IPLS Speed Networking March 23, 5:30-7:30

The Intellectual Property Law Society is hosting its annual speed networking event on Wednesday, March 23 from 5:30-7:30 on the second floor of Sullivan Hall. 2016 Washington Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (WACC) Diversity Scholarship

The Washington Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (WACC) is proud to sponsor three diversity scholarships totaling $9,000 (up to $3,000 per scholarship). One student from each of the three Washington State law schools will be eligible to receive a scholarship.

The Association of Corporate Counsel is a global bar association that promotes the common professional and business interests of in-house counsel who work for corporations, associations, and other private-sector organizations. The WACC connects local members and provides valuable resources through information, education, networking opportunities, and advocacy initiatives. With approximately 600 members statewide, the WACC Board of Directors is comprised of committees focused on the particular interests of its members, including pro bono work, CLEs geared towards in-house issues, fostering relationships with the law schools, and promoting diversity efforts via this scholarship.

The WACC Diversity Scholarship provides financial assistance to law students who promote diversity in the legal profession in Washington State. The scholarship provides incentives to increase diversity in the legal profession; reflects the diverse communities in which we live; and ultimately benefits the community at-large.

To be a scholarship recipient you must be a student who (i) is currently enrolled in one of the Washington State law schools, (ii) is a student in good academic standing, (iii) has a demonstrated financial need, and (iv) exhibits a commitment to increasing diversity in the legal profession or community at-large.

Completed application forms are due by March 20, 2016. Please contact an advisor in the Center for Professional Development for an application form.

Racial Justice Leadership Institute

The Access to Justice Institute, Dean’s Office, and Student Bar Association invite you to apply for the Racial Justice Leadership Institute (RJLI).  

RJLI is a professional development opportunity that is being offered to SU law students in line with our commitment to the University mission.  RJLI is designed to foster leadership skills for working in all areas of the profession in ways that resist systems of privilege and oppression.  Participants can expect to gain:

• Common tools and language for addressing discomfort, tension, confusion, and other dynamics that emerge in classrooms and workplaces
• Strategies for identifying, naming, and responding to difficult situations related to identity, privilege, and oppression
• Deeper connections with peers, including a sense of solidarity and trust with other RJLI participants
• Shared analysis about the structural and interpersonal operations of racial privilege and oppression
• Skills for cultivating personal wellness as a strategy for personal and professional sustainability

This program is comprised of one day-long session and two follow-up evening sessions this spring semester.  The sessions will take place on the Seattle University campus.  The RJLI session dates are:

Session 1 – Saturday, February 6th (9 am to 5 pm)

Session 2 – Thursday, March 3rd (6 pm to 9 pm)

Session 3 – Thursday, April 7th (6 pm to 9 pm)

Graduate Student Council (GSC) Academic and At-Large Representatives for 2015-16

The Seattle University Graduate Student Council (GSC) is looking for two academic representatives from the School of Law and at-large representatives (at-large positions have included: parent-student, international, veterans, access & ability, doctoral, and multicultural representatives) for the 2015-16 school year.  This is a great opportunity to network with other graduate students and get connected into the larger picture of what is happening at Seattle U.
 GSC's mission is to improve the graduate student experience at Seattle U by communicating the needs and ideas of the graduate student body to the University. The GSC advocates for services that better meet the needs of students in all seven colleges of the university.

Academic and at-large representatives serve as a direct connection between their academic school/college (academic representatives) or a specific graduate student population (at-large representatives) and the GSC, accurately conveying the needs of the student population. Representatives are expected to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with their school/college Dean’s office, faculty, and graduate student organizations. They will attend monthly GSC “All-Council” meetings and GSC events; attend retreats, in-service workshops, and council development activities; serve as liaison between the GSC and a specific graduate student population; serve and actively participate on GSC Committees, as needed; and represent the council to student, University administration, faculty, and other constituencies. These positions require a time commitment of approximately 5 hours per month and periodic availability during business hours.

Air Force JAG National Security Writing Competition

This year's Air Force JAG National Security Writing Competition topic is Public-Private Partnerships & Technology in the Air Force. The competition is open to graduates of ABA-accredited U.S. law schools. Original, previously unpublished papers are eligible for submission (papers prepared for law school credit are eligible provided they are original work). Jointly authored papers are not eligible.

The submission deadline is April 15, 2016. For information about this competition, please contact CPD.

New Lawyers: Improve Your Trial Performance, Save the Date for TAP 2015

Improve your performance in the fundamental stages of trial and train and practice with support from judges and litigation experts when the results don't count!

The annual WSBA Trial Advocacy Program offers a two-day trial-skills training from seasoned trial lawyers followed two weeks later by a one-day mock trial. This seminar is designed for attorneys working in the criminal or civil arena with little to no trial experience but a strong desire to become effective trial lawyers. Past participants commented that the seminar was "completely engaging and thought-provoking" and "entertaining, real-world skill development that every new lawyer should attend."

Recommendations Regarding Alternative Dispute Resolution

In April 2011 the Washington State Bar Association Board of Governors chartered a Task Force on the Escalating Costs of Civil Litigation to:  1) Assess the current cost of civil litigation in Washington State Courts and make recommendations on controlling those costs; and 2) survey neighboring and similarly situated states to compare the cost of litigation in Washington. 

