2014 LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT SUMMER CLERKSHIP COMPETITIONS

2014 LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT SUMMER CLERKSHIP COMPETITIONS

SPONSORED BY

THE WASHINGTON STATE BAR ASSOCIATION AND
THE KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

TWO SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS - $6,000.00 each

DEADLINE:  FRIDAY, APRIL 4, @ 12:00 NOON

Below is information about two summer clerkship opportunities for non-graduating students (including 1L students).

The two scholarships are sponsored by the Labor and Employment Sections of the WSBA and the KCBA, respectively.  The clerkship awards fund summer employment with a public interest component in the labor and employment law field.  You can find the detailed application Guidelines on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.  If you are interested, review the guidelines and prepare now by contacting the potential placement organization where you would like to gain experience and interviewing to determine if it is willing to host you for summer employment if you win one of the two summer clerkship competitions.  The best news is that when the potential employers understand that the student’s salary is paid for, they are thrilled and often jump at the chance to have a fully-funded summer employee, providing you with the incredible opportunity to gain experience in the field!

Interested students should:

1.    Read the Guidelines posted on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.

2.    Decide on the qualifying agency that you would like to work for.  (The Guidelines include a list of qualifying agencies.  If an organization of your choice does not appear on the list, however, inquire with Professor Natasha Martin or Professor Charlotte Garden to determine whether the agency meets the requirements for acceptable placements set forth in the Guidelines.

3.    Interview with your chosen agency and verify that, if you win one of the awards, it will allow you to work there fully funded this summer. Then submit your application by 12:00 NOON on FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2014. (Candidates submit only one application which is considered for both awards by the selection committee.)

For further information, see the LELA TWEN site or contact the Labor and Employment Law Faculty Members, Advisor Professor Natasha Martin (nmartin@seattleu.edu) as well as  Professor Charlotte Garden (gardenc@seattleu.edu).

Peggy Browning Fund 2014 Summer Fellowships

Applications are now being accepted for the Peggy Browning Fund's 2014 Summer Fellowship. These positions are open to 1L and 2L students, with a deadline of January 17th.

Please see Job #4729 on Symplicity.

About the Program:

Our core program is the Summer Fellowship Program, which is comprised of a 10-week fellowship during the summer months at labor-related organizations around the country.  In 2014, we will support between 60 and 70 funded summer fellowships, plus one part-time funded School-Year Fellowship at the Chicago Newspaper Guild for 2014 - 2015.

The Summer Fellowship Program provides stipends to 1st and 2nd year law students who dedicate this time to advancing the cause of workers' rights.  We routinely collaborate with 130 participating law schools and selected mentor organizations nationwide.

Summer Fellowship stipends will be a minimum of $5,000 per student for the ten-week employment period.  In many cases, mentor organizations will supplement the stipend. (See each fellowships description for details)

We recruit interested students and work closely with our mentor organizations to ensure that each fellow will experience unique and challenging work assignments.   Our strong relationships with leading national labor leaders, labor attorneys and labor law professors make our fellowship program the preeminent of its kind.
Peggy Browning Fellows gain the practical skills required to represent workers.  They enjoy opportunities to network with their peers and leaders in the field of public interest labor law.  The mentor organizations and their clients benefit from the services provided by this talented and commited group.

Since our beginning in 1997, we have placed over 500 law students in highly competitive fellowship positions with unions, worker centers, the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Labor Relations Board, the Federal Labor Relations Authority and union-side law firms.  Peggy Browning Fellows have advocated for thousands of workers and their families nationwide.  More than 120 Peggy Browning Alumni are currently working in workers' rights labor law or public interest law.

