Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair

The Rocky Mountain Diversity Legal Career Fair provides an excellent forum for legal employers, law students and law school graduates to meet and discuss employment options with the goal of expanding opportunities and assisting the legal profession in fulfilling its commitment to diversity. Legal employers attending the RMDLCF seek to hire law students and graduates from diverse backgrounds that have been traditionally under-represented in the practice of law in the Rocky Mountain region. These include law students and graduates who are ethnic or racial minorities, disabled, and/or gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

Law students and recent law school graduates are invited to register and attend the RMDLCF and to apply for twenty-minute scheduled interviews with participating employers.

Bristow Fellowship

The U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Solicitor General is now accepting applications for the Bristow Fellowship. The Fellowship consists of a 12 to 14 month appointment beginning in August or September of 2011.

Bristow Fellows work closely with the other lawyers in the Office of the Solicitor General. They help draft briefs in the opposition to petitions for certiorari filed in the Supreme Court of the United States and prepare recommendations to the Solicitor General regarding the Authorization of government appeals in the lower courts. The fellows also assist in the preparation of petitions and briefs in Supreme Court cases, work on special projects, and help the Solicitor General and other lawyers in the office prepare for oral argument before the Supreme Court.

Job Shadow Program

There is an exciting opportunity this summer for those looking to connect with a practicing attorney in an area of law that interests them! The King County WA Women Lawyers (KCWWL) is launching a Job Shadow Program where law students are paired with an attorney for a half-day this summer to shadow the practitioner’s work. Students may tour a law office, observe the lawyer in practice or watch a court hearing, arbitration, deposition or trial. Students are encouraged to ask the volunteer attorneys questions about the law, practice and work/life balance.

WWL and non-WWL members in their 2L, 3L and 4L years with a serious interest are welcome to participate. New loan repayment program for attorneys in civil legal aid

A new loan repayment assistance program for civil legal aid attorneys is going to become available soon. The Civil Legal Assistance Attorney Student Loan Repayment Program (CLAAP) will repay a portion of eligible federal student loan debt for civil legal assistance attorneys who are employed full-time. The attorneys will need to remain employed for three years or pay the assistance back. An attorney may be awarded up to $6,000 in repayment assistance in 2010 (actually received in 2011), and may be prioritized to receive assistance in future years if Congress continues to fund the program. An attorney may receive a lifetime maximum of $40,000 in assistance. For more information, click here.

The Section of Taxation developed the Public Service Fellowship program in 2008 as a way to underscore the Section’s commitment to advancing public service efforts in tax law, while providing young lawyers an opportunity to either represent low income taxpayers or work on public policy issues affecting low income taxpayers.

• WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?
Pro Bono work has been an integral part of the Section’s activities for many years. The Section has actively encouraged member participation in various Pro Bono efforts, held numerous training sessions to that end, and devoted much of its resources to providing legal services to those in need.

• WHERE WILL YOU WORK?
The proposed employment must involve taxation or administration of tax law and must be with a public-interest, non-profit section 501(c)(3) organization (the “Sponsoring Organization”). NOVA Conference

The National Organization of Veterans' Advocates is holding their New Practitioner Session and Spring Conference in Seattle on April 22nd-24th.

2010 Labor & Employment Summer Clerkships & Scholarship Opportunities - DEADLINE EXTENDED

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 15, 2010 (by Noon)

Below is information about two Summer Clerkships for 1Ls, 2Ls, and non-graduating 3Ls, as well as, information regarding the Krug Scholarship for students who are not 1Ls.

These are summer jobs with a public interest component that around $5,000, funded in part by the WSBA Labor and Employment Section and the King County Bar Association. To apply, you need to start now by contacting the potential placement where you would work, and interviewing to see if they would be willing to host you to work there if you win the Competition. The deadline is noon on April 15, 2010. The best news is that when the potential employers understand the student’s salary is paid for, they are thrilled to have a “free” summer employee, so they usually jump at the chance to have you! See details below.

I. The LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT SUMMER CLERKSHIP COMPETITION (sponsored by the King County Bar Association) has generally awarded around $6,000 to a non-graduating student (1Ls are eligible) who has shown interest and distinction or promise in labor or employment law for certain summer employment.

The LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT SUMMER CLERKSHIP COMPETITION (sponsored by the Washington State Bar Association) awards a non-graduating student (1Ls are eligible) who has shown interest and distinction or promise in labor or employment law for certain summer employment. Interested students in either of the opportunities listed above should:

1. Read the Guidelines, posted on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.

2. Decide which qualifying agency you would like to work for. A list of qualifying agencies is in the Guidelines, and if you feel another would be your choice, but is not listed, ask Professor Martin if it meets the requirements for acceptable placements set forth in the Guidelines.

3. Interview at your chosen agency and ask if you win if they would allow you to work there (for free!) this summer. If so, submit your application by noon on April 15, 2010, per the Guidelines.

