The Legal Action Center presents, Advocating for Residential Tenants
Friday May 6th, 12:00 – 4:00pm

This CLE will educate participants on the basics of assisting low-income residential tenants in housing matters. The course is designed to prepare attorneys to provide pro-bono services to clients at the Legal Action Center, but all interested parties are encouraged to attend.

There is a suggested registration donation of $25 to attend that can be paid the day of the CLE via check or cash (no credit or debit cards). Mr. Chattin has been a member of the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) since 1992. He previously practiced in Alabama beginning in 1985 where he specialized in civil legal aid. Once he relocated to Washington, he has been actively dedicated to representing the state’s most vulnerable tenants in housing issues. He is also an adjunct professor at Seattle University School of Law and has previously taught at City University.

Frank Siderius
Siderius, Lonergan & Martin, LLP
Mr. Siderius joined Siderius Lonergan & Martin in 1977. He has been recognized as a Washington Super Lawyer by Washington Law & Politics magazine, and he is committed to providing pro bono legal services. He has been an advisor and litigator for nearly 30 years. In addition to an active practice advising credit unions and financial institutions, Frank has tried cases in state and federal courts at trial and appellate levels. He has handled cases involving business disputes, creditor’s rights, personal injury, wrongful death, real estate, insurance defense, and probate and estate issues. Additionally, he is also one of the co-founders of the Legal Action Center and actively volunteers his time at a variety of other organizations.

Gordon Thomas Honeywell
Mr. Green has been an active member of the WSBA since 1957. During his distinguished career, he has appeared before the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth, Tenth and Federal Circuits, the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington, and, the courts of the State of Washington. In addition, he has appeared before Federal and State courts in many states throughout the United States. Mr. Greenan has been listed in the Business Litigation Section of every edition of "The Best Lawyers in America" from 1987 to the present time. He was the 2009 recipient of the law medal awarded by Gonzaga University School of Law to those individuals who have provided exceptional service to the law and the legal system. He is also a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education seminars on subjects related to antitrust, commercial litigation, eminent domain, trial techniques, conflicts of interest and lawyer discipline. He has been a dedicated volunteer at the Legal Action Center.

44th Annual Pacific Coast Labor & Employment Law Conference

National Black Prosecutors Association Annual Conference and Job Fair

Registration is now open for the National Black Prosecutors Association's (NBPA) annual conference at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The goal of the National Black Prosecutors Association’s Job Fair is to promote diversity in prosecutors’ offices by providing a forum where law students, recent law graduates, and experienced attorneys from across the nation can meet and interview with prospective prosecutorial employers at the local, state, and federal levels.

The NBPA, established in 1983, is a professional member organization comprised of over 800 prosecutors. Our mission is to recruit, train, and advance the careers of minority attorneys as prosecutors at all levels of government. Our annual convention serves, not only as a job fair forum, but as a comprehensive legal training program for prosecutors. This year’s 28th annual conference will run from July 24, 2011 to July 30, 2011, and the Job Fair will take place on July 26, 2011.

William L. Dwyer Inn of Court Applications

Current 2Ls are encouraged to apply for 2011-2012 membership in the William L. Dwyer Inn of Court.

Resume and a letter of interest detailing why you would like to join the Inn are required. There are seven spots available for Seattle University law students and applications will be reviewed by Professor Deborah Ahrens and Erin Fullner.

Selection criteria include a demonstrated interest in litigation and dispute resolution, participation in activities supporting that interest, and a thoughtful and compelling cover letter. Applications are due Wednesday, April 27 by 4 p.m. Materials can be submitted to Lisa Van Wey in the Dean’s Office (Room 210) or electronically at vanweye@seattleu.edu.

The membership commitment consists of nine evening monthly meetings the second Tuesday of each month September-May. The membership dues for 2011-2012 are $100, which covers the cost of all meals.

Inn of Court serves as an educational and mentoring organization to law students who are dedicated to perpetuating high-quality, ethical lawyering. The general membership is made up of judges, attorneys with varying practice experience, and law students in their third year. The William L. Dwyer Inn of Court is part of the American Inns of Court, a national organization which is comprised of more than 300 chapters with 23,000+ members.

