Business Cards
CPD strongly recommends that law students purchase business cards. They are easy to carry and ensure that others will be able to contact you easily. You never know what will turn into a networking opportunity! You may order your cards from the Seattle University Reprographics Office in the basement of the Student Center Pavilion (just across Bellarmine Circle from the law school). That office knows how to format law student business cards.

EJW Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that in 2009 provided 373 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,000 education award voucher for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization. 10 SU students received this last summer! As a 2010 Summer Corps member, you will:
• Have access to Equal Justice Works’ network of alumni, experience and expertise as the nation’s largest provider of public interest opportunities for law students and attorneys;

2010 Small Firm Fair
There is no better way to start connecting with employers and building relationships in the community. Last year, over 40 firms and over 150 students attended. Students have secured jobs, found mentors, learned about specific fields of law, and connected with members of the bar in a relaxed setting through this event. 2010 Hong Duc Clerkship
The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington announces the 2010 Hung Duc Clerkship. The clerkship provides a law student with the opportunity to clerk at an international law firm in Vietnam for summer 2010. The Clerkship Recipient has the unique opportunity to learn about the local cultures and customs firsthand while living in Vietnam and to learn about international and comparative law by working at a major law firm.

Representing Limited English Proficient Clients and How to Work with an Interpreter
No matter what area of law you are considering, it is likely that at some point during your career you will find yourself working with an interpreter. Due to popular demand, the SU Law Clinic and ATJI are collaborating again to present this training opportunity for all law students to learn the critically important skills required to adequately represent limited English proficient (LEP) clients.

QLaw Summer Grant Applications now available!

The QLaw Foundation Summer Grant Program funds innovative public interest projects that benefit the GLBT community and/or people living with HIV/AIDS. Past grantees include Melissa Nystrom (GLBT Community Center), Sarah White (Northwest Women’s Law Center), Ashland Johnson (Lambda Legal), and Adrien Leavitt (QLaw Foundation Legal Clinic).
Projects and Organizations. Students are encouraged to create their own projects and connect with sponsoring organizations well in advance of the application deadline. The QLaw Foundation offers applicants a list of potential sponsors that have projects addressing issues relevant to LGBT rights or the rights of people with HIV/AIDS. These organizations are existing 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations or government agencies with staff attorneys who are qualified and available to supervise the student.
Volunteers. Meetings are typically on the first Monday or Tuesday of every month, either noon telephonic meetings or evening in person meetings. Contact summergrant@q-law.org for details.

2010 Leadership for Justice Fellowship
The Seattle University School of Law 's Leadership for Justice Fellowship provides a salary of $40,000 for one year to a recent Seattle University School of Law graduate to work with a host organization on a social justice law-related project that targets unmet equal justice needs of marginalized and underrepresented communities. The application deadline for the 2010 Leadership for Justice Fellowship has been extended to March 22, 2010. Applications will be accepted from Seattle University School of Law students who graduated in December 2009 or expect to graduate in May 2010. The Leadership for Justice Fellowship requires students to design a project in collaboration with a host organization.

Judicial Chambers Extern at the Court of Appeals
JUDICIAL CHAMBERS EXTERN AT THE COURT OF APPEALS! (1)
Judge J. Robin Hunt at the Court of Appeals, Division II, is seeking applicants now for full-time, one semester chambers judicial externship positions for Summer 2010 (beginning interviewing in December), Fall 2010, Spring 2011, and Summer 2011. A student participating in a full-time externship will receive 15 credits for fall or spring semesters and 8 credits for summer semester, equivalent to a full course load. Only third year students may participate in a full-time externship, thus current second year students are encouraged to apply (2).
As an extern for Judge Hunt you will have the opportunity to strengthen your research, writing, and analysis skills through a variety of projects covering a wide range of legal issues. Whether drafting prehearing memoranda and opinions, performing research for the judge, preparing dissenting opinions, or assisting in preparation for oral arguments, you will have fun meeting new people, learning the appellate process, and spending a semester putting your legal skills to use.
At Division II, externs are highly valued. You will be assigned challenging and thought-provoking projects that will deepen your understanding of the law and provide an invaluable learning experience. Judges and clerks alike will rely on you and include you in every facet of the appellate process. An externship at Division II will be a perfect complement to your law school experience and will enhance your probability of passing the bar exam upon graduation. Further, an externship is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to clerk after graduating (3).