The cash grant is awarded to a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year student (including graduating students) who has shown interest and distinction or promise in Labor and Employment law. The deadline is in mid-to-late April each year. The recipient is also honored at the Pacific Coast L&E Conference, attended by some 400 practicing attorneys from the West Coast. How to Ace Public Interest Interviews

PSLawNet continues to offer great resources for law students and lawyers new to the profession via their blog. Their Interviewing Tips for Postgraduate Public Interest Jobs gives excellent advice for job seekers. Per PSLawNet, Harvard Law School’s Office of Public Interest Advising offers some terrific advice on interviewing on this web page, including suggestions about questions for you to ask interviewers. This is incredibly important. Most interviewers want to have a conversation, not to conduct an interrogation. And conversations, of course, are two-way streets. So you have to be prepared to engage.

International Law Info Session

Can an American lawyer pursue a legal career abroad? Yes, it's possible, but it's a difficult undertaking that presents many hurdles, limitations and frustrations that are best overcome with careful preparation and planning. First I'll speak about my own experience and outline the hurdles, limitations and frustrations I've encountered (e.g. language, immigration, local law practice regulations, work culture). Then I'll describe the preparation and planning one can do at the law school level to increase one's chances. In this regard, I'll list the top international practice areas that demand foreign lawyers (e.g. public and private international law, IP, offshore wealth planning and structuring, corporate tax and finance, and international commercial arbitration) and then discuss the qualifications one needs to successfully compete for clients or jobs in some of these practice areas by examining the bios of some American lawyers who have succeeded and some ads on foreign job boards. I'll wrap up the discussion with a question and answer period.

o Robert C. Bennett is an international lawyer admitted to the practice of law in Washington State, USA. He holds a Master of Laws, Law and Information Technology, Stockholm University, 1999-2001, a Juris Doctor, Seattle University, 1995-1998 and a Baccalaureate of Arts, Washington State University, 1990-1993.

o For the past ten years, he has practiced in the areas of international commercial, corporate and financial law in Switzerland, Sweden and the United States. Clerkship applications are typically completed a year in advance of the position's start date, so summer between second and third year of law school is the ideal time to begin applying. Quick note for 1Ls: judicial clerkships are not to be confused with judicial externships. Clerkships are full-time, typically 1-2 year positions for law school graduates. 1Ls interested in judicial employment, come talk to CPD about extern and internship opportunities available to students.

Position involves working on a documentary about 9/11. You do not need to have film experience, though any familiarity would be welcome. PREFERENCE IS FOR WEB AND WEBSITE EXPERIENCE, BUSINESS EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS IN THE BUSINESS AREA.

Requirements: Prefer IL students for a commitment fulltime summer, 2010 [you can take summer-school classes] with a commitment to work part-time through the following school year, fall, 2010-spring, 2011.

You should be in the top 30% of your class (roughly) and be curious, creative, and hard working. You will be working closely with Professor Berger and with other students. The work is exciting, interesting, and covers a range of skills from writing, research, negotiation, copyright permissions, distribution and sales, and so forth. Good telephone skills are required and the desire to learn!

On September 11th, three thousand and fifty-six lives turned into ash.
Stories of seven families provides an unprecedented window into the psychology of harm and justice – Eleven days after the terrorist attack, the federal government put in place the largest public entitlement program, The Victim Compensation Fund. It distributed 7 billion dollars to over 5,500 families. Was giving them money a misguided failure or a lifeline to survival -- an undocumented worker family describes how the Fund helped them cope; a widow of a bond trader explains why she spent her multi-million award on designer clothes and shoes; a widow of an insurance agent tells why she rejected the likely multi-million dollar award and filed litigation.
Did the Fund undermine our legal system, or did it offer 9-11 families justice by avoiding lawsuits?
Director Sarah Holt and co-producer, Marilyn Berger ask this and other hard questions of the families and Fund Special Master, Kenneth Feinberg, politicians, lawyers and psychologists. Given the threat of future attacks, should our government have a plan for compensating victims, and if so, is this Fund a model? Should the 9-11 Fund be re-established to compensate the victims of the toxic dust at Ground Zero? If the Victim Compensation Fund was the right thing to do, do those hurt in past tragedies like the Oklahoma City bombing also deserve compensation? Through relics salvaged from Ground Zero that look as if they’ve gone through a nuclear holocaust --burned emergency vehicles, steel beams bent like ribbons, charred files, personal items, and photos -- this visually powerful film captures– the shattered American dream and how we tried to use money to put it back together.

Laurel Rubin Rural Externship Advocacy Program

A Collaborative Project of the Access to Justice Law School Relations Committee
Autumn Semester/Quarter 2010

REAP is a collaborative externship program between:
*The Washington Alliance for Equal Justice and
*All three Washington law schools - University of Washington, Seattle University, and Gonzaga University.

The goal is to expand access to justice for migrant and seasonal farm workers, who are among the poorest and most vulnerable group of workers in the U.S. With approximately 289,000 farm workers and family members, Washington has the fourth largest population of migrant and seasonal farm workers in the country.

This externship honors Laurel Rubin, who was a young, talented legal aid lawyer and advocate for farm worker justice. Laurel died tragically on her way to meet with clients in Southeastern Washington. Laurel was passionately committed to advocating for farm worker justice and helping farm workers obtain some measure of fairness and respect. Despite working in a somewhat isolated and rural community, Laurel’s good will, intelligence, and tenacity quickly established her promise as a justice fighter and admired community asset. Her memory lives on in this statewide collaborative program through the training of law students advocating for farm worker justice.