DRI's Law Student Diversity Scholarship

DRI is still accepting applications for our annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship, open to incoming second and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and Native American law students. Incoming second and third-year female law students are also eligible, regardless of race or ethnicity. Incoming second and third-year law students who also come from backgrounds that would add to the cause of diversity, regardless of race or gender are eligible to apply.

To qualify for this scholarship, candidate must be a full-time student or evening student who has completed two-thirds or more of the total credit hours requirement for a degree by the applicant's law school.

Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to applicants who best demonstrate:
• Academic excellence
• Service to the profession
• Service to the community
• Service to the cause of diversity

Marc Hershman Marine Policy Fellowship

This program places three to five graduate students or recent graduates for one year with state agencies in Olympia or Tacoma, Washington, working on ocean and coastal science and management issues. The Hershman Fellowship offers a first-hand experience in crafting marine and natural resource policies and enables fellows to share their academic expertise with state decision makers. 2011 host agencies are the state Department of Natural Resources, Department of Health, Military Department Emergency Management Division and the Puget Sound Partnership. Preliminary projects for this year include coastal hazards, conflicting uses of harbor areas, harmful algal blooms, marine spatial planning, planning and management of aquatic resources, and the science and management of Puget Sound cleanup and restoration efforts.

2011 WOW Bar Prep Scholarship

WOMEN OF WSAJ BAR PREPARATION SCHOLARSHIP
EXAM DATES JULY 2011 / FEBRUARY 2012

The Mission of the Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ) is to protect and promote a fair justice system and the right to trial by jury, and to ensure that any person who is harmed by the misconduct or negligence of others can obtain justice in America's courtrooms, even in actions against the most powerful interests.

In 1993 Women of WSTLA (WOW) section was established to encourage female members to participate in focused information exchange with female attorneys in the same legal specialty to further the mission of the WSAJ. The Women of WSAJ Section as it is now named is open to all members including law students and legal staff.

To support aspiring women plaintiff’s attorneys, WOW will provide women law school grads with scholarships to help defray the costs of bar review courses. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on financial need and demonstrated interest and intent to practice in the plaintiff’s bar.

Scholarship Criteria & Amount:
The amount and the number of scholarships will be determined by the WSAJ WOW Section Scholarship Committee and will vary in amount, up to the full tuition for the bar preparation course. Applicants must be female individuals and must take the Washington State bar exam in July 2011 or February 2012. All applicants will receive written notification from WSAJ of award or non-award by April 15, 2011.

Below is information about a Summer Clerkship opportunity for 1Ls, 2Ls, and non-graduating 3Ls.

This is a scholarship award for a summer job with a public interest component funded by the WSBA Labor and Employment Section. To apply, you need to start now by contacting the potential placement where you would work, and interviewing to see if they would be willing to host you to work there if you win the Competition. The best news is that when the potential employers understand the student’s salary is paid for, they are thrilled to have a “free” summer employee, so they usually jump at the chance to have you! See details below.

The LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT SUMMER CLERKSHIP COMPETITION (sponsored by the Washington State Bar Association) awards a non-graduating student (1Ls are eligible) who has shown interest and distinction or promise in labor or employment law for certain summer employment. The amount of the award varies and, in recent years, has been around $6,000.

Interested students should:

1. Read the Guidelines, posted on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.

2. Decide which qualifying agency you would like to work for. A list of qualifying agencies is in the Guidelines, and, if you feel another would be your choice, but is not listed, ask Professor Martin if it meets the requirements for acceptable placements set forth in the Guidelines.

3. Interview at your chosen agency, and verify with them that, if you win, they will allow you to work there (for free!) this summer. If so, submit your application by 12:00 noon on Monday, April 18, 2011, per the Guidelines.