Commercial Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York Seeks Clerks
The Commercial Division is the specialized business court of the New York State Supreme Court, the highest trial-level court in New York. Many of the most important commercial cases in the state are adjudicated in the Commercial Division. The Commercial Division is comprised of six justices who hear cases involving commercial contract disputes, commercial finance or commercial banking transactions, claims of commercial misrepresentation or unfair competition, matters arising out of commercial real property transactions, major insurance matters, and UCC cases. For those with a demonstrated interest in commercial law and who aspire to a career in commercial law, this clerkship will be an invaluable experience which will include drafting decisions and orders, working on discovery disputes, reviewing evidentiary issues at trial, and drafting jury instructions.

CAPAA and ACLF Launch Fellowship Program, Accepting Applications
The Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs (CAPAA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Community Leadership Foundation (ACLF) are pleased to announce the launch of a Fellowship opportunity for college juniors, seniors, and graduate students to build their legislative and public policy analysis skills on issues affecting the Asian Pacific American community. Applications are currently being accepted for the January 2010 Fellowship program. Individuals selected to participate in the program will gain valuable job experience and an inside look at the government while building leadership skills. Upon completing the Fellowship, the Fellow, if eligible, will participate in ACLF’s Community Leaders Program, which further develops leadership skills through community based curriculum, project team-building and mentoring/networking opportunities.
The 2010 Fellowship program begins in January, and application review begins December 1; priority given to applications received by December 15; after December 15th; applications are considered on a space-available basis. Fellows will be placed in the agency’s Olympia office.

AIDS Action (Washington, D.C.) is offering its Pedro Zamora Public Policy Fellowship for summer 2010 to graduate and undergraduate students and young professionals who seek experience in HIV related public policy and government affairs. Public Policy Analysis: Food Policy (Washington, D.C.)
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has an internship available for a law student who is interested in food policy. The Food Assistance department assists states in designing state food stamp programs for persons ineligible for the federal program and in implementing reforms to make the food stamp program easier to access and administer. The food stamp intern assists in researching, preparing, and distributing analyses and studies about federal or state policies to improve participation in food stamps and other low-income nutrition programs. The intern also analyzes food stamp law in order to help organizations represent their clients.
Requirements: Candidates should have an interest in nutrition policy, demonstrated statistical skills, and the ability to pay close attention to detail. SPSS/STATA experience is a plus. Also, the candidate should have a general interest in welfare reform/income support policy, as he/she will likely work in that department as well. Law students interested in food policy are strong encouraged to apply.

Third Way, a Washington, D.C., think tank, is offering a summer internship for law students with an interest in national politics. You must have strong analytical and research and writing skills. In addition to their day to day tasks, interns will gain hands-on experience working closely with Third Way’s senior management team, which has extensive political, communications, and policy experience, forged at every level of government and advocacy: the White House, federal agencies, the House and Senate, presidential campaigns, and national non-profit advocacy organizations. Interns will have the unique experience of participating directly in Third Way’s policy development. Georgetown University is Accepting Applications into their Global Health Law and Global Health Law and International Institutions Programs
Students in the Global Health Law Program spend one full-time year or up to three part-time years of study at Georgetown Law in Washington, D.C. They benefit from Georgetown’s unparalleled depth and breadth of course offerings in health law and related fields as well as an array of externship opportunities in the Washington area. Students may also choose to supplement their program of study with a certificate in International Human Rights, World Trade Organization Law, or National Security Law or complete a graduate independent research project under the guidance of a member of Georgetown’s distinguished faculty.
Students in the recently launched Global Health Law and International Institutions Program begin their course of study at Georgetown with either one full-time semester or up to three part-time semesters and then complete the program with a full-time spring semester at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. Daniel T. Murphy Student Writing Competition
The Richmond Journal of Global Law and Business is proud to announce the 2nd Annual Daniel T. Murphy Student Writing Competition.
The Daniel T. Murphy Student Writing Competition is open to any J.D. candidate student at an ABA accredited law school and is intended to foster knowledge and scholarly work by students on specific areas of the Law of the WTO. The competition is named for Professor Daniel T. Murphy who has been with the University of Richmond School of Law since 1976. As the cornerstone of international law at Richmond, the Richmond Journal of Global Law and Business chose to name this competition after him to honor the years of extraordinary work and dedication he has put forth to the students, the school, and our Journal.
The topic of this year’s competition is WTO Treatment of Developed and Developing Countries.
All entries must pertain to timely legal issues concerning developed and/or developing countries and the WTO.

