Stokes Lawrence Diversity Scholarships

Stokes Lawrence is pleased to offer three $1,500 tuition scholarships to first-year students from diverse backgrounds; one at each of the three law schools in the State of Washington. The goal is to promote opportunities within the profession and to encourage a dialogue around the issue of diversity in the work place.

Criteria: The Diversity Scholarships are open to all first-year law students of diverse backgrounds who have demonstrated promise for a successful career in law and are committed to community involvement.

Application: Applicants will submit a current resume and a personal essay of no more than 1,000 words with the following content:

• Description of his or her thoughts on diversity and/or how diversity has played a role so far in his or her life
• Description of his or her community involvement

Materials must be submitted to the Dean Deming (dcdeming@seattleu.edu) no later than April 22, 2016. Please direct questions to diversity@stokeslaw.com.

Scholarship recipients will be announced by April 29, 2016.

Peace Corps Volunteers work in collaboration with community members in more than 70 developing countries worldwide in areas such as education, youth and community development, agriculture, health and HIV/AIDS, business development, the environment, and information technology.

If a lawyer has top notch legal skills, a comfortable office, a stellar case management system, but no one knows about the lawyer or her firm, does she have a viable law practice?  Building a successful law practice requires developing a brand, building and implementing marketing strategies, which includes identifying your market, honing your elevator speech, networking, and participating in the community you serve.  Join us for a hands-on training with Madhu Singh who will share best practices of building a successful practice through a variety of marketing strategies. You will leave with a marketing plan in hand with ideas to get you going right away. 

Madhu Singh is the Chief Legal Office of the Foundry Law Group. Since starting her solo practice, MK Singh Law, in 2009, Madhu has worked to pioneer a nontraditional approach to legal support that emphasizes efficiency, agility and hands-on collaboration. Call for Authors: American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in its 2016 Warren E. Burger Prize. Authors should submit an original, unpublished, 10,000–20,000 word essay on a topic that addresses the issues of excellence in legal skills, civility, ethics, and professionalism. The winning essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review and the author will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The submission deadline for the 2016 Warren E. Burger Prize is July 1, 2016. Inn of Court Student Membership Applications

Current 2Ls are encouraged to apply for 2016-2017 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. The Inn of Court serves, among other things, as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to the pursuit of high-quality, ethical lawyering.

The general membership of the Inn is made up of judges, professors, law firm partners, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other lawyers with varying levels of practice experience. The Inn meets on the Seattle University campus the second Tuesday night of each of the nine months of the academic year for drinks, dinner, networking, and a CLE presentation.  Students are each assigned to one of seven sub-groups, called pupilages, where students work with the judges and lawyers in those groups to develop and help lead the monthly CLEs.

Applications require a resume and a letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students and applications will be reviewed by Professor Deborah Ahrens and Erin Fullner, Associate Director of the Center for Professional Development. 

Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter. The membership dues for 2016-2017 are $100, which will cover the cost of all the meals.

Applications for the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court are due Monday, April 18 by 5 p.m. Application materials can be submitted to Jessica Fuqua through email at fuquaj@seattleu.edu or in person in the Dean’s Offices in Sullivan Hall on the 2^nd Floor.

The William L. Dwyer Inn of Court is part of the American Inns of Court, a national organization which is comprised of around 320 chapters and over 23,000 members.

2016 Washington Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (WACC) Diversity Scholarship

The Washington Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (WACC) is proud to sponsor three diversity scholarships totaling $9,000 (up to $3,000 per scholarship). One student from each of the three Washington State law schools will be eligible to receive a scholarship.

The Association of Corporate Counsel is a global bar association that promotes the common professional and business interests of in-house counsel who work for corporations, associations, and other private-sector organizations. The WACC connects local members and provides valuable resources through information, education, networking opportunities, and advocacy initiatives. With approximately 600 members statewide, the WACC Board of Directors is comprised of committees focused on the particular interests of its members, including pro bono work, CLEs geared towards in-house issues, fostering relationships with the law schools, and promoting diversity efforts via this scholarship.

The WACC Diversity Scholarship provides financial assistance to law students who promote diversity in the legal profession in Washington State. The scholarship provides incentives to increase diversity in the legal profession; reflects the diverse communities in which we live; and ultimately benefits the community at-large.

To be a scholarship recipient you must be a student who (i) is currently enrolled in one of the Washington State law schools, (ii) is a student in good academic standing, (iii) has a demonstrated financial need, and (iv) exhibits a commitment to increasing diversity in the legal profession or community at-large.

Racial Justice Leadership Institute

The Access to Justice Institute, Dean’s Office, and Student Bar Association invite you to apply for the Racial Justice Leadership Institute (RJLI).  

RJLI is a professional development opportunity that is being offered to SU law students in line with our commitment to the University mission.  RJLI is designed to foster leadership skills for working in all areas of the profession in ways that resist systems of privilege and oppression.  Participants can expect to gain:

• Common tools and language for addressing discomfort, tension, confusion, and other dynamics that emerge in classrooms and workplaces
• Strategies for identifying, naming, and responding to difficult situations related to identity, privilege, and oppression
• Deeper connections with peers, including a sense of solidarity and trust with other RJLI participants
• Shared analysis about the structural and interpersonal operations of racial privilege and oppression
• Skills for cultivating personal wellness as a strategy for personal and professional sustainability

This program is comprised of one day-long session and two follow-up evening sessions this spring semester.  The sessions will take place on the Seattle University campus.  The RJLI session dates are:

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) serves more than 230 state agencies, boards, commissions, colleges and universities, as well as the Legislature and the Governor. The mission of the Office is to deliver the highest quality professional legal services to officials, agencies and citizens of the state of Washington. The Office is comprised of over 500 attorneys and 600 professional staff.

Assistant Attorneys General from many of the AGO’s divisions will be in attendance to speak about opportunities that exist within their divisions and the AGO. Information about the Office’s volunteer law clerk recruitment program for first and second year law students will also be available.

KCBA Young Lawyers Division December CLE and Happy Hour