The Mary Ellen Krug Award honors a student who has shown strong interest, promise, or distinction in labor and employment law. The grant, awarded by the King County Bar Association Labor and Employment Section is a variable amount generated in part by the proceeds from the annual Pacific Coast Labor and Employment Law Conference.* In addition to the cash grant, the winner is honored with recognition at the Conference luncheon, attended by some 350-400 labor and employment practitioners. The conference awards luncheon will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011. (You can still accept the award if you are unable to attend.)

Eligibility and Requirements:

1. Second, third, and fourth-year students are eligible to apply, including graduating students.

2. The student must have demonstrated interest and “promise or distinction in labor and employment law.” Interest, promise, and distinction might be evidenced by one or more of a wide range of activities, for example:

• Past paid or volunteer positions involving labor or employment law.
• Relevant courses studied at the law school or undergraduate level.
• Relevant personal background and personal experiences involving labor or employment law.
• Any other experiences and activities showing a dedication and commitment to the field of labor and employment law as a career.
• Personal qualities, such as good judgment and leadership potential, that will contribute to professionalism in the field.
• Contributions to labor and employment organizations, such as professional organizations or to the S.U. Labor and Employment Law Association (LELA).
• Grades are considered but are not the primary consideration for the award.

Application Process:

To apply, submit the following to Professor Martin’s Administrative Assistant, Nancy Harrop (4th floor) by 12:00 noon, Monday, April 18, 2011: Resume; Transcript; 1-2 page letter describing your interest, commitment, and any past involvement in the field, and your career goals; two (2) blind letters of recommendation (e.g., either (a) submitted by the candidate with his or her application materials in an envelope indicating that the letter was sealed by the recommender, or (b) mailed or e-mailed by the recommender to Professor Martin and received by the deadline. In the interest of confidentiality, recommendations should not reflect a “cc” to the candidate).

ABA Section of Litigation has launched a Law Student Good Works Competition on the Section’s Facebook page. The Competition asks law students to create the Section’s next Good Works project. It offers a Grand Prize of $10,000 seed money from the Section to implement the project, along with a $2,500 cash prize, a trip to Laguna Niguel and a year’s worth of mentorship by a Section leader and committee to be assigned to the project.

Clerkship Info Session

Students interested in pursuing judicial clerkships in 2012 need to attend the Clerkship Program Kickoff Meeting. This meeting is open to 2, 3, and 4L students. The application season for positions beginning in 2012 will be this summer and fall. Judicial clerks provide assistance to judges in researching issues before the court and in writing opinions. These positions are a great way to perfect research and writing skills and open up career opportunities for the future. Students in the top quarter of the class are strongly encouraged to consider clerking.

Landesa Center for Women's Land Rights Fellowship

The Landesa Center for Women’s Land Rights is an initiative of Landesa, an international non-profit organization that partners with developing country governments and non-governmental organizations to secure land rights for the world’s poorest people. For over 40 years, we have partnered with over 45 countries on legal reforms that have provided secure land rights to over 100 million families. Currently, Landesa is working in countries as diverse as China, India, Uganda, Rwanda, Liberia, and Burkina Faso.

At the Landesa Center for Women’s Land Rights we partner with governments, foundations, and local organizations around the world to research, improve legal frameworks, create tools, pilot innovative approaches, and develop a network of professionals focused on improving the conditions of women and girls by strengthening their access and control over land.

We seek to develop and support a network of professionals who work at national, local, and international levels to strengthen women’s land rights. We want to build the capacity of legal professionals strongly committed to strengthening women’s land rights in developing countries who can become the core of this network.

Hong Duc Clerkship Applications

The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington is now accepting applications for the 2011 Hong Duc Clerkship. VABAW recognizes that an international perspective will greatly enrich and broaden a law student’s legal education and experience. To that end, VABAW created the Hồng Đức Clerkship in 2007. The 2011 Hồng Đức Clerkship will provide a law student (“Clerkship Recipient”) with the opportunity to clerk at Hogan Lovells in Vietnam for a maximum of three summer months. This is a unique opportunity to live in Vietnam and to learn about international and comparative law by working at an international law firm.

South Asian Bar Association of NY Fellowship

The South Asian Bar Association of NY has fellowships available for law students looking to do public interest work this summer in NY and the greater metropolitan area.

