for projects, help out others without being asked, and never hesitate to take on extra work. Even though summer is a time when you recharge from school, it’s important that personal plans not interfere with your commitment at work. If you’re asked to go above and beyond – go. Better yet, don’t wait to be asked.

Be yourself. Your summer job is a great opportunity to get to know attorneys well and begin building your network. Never miss out on an opportunity to get to know someone you work alongside; your supervisors and co-workers may one day be your greatest advocates.

Have fun! And reach out to us, whether you need to talk about stresses or successes, we’d love to hear from you throughout the summer.