In celebration of ABA Mediation Week (Oct. 11-17), join us for a panel discussion with members of the ECCL Task Force to learn about their upcoming report and the recommendations regarding the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution to reduce the escalating cost of litigation.

1L Resume Workshops Begin October 15

A successful job search begins with a strong resume, so be sure to sign up in TWEN for a 1L resume workshop. Legal resumes are different from other resumes, so even if you love your current version, it's time to revamp it.

Each workshop will be led by a CPD counselor and will consist of a small group of students. Time slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  If none of the available times fit with your schedule, please email Junsen Ohno so we can find an alternative.

You can register on TWEN beginning Tuesday, October 13 at 9:00 am. If you're already registered for TWEN, you should immediately be directed to the workshop sign-up page.  If you'e not immediately directed to the sign-up page, select “Add a Course” and find “1L Resume/Cover Letter Workshop” among the list of courses available for Fall 2015. CPD has emailed all 1Ls with sign-up information and a materials packet. Use the materials provided in the packet to complete your first resume draft and bring it, along with your laptop or tablet, to the workshop.

This  workshop is your first opportunity to work directly with CPD and is required before you'll be able to schedule a one-on-one with CPD staff; we can't wait to meet all of you and begin helping you uncover your career path!

The American College of Trial Lawyers is seeking applications for its 2016 Emil Gumpert Award, an annual honor with a $100,000 prize which is awarded to an outstanding program that is designed to improve the administration of justice.  The award is named in honor of the founder of the College, Emil Gumpert. The Washington Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC Washington) is pleased to announce the launch of its Ambassador Program for Washington state law students!

ACC Washington Ambassadors that are selected to participate will volunteer at ACC Washington's various events during the year, providing the students with a unique networking and educational opportunity.  With access to ACC Washington's in-house counsel membership and its law firm sponsors, students are able to build relationships and attend seminars on current legal issues.

Learn About Tax LLM Programs and Tax/Estate Planning Practice

The Tax and Estate Planning Focus Areas are pleased to invite you to an information session about pursuing a masters degree (LL.M.) in tax law after graduating from law school.

Where should I apply and what are my chances of being admitted? Will a tax LLM improve my employment prospects? If so, how? What JD classes do I need to take to prepare for the LLM program? Making the Right Moves: Annual Professional Development Conference for Military Spouse Attorneys

Making the Right Moves is the Military Spouse JD Network's annual career development conference created for the specific needs of military spouse attorneys. This year’s event will discuss leveraging technology, alternative career paths, building a mindset for grit and growth, and other topics aimed at equipping military spouses in the legal field to lead and succeed. Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies

All Major League baseball players, through the Major League Baseball Players Trust, honor the life of former MLBPA Executive Director, Michael Weiner, through the "Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies."   This scholarship seeks to recognize and support the efforts of graduate and/or law students dedicated to improving the lives of workers, by awarding up to five $10,000 scholarships annually. For those who don't know, Michael spent 25 years, nearly his entire professional career, with the MLBPA working in support of the Players - past, present and future.  Despite being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in August of 2012, Michael waged an inspiring battle against his disease as he continued to work on behalf of the Players right up to the time of his passing in November of 2013, at the age of 51. To be eligible for an award, individuals must be graduate or law students enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the United States or Canada and must have a demonstrated interest in, and wish to make a career out of, working in the labor movement and on behalf of workers' rights. To receive an award, eligible candidates must meet a combination of criteria identified below: A superior academic record Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement A strong recommendation from an academic or a labor/workers' rights practitioner Excellent written and oral communication skills Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) scores or otherwise. Scholarship applications are being accepted through  Monday, November 2, 2015. Each student selected as a Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies recipient will receive a $10,000 scholarship. The Honorable Matthew W. Williams is currently assigned to the South Division Maleng Regional Justice Center where he hears mainline criminal matters.  He is the Chair of the King County District Court (KCDC) Technology Committee and has served as a member of the Rules and Education Committees of the Washington State District & Municipal Court Judges Association since 2011.  He leads the KCDC intensive pro-tem judicial training program.  Judge Williams has taught trial practice at Seattle University/University of Puget Sound School of Law since 1991.  He serves as the Director of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) Northwest Regional Deposition program. He has served many terms as faculty team leader at Emory Law School's renowned Kessler-Eidson Trial Techniques Program. He has trained over 3,000 attorneys, judges, and prosecutors across the U.S.   Judge Williams holds a BS in Economics from the University of Nebraska (1980), and a JD from the University of Nebraska, School of Law (1983).

Panelists include:  Judy Jennison, an IP Litigation Partner with Perkins Coie with more than 20 years of experience litigating for and counseling clients on intellectual property and unfair competition issues; Tessa Gorman, the Chief of the Criminal Division for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington; Nichole Abbotts, an SU-alum and commercial attorney at Microsoft who provides legal support for Microsoft’s Worldwide Sales Group; and SU-alum Leslie Boyd, who practiced commercial litigation and bankruptcy at Cairncross & Hempelmann, then went in house to Intellectual Ventures, where she focused on patent acquisitions, divestures, and licensing, and currently works at Microsoft, supporting its commercial hosting and cloud licensing programs.

These highly successful attorneys will discuss their personal career trajectories and respective leadership paths, as well as topics including the major issues facing women in the legal profession, flexibility in career planning, selecting and transitioning between practice areas, how to create a network while in law school, and the importance of mentors.
