Federal Communications Bar Association Foundation Summer Internship Stipend & Scholarship Programs

The FCBA Foundation is accepting applications for its Law School Summer Internship Stipend Program and its Law School Scholarship Program.

The FCBA Foundation Law School Summer Internship Stipend

For the 29th consecutive year, the Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation will award stipends to outstanding law students employed as unpaid summer interns, through the FCBA Foundation’s Law School Summer Internship Stipend Program.

The FCBA Foundation is actively looking to help students from around the country who want to dedicate their time and talent over the summer to government service in areas that relate to communications law, including broadcasting, cable, information technology, television, telephony, satellite, and wireless.  It also can include work at agencies and Congressional committees addressing other communications-related areas, including internet law and policy, privacy, cybersecurity, copyright, emerging technologies, and related policy and legal issues.

How much are the stipends?  The program provides stipends of up to $5,000.  The Foundation considers funding from other sources in making award decisions and generally will adjust its stipend awards so that a recipient’s total funding for the internship will not exceed $7,000.

Where can recipients work?  Over the years, stipends have been used by students to support work in diverse federal, state and local government agencies with a connection to the communications industry.  Examples of agencies where recipients can work include the FCC, FTC, NTIA, DOJ, DHS, NIST, and others.  Students can also work in Congress and in relevant parts of state and local government.

Where does the money come from?  The Law School Summer Internship Stipend Program awards stipends from its FCC Chairman Robert Emmet Lee Scholarship and Internship Fund, and last year provided support to 12 outstanding law students. FCBA individual and corporate members donate money to the FCBA Foundation to support these stipends.

Are there limitations on use of the funds?  Stipend recipients may be selected before they have finalized their summer plans, so the FCBA Foundation requires recipients to confirm in writing that they accept an unpaid internship at an eligible agency or government office.  Minimum requirements for internship duration and time commitment also apply.

How to apply:  The application for the stipend will be available online from Wednesday February 23, until Monday, April 4, 2022.  Application deadlines.

Questions:  If you have any questions about the Foundation Law School Summer Internship Stipend program or application, please contact JaneenWynn.

The FCBA Foundation Law School Scholarship

The FCBA Foundation Law School Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to rising second or third year students currently enrolled in accredited law schools in the United States who have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in communications law.  The scholarships range from $2,000 – $10,000 each, and will be payable to the applicable law school in one lump sum to help cover the student’s tuition and other education-related expenses in the 2022-2023 academic year, and will be determined by a number of factors, including financial need and merit.

Scholarship application. The deadline for submission of applications is Wednesday, April 6, 2022.  The Foundation plans to notify successful applicants regarding their scholarship awards by mid-May.

If you have any questions about the Foundation Law School Scholarship program or application, please contact Janeen Wynn.

US DOJ Cyber Fellowship

The U.S. Department of Justice just added a new Cyber Fellowship to the Attorney General’s Honors Program (HP) this year. The three-year Cyber Fellowship will provide selected attorneys the opportunity to handle emerging national security and criminal cyber threats, while rotating through multiple Department components that protect the nation from cyber threats including the Criminal Division, the National Security Division, and the U.S. Attorneys Offices.

Through this unique opportunity, Fellows will handle a broad range of the cyber cases handled by the Department to provide them with a comprehensive understanding of the Departments response to emerging and critical threats. Fellows can expect to investigate and prosecute state-sponsored cyber threats; transnational criminal groups; infrastructure and ransomware attacks; and the use of cryptocurrency and money laundering to finance and profit from cyber-based crimes.

Incoming Fellows must agree to a three-year commitment to the program and be able to secure a Top Secret security clearance.  All Fellows will be based in the Washington, D.C. area.  Fellows may be extended or converted to permanent without further competition or reapply to the Honors Program in a subsequent year provided they meet eligibility criteria.  Alternatively, as they approach the end of their three-year term, Fellows may apply to permanent positions within the Department that align with their interest.

HOW TO APPLY: The Cyber Fellowship has been added to the online Honors Program application "Components of Interest" screen as an informal participant to permit interested applicants who have not yet submitted their application to apply. Honors Program applicants who wish to apply but already submitted an application, should simply follow these steps.

• Log back in to their online account and, in the "Action" column, select the red "Withdraw" button.

• The system will ask them to confirm that they want to withdraw their application.

• Once they confirm, they can go back in to their application to make any changes necessary by clicking the "Continue Application" button in the upper right portion of the browser screen.  Be sure to select “save and continue” to retain changes.

• They MUST re-certify and re-submit their application prior to the application deadline - go through the same Certify & Submit process they did when first submitting their application.

• If they have questions relating to modifying their application or experience technical difficulty, click the "Live Chat" button to the right side of the browser.

As a reminder, the deadline for law students and eligible graduates to submit their applications is Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at 11:59 PM ET.

Job Talk Tuesday: Jump In, The Water's Fine

"I might as well just jump in with both feet."

Erin Fullner, Director of Professional Development & Alumni Relations at SU Law

Sometimes the deep end is exactly where you need to be, so don't be afraid to jump in. "You don't know what you don't know" – be flexible, be bold, be open.

For this last Job Talk Tuesday of the season, CPD's own Erin Fullner focuses on flexibility, providing a reminder that your first job is about growth, and the best opportunities for growth sometimes show up in unexpected places.

You never know what each opportunity could bring, so it doesn't make sense to rule out possibilities before you've earnestly explored them, especially early in your career. Talk to Erin or one of the other advisors in the Center for Professional Development for guidance and encouragement.

Job Talk Tuesday: Step Up Your Game

"Step your game up - whether that's constantly improving your skills, constantly networking, or constantly looking for and doing things that will separate you from the competition."

David Tran, SU Law Class of 2015

David Tran, associate attorney at Helsell Fetterman, talks about his previous judicial clerkship and the value of looking at your early jobs in the law as an opportunity to develop skills. You don't have to know what area you want to practice in right off the bat; using your first job (or two) to build a varied skill set and explore options can help you find the right path for you.

"Be intentionally flexible," as David says. Most folks don't land right into their ideal job, so be open to things you may not have considered before - they can move you closer to your goals.

Watch and Listen to David's Job Talk

If you would like a transcript of the interview, please contact Erin Fullner