Spend a Semester in Alaska
Trustees for Alaska is offering environmental law internships to interested law students who have a demonstrated commitment to the public interest and the environment. Second and third-year law students with coursework in administrative and environmental law are preferred. Trustees for Alaska provides a full spectrum of public interest law experience to its interns/externs, including research, writing, client contract, drafting legal documents, and public speaking on administrative law matters, depending on client and case needs.

2010 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest
Public Justice, P.C. announces the 2010 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest. The topic is "Can Coal Really Be Clean? Litigation remedies for Coal contamination from Mining to Combustion to Sequestration."
The winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a free 2010 Public Justice Foundation Membership. The winning essay will be featured on the Public Justice website and in the nationally disseminated Public Justice newsletter. It will also be published in the Vermont Law School online Journal of Environmental Law.
The Intent-To-Enter Submission deadline is January 29, 2010.
The Essay Submission deadline is March 31, 2010.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the DU-LIS program now offers one of the most comprehensive law librarianship courses of study in the country. Designed to combine general and subject specific competencies with experiential opportunities, the Law Librarianship specialization prepares students for work in a variety of legal information settings. Including 5 law specific courses, the specialization is designed to align with the American Association of Law Libraries’ Competencies of Law Librarianship and American Library Association’s Core Competencies of Librarianship . Students completing the 58 quarter-hour Master’s in Library and Information Science program earn an MLIS degree with a specialization in law librarianship.
Located in the heart of Denver, the LIS program is designed for the working professional. Classes are offered once a week, with sessions generally from 4:00 p.m. to 6:25 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:25 p.m. Students in the LIS program come from a variety of backgrounds and bring with them a host of professional and personal experiences.
The priority deadline for the 2010 academic year is December 1, 2009. Northwest Public Service Career Fair Information Now Available
The Northwest Public Service Career Fair website is now active!
If you are interested in government or public interest, you should plan to attend the 2010
Northwest Public Service Career Fair. CPD, along with ten other law school career services, will be hosting the Career Fairs in Seattle on Friday, February 5, 2010 and in Portland on Saturday, February 6, 2010.
Complete details about the Career Fairs and the employers that are participating are available
on-line. You may view the list of employers on the website prior to paying your registration fee. Please note that employers are added on a rolling basis, so it is criticial to check the employer list frequently for additions.
Student registration is now open. Registration fees are $15 for one location, or $25 for both
locations. Registration will remain open up to the Career Fair - however, remember if you are
submitting application materials for an employer, you must be registered and have paid your
registration fee prior to the deadline date, which is Monday, January 18, 2010.
Many of the participating employers are recruiting for law clerks and/or attorneys and will be
conducting interviews either at the Career Fair, or will schedule interviews for a later date at
their office. To be considered for an interview, you must register for the Career Fair, as well
as submit a cover letter and resume (for each employer you wish to apply to) by 11:59 pm
January 18th. If you choose to participate only in Table Talk, you may register up until the Career Fair. Complete details about the application process is available on the website.

CPD and ATJI host the Public Interest Log on Symplicity, and we'd love to see your dedication to pro bono work represented! We encourage you to utilize this tool to not only keep track of the great public interest work you have been doing, but also because we want to honor you for your volunteer work at the year-end Celebration of Social Justice event.
The public interest log is now available for all students to use on Symplicity. Students who enter their information via Symplicity will be recognized for their volunteer public interest hours in the categories of 20 hours, 60 hours, and 100 hours for the 2009 – 2010 academic year at the Celebration of Social Justice. Claire Anderson will speak about going blind late in life, the training she received at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Florida and getting her guide dog, DaVida, from Guide Dogs for the blind. She will share her experience in learning to live with her disability and moving forward to a happy and successful life.