To apply for the SABANY Public Interest Fellowship, you must be:

- A first or second-year law student of South Asian descent who will be spending at least ten weeks of the summer of 2011 in an unpaid public interest legal internship in New York State and the greater metropolitan area , or

- A first or second-year law student who will be spending at least ten weeks of the summer of 2011 in an unpaid legal internship in New York State and the greater metropolitan area which specifically focuses on the needs of the local South Asian community.

WA First Responder Will Clinic

The WA First Responder Will Clinic is a program where volunteer attorneys who are in estate planning/probate practice prepare estate planning documents at no charge for fire fighters, police officers and first responders.

A WA First Responder Will Clinic will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 for the Redmond Police Department which we would love you to participate in. The clinic will be located at 8701 - 160th Ave. N.E., Redmond, Washington 98052. This clinic will be an all-day clinic with 6 attorney/client meetings every hour, so everyone’s help would be greatly appreciated.

This clinic will be from 9am to 4pm on April 16, 2011. Please feel free to volunteer for either an AM shift (8:15am to 12:30pm) or a PM shift (12:15pm to 4:30pm) in the capacity of discussion leader, document drafter, intake personnel, witness or notary.

5th Annual Solo, Small & Mid-Sized Firm Fair Updates

The Small Firm Fair info on Symplicity now lists the more than 40 firms and organizations that will be participating in Thursday's Fair. Check out the list this weekend and begin your research!

We'll no doubt add additional firms and organizations next week, so check Symplicity for updates regularly. As we learn which firms are opting for resume collects we'll include that info on Symplicity as well, but be sure to be proactive: don’t limit yourself to only those firms collecting resumes. This is an excellent chance to make connections for the future, be sure you talk with attorneys from as MANY LAW FIRMS as possible.

The purpose of this Fair is to give you an opportunity to network with and gain knowledge from the 40+ firms and organizations in attendance. Do your due diligence and come prepared with strong questions for the attorneys.

On the day of the event please arrive in interview dress with resumes on hand. When you enter Campion Hall for the Fair, check in at the student registration table to get a nametag before proceeding to the ballroom.

Loyola University Patent Law Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of law is hosting the 2011 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 28 and Friday, July 29 in Chicago, Illinois. This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs.

Last year roughly 100 employers, 180 law schools, and 1,600 law students from across the country participated in the program. The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the resumes of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program. Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program. You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program is now open and will close on Monday, March 7. At this stage of registration, you will only need to enter some basic information (you will upload your resume and bid on interviews later in the semester).

Matthew Henson Environmental Law Fellowship

Thinking about a summer position in the environmental law or land use field?
Come pick up an application for the Matthew Henson Environmental Law Fellowship. Applications will be available on the court level Wednesday February 16 or Friday February 18. WSAJ Diversity Bar Preparation Scholarship

The Washington State Association for Justice (WSAJ) is committed to implementing strategies that will result in significant and measurable progress toward increasing diversity in the plaintiff's bar. To help achieve this endeavor, WSAJ has pledged scholarship monies to assist diverse individuals in covering the tuition cost of a bar preparation course. Diversity refers to individuals who self identify with those groups historically discriminated against and or those groups that are historically under-represented in the legal profession based on disability, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

U.S. Office of Government Ethics Honors Attorney Position

As part of its commitment to succession planning within the Executive Branch ethics community, The United States Office of Government Ethics is establishing an Honors Attorney position. This position, open to recent law school graduates from the classes of 2009 and 2010, is a three year term limited term appointment with promotion potential to GS-12. If you have not been admitted to the bar, you will initially be appointed as a law clerk. Once admitted, you will then become a Honors Attorney. OGE anticipates this position will allow an exceptional student an entry level position in the Executive Branch and prepare the individual for transition into the Federal legal and ethics community.

The attorney will work in three primary areas for a three year period: 1) as a member of OGE’s legislative team tracking legislation, writing advisories, and participating in meetings with stakeholders in the Executive and Legislative branches; 2) conducting legal research and writing and program management of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act of 1974; and, 3) the criminal conflicts of interest statutes and the Standards of Conduct by performing special projects assigned by the General Counsel and the presidentially appointed Director of the agency.

