Radha has over 17 years of experience working in international development. She joined World Justice Project (WJP) in 2012 as its first Director of Programs. She currently leads the incubation of locally-led pilot programs supported by seed grants and oversees a portfolio of 80+ programs on five continents. Prior to joining WJP, Radha worked for Landesa as its Director of Global Communications for several years. She also has worked as the Director of Special Projects at the Constitutional Rights Foundation in Chicago and the Associate Director of the SKS Foundation, the largest micro-credit organization in India, providing micro-loans to rural women to increase their economic development. She holds an M.A. in International Development Studies / M.Sci. in Public Service Administration from DePaul University, a B.A. in South Asian Studies from Antioch College, and a post-grad certificate in Cross-Sector Partnerships from the University of Cambridge in the U.K.

Michele Frix

Chief of Staff, Seattle Foundation

Michele serves as Chief of Staff for Seattle Foundation. Most recently, she worked with Seattle Foundation’s key partner on global philanthropy, Seattle International Foundation (SIF). During her seven years with SIF, Michele launched new initiatives, managed global teams and worked across a variety of stakeholders to build successful programs. Michele worked with SIF’s CEO and Board to lead their grantmaking strategy, including oversight of over $17 million in grants to more than 180 nonprofits organizations in 68 countries, including $10 million in grants to Central America.

In 2006, Rebecca founded MED25 International while receiving her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Seattle University. Since graduating from nursing school in 2007, Rebecca has worked as a registered nurse at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Over the years, she has transitioned to a full-time Executive Director position with MED25. Rebecca has a certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of Washington and most recently graduated from Seattle University with her Executive MBA.

CLE Scholarship

Free Scholarship Passes: Personal Injury Law Seminar

Sterling Education Services is dedicated to furthering education development by offering seminars on the changing economic, legal and cultural environment that professionals must operate today.  Sterling Education is offering 5 free scholarship passes for their upcoming seminar, “Personal Injury Law: From Start to Finish.” The scholarship passes include a day-long overview of a particular aspect of law, a seminar manual, and an opportunity to network with practicing attorneys.

The seminar will be held on July 14th from 8:30 to 4:30 at the Hotel Deca in Seattle.  Only current law students may take advantage of these passes and MUST provide their student id number or other proof of enrollment in order to register.  All students must be pre-registered; no walk-ins will be allowed.

Air Force JAG Fall Externship

The Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps is seeking applications for their 2016 fall unpaid internship/externship program at participating Air Force installations across the country. The Air Force JAG Corps provides full-spectrum legal advice to military commanders. As an intern or extern, you will gain hands-on experience in diverse areas of legal practice while learning more about the Air Force and the JAG Corps. The program is an excellent way to gain exposure to substantive legal work while serving alongside active duty Air Force Judge Advocates. Positions are available for full-time or part-time work for 16 weeks during the 2016 fall semester.

Interns/externs work under attorney supervision in numerous practice areas of the JAG Corps including:

• Preparing criminal and civil cases by conducting legal research, writing briefs and opinions, conducting investigations and interviewing witnesses
• Assisting attorneys who counsel and represent Airmen, their family members and retirees in personal legal matters in areas such as family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant law, tax, bankruptcy, immigration and naturalization law, and military administrative law
• Supporting attorneys in other areas, such as federal tort claims, government procurement law, employment law, international law, environmental law and operational law

Interns/externs must be able to work part-time (16+hrs) or full-time for up to 40 hours a week for 16 weeks and must pay for their travel to and from the job location and be able to secure housing. No housing allowance will be provided.

Washington Women Lawyers Invites You to a Film Screening of "Her Day in Court"

Washington Women Lawyers (WWL) has partnered with the Girl Scouts of Western Washington for a screening and discussion of the film, Her Day In Court. Her Day In Court is a documentary that includes interviews with women lawyers and judges on some of the issues they faced breaking into a male dominated profession and how the profession has changed, and continues to change.

This event will be an opportunity to not only honor women in the law, but to meet middle and high school girls who are exploring their future professional paths and are eager to meet women lawyers in their community.

Starbucks Law & Corporate Affairs 2016-17 Diversity Mentorship Program

The Starbucks Law & Corporate Affairs Department is now accepting applications for its 2016-17 diversity mentorship program. 

