If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If a lawyer has top notch legal skills, a comfortable office, a stellar case management system, but no one knows about the lawyer or her firm, does she have a viable law practice?  Building a successful law practice requires developing a brand, building and implementing marketing strategies, which includes identifying your market, honing your elevator speech, networking, and participating in the community you serve.  Join us for a hands-on training with Madhu Singh who will share best practices of building a successful practice through a variety of marketing strategies. You will leave with a marketing plan in hand with ideas to get you going right away.

Madhu Singh is the Chief Legal Office of the Foundry Law Group. Since starting her solo practice, MK Singh Law, in 2009, Madhu has worked to pioneer a nontraditional approach to legal support that emphasizes efficiency, agility and hands-on collaboration. Today, as the founder and Chief Legal Officer of Foundry Law Group, Madhu fosters a unique innovative work environment that empowers both the team and their clients’ teams to achieve their fullest potential. She is in her element working side by side with CEOs and businesses crafting legal solutions that fit the needs, vision and values of today’s growing companies. She is particularly interested in the emerging intersections of technology, new media and business law and enjoys helping companies navigate the front lines of these fast-developing areas. Madhu is Adjunct Faculty Lead at the Community Development and Entrepreneurship Clinic at Seattle University School of Business and School of Law and on the Board of Director of the Women’s Business Exchange. She received the SBA 2014 Women business owner of the year award, been named a rising star each of the last three years by Superlawyers, and awarded "Superb business attorney" by Avvo.com. Seeking to make a positive impact in our community, Madhu also spends her time speaking at CLEs for attorneys, advising at micro-enterprise clinics, providing pro bono services for nonprofits, serving on nonprofit boards and hosting free seminars for local businesses.

The 2016 CLE Connections Series, which is open to law students and attorneys, aims to offer high quality CLEs designed to help you run a successful law practice and opportunities to connect with other lawyer-entrepreneurs, especially those serving the moderate income client community.

Inn of Court Student Membership Applications

Current 2Ls are encouraged to apply for 2016-2017 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. The Inn of Court serves, among other things, as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to the pursuit of high-quality, ethical lawyering.

The general membership of the Inn is made up of judges, professors, law firm partners, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other lawyers with varying levels of practice experience. The Inn meets on the Seattle University campus the second Tuesday night of each of the nine months of the academic year for drinks, dinner, networking, and a CLE presentation.  Students are each assigned to one of seven sub-groups, called pupilages, where students work with the judges and lawyers in those groups to develop and help lead the monthly CLEs.

Applications require a resume and a letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students and applications will be reviewed by Professor Deborah Ahrens and Erin Fullner, Associate Director of the Center for Professional Development.

Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter. The membership dues for 2016-2017 are $100, which will cover the cost of all the meals.

Applications for the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court are due Monday, April 18 by 5 p.m. Application materials can be submitted to Jessica Fuqua through email at fuquaj@seattleu.edu or in person in the Dean’s Offices in Sullivan Hall on the 2nd Floor.

The William L. Dwyer Inn of Court is part of the American Inns of Court, a national organization which is comprised of around 320 chapters and over 23,000 members.

Questions can be directed to Professor Deborah Ahrens, Erin Fullner, or Jessica Fuqua.

Representatives are expected to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with their school/college Dean’s office, faculty, and graduate student organizations. They will attend monthly GSC “All-Council” meetings and GSC events; attend retreats, in-service workshops, and council development activities; serve as liaison between the GSC and a specific graduate student population; serve and actively participate on GSC Committees, as needed; and represent the council to student, University administration, faculty, and other constituencies. These positions require a time commitment of approximately 5 hours per month and periodic availability during business hours.

The KCBA Alternative Dispute Resolution Section presents a special event, co-sponsored by the WSBA ADR Section:

Escalating Cost of Civil Litigation Task Force:
Recommendations Regarding Alternative Dispute Resolution

In April 2011 the Washington State Bar Association Board of Governors chartered a Task Force on the Escalating Costs of Civil Litigation to:  1) Assess the current cost of civil litigation in Washington State Courts and make recommendations on controlling those costs; and 2) survey neighboring and similarly situated states to compare the cost of litigation in Washington.

In celebration of ABA Mediation Week (Oct. 11-17), join us for a panel discussion with members of the ECCL Task Force to learn about their upcoming report and the recommendations regarding the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution to reduce the escalating cost of litigation.

•         If adopted, how the recommendations will be implemented

1L Resume Workshops Begin October 15

A successful job search begins with a strong resume, so be sure to sign up in TWEN for a 1L resume workshop. Legal resumes are different from other resumes, so even if you love your current version, it's time to revamp it.

Each workshop will be led by a CPD counselor and will consist of a small group of students. Time slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  If none of the available times fit with your schedule, please email Junsen Ohno so we can find an alternative.

You can register on TWEN beginning Tuesday, October 13 at 9:00 am. If you're already registered for TWEN, you should immediately be directed to the workshop sign-up page.  If you'e not immediately directed to the sign-up page, select “Add a Course” and find “1L Resume/Cover Letter Workshop” among the list of courses available for Fall 2015. CPD has emailed all 1Ls with sign-up information and a materials packet. Use the materials provided in the packet to complete your first resume draft and bring it, along with your laptop or tablet, to the workshop.