Equal Justice Works Summer Corps 2011

Equal Justice Works Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that in 2011 will provide 700 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,132 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization. The award application goes live on March 16, and applications are due by April 5. Last year seven SU students took home this educational award - you can too!

EPA region 10 Honors Attorney Fellowship

The EPA Region 10 Office of Regional Counsel in Seattle, Washington seeks applications for the Region 10 Honors Attorney Fellowship. Region 10 will be hiring two fellows for one-year Fellowships (may be extended to two years). Both Fellowships will begin in the Fall of 2011.

The deadline to apply for the 2011 Fellowships is February 28, 2011.

The EPA Region 10 Honors Attorney Fellowship is designed for a recent law school graduate with excellent academic credentials and strong interests in an environmental law career and public service. It provides an opportunity for entry-level attorneys to practice law in a leading governmental environmental organization, and to receive extensive training in and exposure to environmental law and policy work in the public sector. Region 10 offers new attorneys significant responsibility, the opportunity to handle a complex caseload that includes enforcement and counseling work, and extensive training and mentoring from experienced colleagues with recognized expertise. EPA offers a diverse and supportive work environment.

The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship

The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship, which includes one $5,000 grant for one student each year, is part of the Tisdale Fellowship program, a summer internship available to undergraduate and graduate students. Any student, undergraduate or graduate, who is interested in diversity and ethics issues, and in learning about high-tech public policy issues, can apply for this Fellowship.

The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship was created in memory of the late Thurmond Woodard, Dell’s former Vice President of Global Diversity and Chief Ethics, Privacy and Compliance Officer. Those interested should use the Eben Tisdale Fellowship Application, found at www.tisdalefellowship.org, and follow the instructions for submitting an additional essay on ethics and diversity. The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship grant recipient will participate in the same program as those in the Tisdale

The Summer 2011 Fellowship runs from June 13th – August 5th, 2011. The goal of the Fellowship is to create a supportive and collegial environment in which a new class of public policy professionals will be mentored to help ensure that the high-tech industry continues to have highly capable and well-trained individuals in both policy advocacy and senior management positions.

The Seattle University School of Law 2011 Social Justice Post-Graduate Fellowships

2011-2013 Justice in Action Fellowship
This two-year fellowship will provide $55,000 per year to a social justice legal host organization in Washington to cover salary, benefits and other costs associated with funding a full-time fellow.

2011-2012 Leadership for Justice Fellowship
This one-year fellowship will provide $55,000 for the year to a social justice legal host organization outside of Washington State - whether in the U.S. or internationally - to cover salary, benefits and other costs associated with funding a full-time fellow.

About the Fellowships:
Each fellowship will support the legal work of a law graduate (who will graduate in December 2010 or May 2011) at a host organization on an approved social justice project. Projects must be designed in collaboration with a host organization to offer effective advocacy with underserved or marginalized individuals or groups, or to address social justice issues that are not adequately addressed by some existing aspect of the legal system. The project should provide the fellow with the opportunity to exercise leadership and introduce new legal services or significantly expand upon services already provided by the organization. Finally, the project should be designed to include the potential for increased opportunities for Seattle University law students to engage in meaningful social justice work. The Fellow will work with the Access to Justice Institute to develop, offer and oversee student opportunities

The deadline for submitting a proposal for either the Leadership for Justice Fellowship (1-year outside of WA; national; international) or the Justice in Action Fellowship (2-year in WA) is Thursday, March 3, 2011.

Always Include a Cover Letter

Be sure to include a cover letter when you send an application/post your resume for a job on Symplicity. Include the letter even when the employers does not specify "cover letter" among the required application documents. They don't mention it primarily because they assume you will include a cover letter.

Cover letters tie together the various parts of your application and make the case for why the employer should hire you. Don't miss this opportunity to tell your story and demonstrate your writing skills.