This program will connect Starbucks in-house lawyers with private practice junior attorneys from diverse backgrounds in one-to-one mentorship relationships.  Starbucks' legal department boasts one of the most experienced and diverse groups of attorneys in the region, and its lawyers are eager to share their insights into learning the practice of law, succeeding in law firm and other private practice environments, and for those who are interested, pursuing in-house career opportunities.  

Following a kick-off reception in July for incoming mentees and past participants, this program will foster direct, informal interactions over a one-year period to help diverse junior attorneys learn their craft and network in the local community of legal professionals and business leaders.  The program is open to all lawyers in private practice in their first six years as an attorney, who are members of one or more minority bar associations or diversity affinity groups.

Stokes Lawrence Diversity Scholarships

Stokes Lawrence is pleased to offer three $1,500 tuition scholarships to first-year students from diverse backgrounds; one at each of the three law schools in the State of Washington. The goal is to promote opportunities within the profession and to encourage a dialogue around the issue of diversity in the work place.

Criteria: The Diversity Scholarships are open to all first-year law students of diverse backgrounds who have demonstrated promise for a successful career in law and are committed to community involvement.

Application: Applicants will submit a current resume and a personal essay of no more than 1,000 words with the following content:

• Description of his or her thoughts on diversity and/or how diversity has played a role so far in his or her life
• Description of his or her community involvement

Materials must be submitted to the Dean Deming (dcdeming@seattleu.edu) no later than April 22, 2016. Please direct questions to diversity@stokeslaw.com.

Scholarship recipients will be announced by April 29, 2016.

She is particularly interested in the emerging intersections of technology, new media and business law and enjoys helping companies navigate the front lines of these fast-developing areas. Madhu is Adjunct Faculty Lead at the Community Development and Entrepreneurship Clinic at Seattle University School of Business and School of Law and on the Board of Director of the Women’s Business Exchange. She received the SBA 2014 Women business owner of the year award, been named a rising star each of the last three years by Superlawyers, and awarded "Superb business attorney" by Avvo.com. Seeking to make a positive impact in our community, Madhu also spends her time speaking at CLEs for attorneys, advising at micro-enterprise clinics, providing pro bono services for nonprofits, serving on nonprofit boards and hosting free seminars for local businesses. 

The 2016 CLE Connections Series, which is open to law students and attorneys, aims to offer high quality CLEs designed to help you run a successful law practice and opportunities to connect with other lawyer-entrepreneurs, especially those serving the moderate income client community.

Call for Authors: American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize

The American Inns of Court invites judges, lawyers, professors, students, scholars, and other authors to participate in its 2016 Warren E. Burger Prize. Authors should submit an original, unpublished, 10,000–20,000 word essay on a topic that addresses the issues of excellence in legal skills, civility, ethics, and professionalism. The winning essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review and the author will receive a cash prize of $5,000. The submission deadline for the 2016 Warren E. Burger Prize is July 1, 2016. Inn of Court Student Membership Applications

Current 2Ls are encouraged to apply for 2016-2017 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court. The Inn of Court serves, among other things, as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to the pursuit of high-quality, ethical lawyering.

The general membership of the Inn is made up of judges, professors, law firm partners, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other lawyers with varying levels of practice experience. The Inn meets on the Seattle University campus the second Tuesday night of each of the nine months of the academic year for drinks, dinner, networking, and a CLE presentation.  Students are each assigned to one of seven sub-groups, called pupilages, where students work with the judges and lawyers in those groups to develop and help lead the monthly CLEs.

Applications require a resume and a letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students and applications will be reviewed by Professor Deborah Ahrens and Erin Fullner, Associate Director of the Center for Professional Development. 

Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter. The membership dues for 2016-2017 are $100, which will cover the cost of all the meals.

Applications for the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court are due Monday, April 18 by 5 p.m. Application materials can be submitted to Jessica Fuqua through email at fuquaj@seattleu.edu or in person in the Dean’s Offices in Sullivan Hall on the 2^nd Floor.

The William L. Dwyer Inn of Court is part of the American Inns of Court, a national organization which is comprised of around 320 chapters and over 23,000 members.