Puget Sound Area Minority Fellowship

The Puget Sound Area Minority Fellowship Program (PSAMFP) is designed to provide summer associate opportunities to minority first-year law students from the University of Washington and Seattle University Schools of Law. Students who are chosen to participate as Fellows in this highly competitive program will be placed as first-year summer associates with one of the program’s participating employers. The program is based on the National Minority Clerkship Program, which was designed and endorsed by the American Bar Association Commission on Opportunities for Minorities in the Profession. The PSAMFP was founded by representatives from interested law firms, the Loren Miller and Hispanic Bar Associations, and the two local law schools. It has been endorsed by the Asian, Hispanic, Northwest Indian, and Seattle-King County Bar Associations, and by the University of Washington and Seattle University Law School Alumni Associations. In 1997, the PSAMFP (previously the Puget Sound Area Minority Clerkship Program/PSAMCP) received the WSBA’s Affirmative Action Award, “in recognition of the Program’s contributions in creating and advancing career opportunities for minorities in the legal profession.” The program was renamed in 2010 to better reflect its similarities with other private law firm fellowship programs.

The program’s pilot year was 1991, and the summer of 2014 will mark the PSAMFP’s twenty-fourth year.

Reasons for the Program:
  • The program was started in response to various surveys, including a National Law Journal survey, showing that the level of minority lawyer involvement as associates and partners in major Seattle law firms had not increased significantly over the previous decade.
  • The PSAMFP is designed to identify students whose background, academic and otherwise, tends to predict successful career performance, and to provide those students with the opportunity to work in a major law firm or corporate law department environment.
  • Students who have the opportunity to work in a law firm or in-house legal department following their first year will gain a better appreciation of the legal profession and practice. These Fellowships offer first-year law students experiences that will assist them with their second-year studies, and in their pursuit of opportunities for employment for the following summer.

Program details, timeline and application instructions can be found on Symplicity. Check out job #4603

The application deadline is NOON on January 22nd.

Goldmark Internship

Applications are now being accepted for the Goldmark Internship program.

GOLDMARK INTERNSHIP HISTORY

The program is named for Charles A. Goldmark, the Foundation’s second president at his untimely death in January 1986. Chuck was a firm believer in, and a forceful advocate for, equal access to the justice system. The internship was created as a tribute to Chuck and to encourage young lawyers to emulate his ardent commitment. The Goldmark Equal Justice Internship is made possible by a matching grant from the Goldmark Family Foundation.

“Chuck believed that it is the responsibility of each of us, in our own way, to try to improve some aspect of our society beyond ourselves. To leave our society just a little bit better than we found it when we arrived here. He believed that, as a lawyer, he could accomplish this. Chuck practiced what he believed.”
Kevin Kelly, Foundation President 1997

Why OCI is Worth Your Time

OCI is quickly approaching. The first deadline is just around the corner, and before you know it, the interviews themselves will be upon us.

A question we are often asked at this time of year is "Should I participate in OCI?" If you are AT ALL interested in any of the firms on the schedule, or the type of work that they do, the answer is a resounding "yes." While you may have heard that OCI is only for the top 10% of the class and you shouldn't even bother if you didn't pull top tier grades last semester, that is not entirely accurate. Yes, it is true that OCI is a very competitive process and some of the employers who participate rely very heavily on grades when making their interview decisions. But not all of them.

Some employers base their decision almost entirely on grades. Others look for students with specific backgrounds. Still others are interested in well-rounded students that have a range of experiences to offer. The criteria can vary a great deal. Additionally, we have had students with borderline grades write outstanding cover letters that really struck the hiring manager and they were invited to interview. Other students have found themselves running into former interviewers at networking events were able to strike up a conversation and solidify a connection. Sometimes, a foot in the door is all it takes.

The point is, there is absolutely no reason to deny yourself the opportunity to interview. You could surprise even yourself and have a fantastic experience, culminating in a job offer. And if you apply and you are not selected, this isn't the only chance you will have this year to secure a summer position (at all). You're only out a couple of hours of your time, and even then, you got some good practice writing and fine-tuning your application materials, so you are that much more ahead the next time you apply for a position. Not bad.

The point is, by not giving yourself the opportunity, you are only hurting yourself. Yes, it is extremely cheesy, but it is also very true. So again, if you are at all interested in any of the employers, give it a shot. And if you are still on the fence about it, make an appointment to come in and speak to one of the CPD staff members. We are always happy to help.