FCBA Foundation Scholarships

For the 18th consecutive year, the Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation will award stipends to law students from its Chairman Robert E. Lee Scholarship and Internship Fund. In 2011, the Foundation will award several stipends to law students employed as unpaid summer interns in positions with the FCC and other government agencies or entities with a connection to the communications industry (i.e., broadcasting, cable television, telephony, satellite, wireless, and information technology).

In addition, the Foundation will select one outstanding intern among those chosen to receive an additional stipend for the summer—the “Max Paglin Award.” Mr. Paglin was the former General Counsel and Executive Director of the FCC, and the founder of the Golden Jubilee Commission on Telecommunications, which compiled a definitive legislative history of the Communications Act.

Requirements

Applicants will be selected on the basis of: (1) a demonstrated interest in the communications field, (2) having secured or having pending, an unpaid summer position (internship) for at least eight weeks in communications with a government agency or entities with a connection to the communications industry, (3) dependence on financial assistance in order to accept the unpaid internship in a government agency or entity involved in communications; and, (4) community activities. To the extent a recipient receives unanticipated funding for the unpaid internship, the FCBA Foundation’s general policy is to reduce its scholarship awards by any amount that a recipient’s total funding (including all sources) for the internship would otherwise exceed $7,000.

Applications Being Accepted for Mike Eidson Scholarship

The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women’ Trial Lawyers Caucus in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it. The Scholarship is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a trial lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.

The application deadline is May 31, 2011 and the Scholarship will be awarded at the AAJ Annual Convention, which will take place this year in July in New York City.

Interns will be exposed to structuring project financing, assessment of political risks, and evaluation of claims in connection with OPIC's insurance contracts.

OPIC is a small, independent governmental agency that encourages American business investment in developing nations.

Candidates should have an outstanding academic record; demonstrate interest in finance and international law and developing, including an academic or employment background in banking, finance and international affairs, and superior writing ability. Office of the US Trade Representative

The Office seeks 15-20 students, including 1Ls and 2Ls, for it sSummer Student Internship Program. In Summer 2010, 34 students were selected out ofo approximately 500 applicants; 12 were law students. Commit 6-8 weeks, from May to August. Dates are flexible; split summers are discouraged. Based on need, interns will be placed in one of the following DC offices: General Counsel; Congressional Affairs; Western Hemisphere; Europe and the Mediterranean; Japan; China; Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation; World Trade Organization and Multilateral Affairs; Industry; Agricultural Affairs; Public Affairs; Intergovernmental Affairs; Environment and National Resources; Services, Investment and Intellectual Property; as well as in the Geneva office.

International Trade Administration Summer Internship

The International Trade Administration of the Department of Commerce is accepting applications from 1Ls, 2Ls and 3Ls for volunteer summer interns in Washington, DC. Last year, the ITA hired 90 interns out of 400 applications. Interns conduct research and analyze regulatory, trade and investment issues; help prepare briefing papers, memos and other materials for senior officials; prepare responses to internal and external clients; and track deadlines and upcoming trade events.

The ITA works to strengthen the competitiveness of US industry (at home and abroad), promote trade and investment, and ensure fair trade through the enforcement of trade laws and agreements. It also helps improve the global business environment. Currently, the ITA is working on the President's economic recovery agenda and the National Export Initiative to sustain economic growth and support American jobs.

Must be a US citizen and have at least a 3.0 GPA; work well in a team environment; have strong oral and written communication skills; and be detailed oriented, able to multi-task and meet tight deadlines. International experience (education, travel and employment) and foreign language skills are a plus, but not required.

Moderate Means Program

Statewide Moderate Means Program Now Accepting Applications

The Statewide Moderate Means Program (MMP) is a joint venture between the Washington State Bar Association and the three Washington State law schools with Seattle University School of Law launching it this semester. The goal of the program is to increase access to civil legal services by people of moderate means who cannot afford an attorney but make too much money to qualify for traditional legal aid services. The program will focus on the areas of Family, Housing and Consumer law.