Placement: The Access to Justice Law School Relations Committee, together with the Laurel Rubin Farm Worker Justice Project, is proud to announce the continuation of this unique externship program, which will place three bilingual (Spanish-speaking) law students in the Yakima Valley, with Northwest Justice Project, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and Columbia Legal Services. The students will work under the supervision of a team of experienced legal aid attorneys during the autumn academic term assisting farm workers on a wide variety of civil legal issues.

Structure. Students are eligible for their school’s maximum academic credits for the autumn term. All students will receive a housing stipend. The cohort will receive substantive training from private and legal aid practitioners on a wide array of legal subjects, along with academic seminars conducted by law school faculty. See reverse for more details. Students must have a high proficiency in Spanish to be considered for this externship. Professors from all three law schools, Gonzaga University, Seattle University and the University of Washington have successfully coordinated their faculty externship sponsorships. Students may be required to complete a contemporaneous externship seminar for academic credit as set out in their law school’s Externship Program guidelines for field supervisors, faculty, and students.

Student Selection: The cohort of three students will be selected from the Gonzaga University (GU), Seattle University (SU), and the University of Washington (UW) law schools. Students interested in applying for this externship should submit contact the Externship Office. The application deadline is April 10th.

The Marc Hershman Marine Policy Fellowship offers graduate students a first-hand experience in crafting marine and natural resource policies. Beginning October 2010, one to three qualified students will spend nine months working in Olympia with Washington State Ocean Caucus agencies.*

Graduate students who attend Washington universities and are enrolled in a marine-related field, including policy, law, social sciences, oceanography and fishery sciences, are encouraged to apply. 2010 Labor and Employment Summer Clerkship and Scholarship Opportunities

Below is information about two Summer Clerkships for 1Ls, 2Ls, and non-graduating 3Ls, as well as, information regarding the Krug Scholarship for students who are not 1Ls.

These are summer jobs with a public interest component that around $5,000, funded in part by the WSBA Labor and Employment Section and the King County Bar Association. To apply, you need to start now by contacting the potential placement where you would work, and interviewing to see if they would be willing to host you to work there if you win the Competition. The deadline is noon on Monday, April 5, 2010. The best news is that when the potential employers understand the student’s salary is paid for, they are thrilled to have a “free” summer employee, so they usually jump at the chance to have you! The cash grant is awarded to a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year student (including graduating students) who has shown interest and distinction or promise in Labor and Employment law. Patent Law Interview Program Deadline

The deadline to register for the Loyola Patent Law Interview Program is Monday, March 8th.

The event will be held on Thursday, July 29 and Friday, July 30 in Chicago, Illinois. This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs.

Remember - CPD will cover the $35 registration fee for each student interested in attending this event.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program. You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

Women of WSAJ Bar Preparation Scholarship

To support aspiring women plantiff's attorneys, WOW will provide women law school grads with scholarships to help defray the cost of bar review courses. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on financial need and demonstrated interest and intent to practice in the plaintiff's bar.

Preparing for the March 4th Small Firm Fair

Continue to check Symplicity as we add outstanding firms—Ahlers & Cressman, Saku Collins, Schulkin Rein, and other great additions will now be joining us.

On the day of the event please arrive in interview dress with resumes and business cards on hand. When you enter Campion Hall for the fair, check in at the student registration table to get a name tag before proceeding to the ballroom.

The purpose of this fair is to give you an opportunity to network with and gain knowledge from the 40+ firms and organizations in attendance. Do your due diligence and come prepared with strong questions for the attorneys.

BE PROACTIVE. Don’t limit yourselves to only those firms collecting resumes. This is an excellent chance to make connections for the future, be sure you talk with as many attorneys as possible.

WSAJ Diversity Bar Exam Preparation Scholarship

On behalf of the Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ), the WSAJ Diversity Committee is proud to announce that it is seeking applications for its inaugural Diversity Bar Exam Preparation Scholarship.

The amount and the number of scholarships will be determined by the WSAJ Diversity Committee and will vary in amount, up to the full tuition for the bar preparation course. Applicants must be a diverse individual, as defined within the attached application form, and must take the Washington State bar exam in July 2010 or February 2011.

All applicants will receive written notification from WSAJ of award or non-award by April 15, 2010.

Loyola Patent Law Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of law is hosting the 2010 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 29 and Friday, July 30 in Chicago, Illinois. Last year roughly 90 employers, 170 law schools, and 1,800 law students from across the country participated in the program. The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the resumes of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program. Last year, less than half of the participating students were selected for interviews, but many students were selected for multiple interviews.

Job postings will specify how to submit your application materials. Not all employers use Symplicity to review materials -- even if their job is posted on Symplicity. We have had good employers question why they have not received applications, only to find that students were uploading their materials onto Symplicity, but not following the posting's instructions to email documents to the employer. Click "Apply" in Symplicity to make sure your materials are actually emailed to the employer.