Law students serving as MMP volunteer interns will interview potential clients by telephone to collect information and evaluate their cases. Qualifying cases will be referred by the MMP interns to participating attorneys who have agreed to represent MMP clients for a reduced fee.

Benefits to students:

• Hands-on experience interviewing clients

• Training in substantive legal issues and issue-spotting

• Instruction on how to use the Legal Server database, which is used by most of the civil legal aid organizations in Washington State as well as the SU Law Clinics

• Supervision and mentoring by experienced attorneys

• Possible opportunities to work with MMP attorneys on cases they have referred (e.g., research)

• Satisfaction of helping moderate income individuals who otherwise might not receive any legal help at all

Korean American Bar Association of Washington 2011 Scholarship

The Korean American Bar Association of Washington (“KABA”) awards up to two (2) $1,000.00 scholarship to law student(s) attending a law school in Washington State. The scholarships are intended to recognize law student(s) who have demonstrated a significant commitment to community service, particularly service to the Korean/Korean American community. You need not be of Korean ethnicity to apply.

JUDGING CRITERIA
All applicants will be judged on the following criteria:
a. Community service and community involvement, particularly service to the Korean/Korean American community;
b. Academic achievement, work experience, activities, and post-law school goals; and
c. Essay.
There is no minimum G.P.A. requirement

SELECTION & NOTIFICATION
The scholarship recipient will be selected and notified by the KABA Scholarship Committee.
The award will be presented at the KABA Annual Banquet (Luncheon) on February 17, 2011.

Northwest Public Interest Job Fair

Registration is open for the 2011 Northwest Public Interest Career Fair!

If you are interested in government or public interest, you should plan to attend the 2011 Northwest Public Service Career Fair. CPD, along with ten other law school career services, will be hosting the Career Fairs in Seattle on Friday, February 4, 2011 and in Portland on Saturday, February 5, 2011.

Complete details about the Career Fairs and the employers that are participating are available on-line. You may view the list of employers on the website prior to paying your registration fee. Please note that employers are added on a rolling basis, so it is critical to check the employer list frequently for additions.

Student registration is now open. Registration fees are $15 for one location, or $25 for both locations. Registration will remain open up to the Career Fair - however, remember if you are submitting application materials for an employer, you must be registered and have paid your registration fee prior to the deadline date, which is Monday, January 17, 2011.

Many of the participating employers are recruiting for law clerks and/or attorneys and will be conducting interviews either at the Career Fair, or will schedule interviews for a later date at their office. To be considered for an interview, you must register for the Career Fair, as well as submit a cover letter and resume (for each employer you wish to apply to) by 11:59 pm January 17th. If you choose to participate only in Table Talk, you may register up until the Career Fair. Complete details about the application process is available on the website.

2011 Global Grants Program

This program supports new initiatives that will make an ongoing contribution to the global mission of Seattle University. The primary focus is on 1) developing models and programs for experiential international learning both locally and internationally and on 2) capacity-building for SU faculty to develop these skills in our students. Experiential international learning gives students hands-on, practical experience so that they develop the capabilities to understand and adapt to an international environment, such as service learning, applied projects, and internships. These grants are made possible by a generous donor. This program is coordinated by the Office of Global Engagement and the Global Advisory Team, a committee of representatives from each college and across the campus.

Awards granted in this period will be available for the spring and summer terms of 2011. A total of $50,000 is available. There is no fixed amount for each grant, though the cost and number of students impacted will be a criteria for decisions.

Applications are due by January 31st. A copy of the necessary application form (which includes additional program details) will be attached to the upcoming CPD newsletter. Questions about the program can be directed to Janet Dickson.

The Knauss Fellowship provides eligible graduate students a one-year work experience on the staff of the U.S. Congress or with a Federal agency dealing with marine issues. Similar in structure to the Knauss, the Hershman Fellowship offers graduate students a nine-month opportunity with Washington State Caucus agencies in Olympia. The two-year Coastal Management Fellowship matches postgraduate individuals with state coastal zone programs throughout the country. All three fellowships offer a first-hand look at how science is used in the policy arena and how decisions are made. The WSG Science Writing Fellowship enables undergraduate and graduate students to work with WSG Communications staff on developing materials that help individuals better understand and manage marine resources. The Sea Grant/NOAA Fisheries Fellowship offers two- and three-year research opportunities to Ph.D. candidates interested in population dynamics and stock assessment or marine resource economics.

Janet D. Steiger Fellowship

The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work in the consumer protection departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States. The eight-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General (“NAAG”), as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service.

The first and second year law students who have served as Steiger Fellows have characterized their experiences as truly rewarding, often well beyond their expectations. A number of students have said that for the first time they are considering law careers in public service, and several have already entered public service upon graduation.

Institute for a Democratic Society Program

The Institute for a Democratic Society is accepting applications for their upcoming Fellowship program.

IDF is a 6 month fellowship from January through June, occurring over 11 intensive weekends. During these weekends the program focuses on a diverse range of political topics, the nuts and bolts of campaigns and elections, the geographic issues around the state, and developing leadership skills within our community. Fellows meet with elected officials, leading experts, business owners, lobbyists, nonprofit leaders, and people making a difference in their communities all over the state and in Washington D.C. We want our fellows to get engaged in the political process while introducing them to the people and issues that are affecting our state. Each year IDF graduates a "farm team" of progressive leaders who go out into the world and make a difference within campaigns, policy, non profits and their communities.

IDF offers training to exceptional women and men ages 21 to 36.The topics focus on three major areas:

* Public policy and emerging issues
* The legislative and political process
* Campaigns and elections

Fellows travel across Washington State and topics cover the breadth of policy issues including agriculture, homelessness, transportation, education, energy, and the environment. Our days in Washington, DC and Olympia have included meeting elected officials, lobbyists and dignitaries. Campaign training includes development of a campaign plan, effective messaging and communications, volunteer recruitment and managing a budget.

Deadlines

Applications for the Class of 2011 will be accepted starting on July 1, 2010 and must be postmarked or submitted online by November 19, 2010.

If you cannot apply by November 19th, a 'late registration grace period' will be extended through Monday, November 22; however, the application fee then increases to $40 per registrant.

Asian Pacific Islander Community Leadership Foundation Fellowship

The State of Washington Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs (CAPAA) and the Asian Pacific Islander Community Leadership Foundation (ACLF) invites Washington’s future leaders to apply to their Fellowship program in the CAPAA office. CAPAA is an Executive Branch agency which serves to advise the Governor, the Legislature, and state and local agencies on issues of concern to the Asian Pacific American community. ACLF is a community-based, nonprofit organization that trains and supports the leadership of Asian Pacific Islanders with a commitment to social justice, community empowerment and public service. This program allows students to make a significant contribution to our state while earning academic credit, exploring career options, and gaining valuable professional experience.

2011 Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest

THE HOGAN/SMOGER ACCESS TO JUSTICE ESSAY CONTEST offers law students an opportunity to receive reward and recognition for expounding on whether and how the courts can be used to obtain justice.

For 40 years, the competition was known as the Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest, providing law students an opportunity to investigate and offer solutions to the multitude of injustices inflicted on the environment. The contest was established in 1970 by the late Roscoe B. Hogan of Birmingham, Alabama, a prominent environmental lawyer. With additional support from noted attorney Gerson Smoger, the contest was renamed and expanded beginning with the 2011 competition.

The topic for the 2011 contest is "The Gulf Oil Spill: Who Are the Victims and How Do They Get Compensated?"

Any student currently enrolled in an accredited American law school may submit a legal essay for the competition.

The author of the winning essay will receive a $5,000 cash prize; recognition in the Public Justice newsletter and on the website; publication of the essay in the Vermont Law School’s online Journal of Environmental Law; and a free Public Justice Foundation membership for the Contest Year.

Any student currently enrolled in an accredited American law school may enroll in the contest. Each entry must be submitted through a faculty adviser. All entrants must submit an INTENT TO ENTER FORM by January 31, 2011. The deadline for the essay is March 31, 2011. A panel of nationally renowned trial lawyers and law professors will judge the entries.
